Pitch Discrimination Testing in Patients with a Voice Disorder.

Auditory perception plays an important role in voice control. Pitch discrimination (PD) is a key index of auditory perception and is influenced by a variety of factors. Little is known about the potential effects of voice disorders on PD and whether PD testing can differentiate people with and without a voice disorder. We thus evaluated PD in a voice-disordered group (n = 71) and a non-voice-disordered control group (n = 80). The voice disorders included muscle tension dysphonia and neurological voice disorders and all participants underwent PD testing as part of a comprehensive voice assessme

Does having a voice disorder hurt credibility?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to determine whether listeners were less likely to believe a statement that is produced in an atypical voice, as compared to a typical voice. It was hypothesized that an atypical voice, characterized by abnormal roughness, strain, and pitch, would elicit increased skepticism. This hypothesis was based on previous evidence that there are negative stereotypes against individuals who have a voice disorder, and that increased difficulty processing an utterance can lead to disbelief. METHODS: In Experiment 1, 36 listeners rated obscure trivia statements (suc

Videokymographic Visualization of Phonasthenia: A Nonorganic Voice Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Phonasthenia is a voice disorder where the larynx looks essentially normal and dysphonia is not heard but felt by the patient. This study aims to use videokymography (VKG) to detect any abnormalities in the vibratory pattern in phonasthenia and to find out whether or not these abnormalities change after vocal loading. METHODS: Thirty-seven phonasthenic patients and 31 normal subjects participated in a detailed protocol, including analysis of subjective complaints and videokymographic quasi-objective parameters (baseline) followed by loading their voices through prolonged loud read

An interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of a hyperfunctional voice disorder.

The purpose of this article is to describe the treatment of a 45-year-old male with a hyperfunctional voice disorder by a biofeedback therapist and a speech-language pathologist. The interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of this voice disorder involved the combined use of traditional voice therapy techniques and EMG biofeedback procedures together with cognitive behavioral therapy. Voice therapy was facilitated through the use of a computer-based, speech-monitoring system. The remediation of this voice disorder was attributed to the collaborative efforts of two professionals representing

Differential diagnosis and treatment of psychogenic voice disorder.

Forty consecutive patients with psychogenic voice disorder were studied prospectively to shed light on some problems of differential diagnosis met by the otolaryngologist. The females (n = 35) were on average younger than males (n = 5) (mean age 34.5 vs 51.8 years, respectively). Although an upper respiratory tract infection preceding the voice disorder was reported by no more than 25% of the patients, as many as 40% had been treated with antibiotics on one or more occasions. Other treatment and voice rest had been prescribed to a further 20% of the patients. The frequency rate of reported ast

ROC Analysis Cut-off Points of Hellenic Voice Handicap Index for Neurogenic Voice Disorders Patients: an Exploratory Study.

OBJECTIVE: The inclusion of subjective methods for evaluating Voice Disorders is proven an essential factor for diagnosis as these methods include self-reported questionnaires (eg, Voice Handicap Index-VHI) for everyday clinical practice. In turn, by obtaining cut-off scores of self-perceived questionnaires intended for assessment procedures of different voice disorders (eg, patients with neurological problems), the clinicians might be helped toward finding their patients' needs leading to better monitoring, and treatment suggestions. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to estimate the

An Examination of Pre- and Posttreatment Acoustic Versus Auditory Perceptual Analyses of Voice Across Four Common Voice Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The objective, instrumental acoustic measure of Cepstral Spectral Index of Dysphonia (CSID) correlates with audio-perceptual measures, is sensitive in detecting voice abnormalities, and tracks change following treatment. The goals of the current study were to (1) test the agreement between CSID versus auditory perceptual measures of pre- versus posttreatment voice change, and (2) investigate whether change in scores is based on voice disorder or phonemic structure of sentence stimuli. METHODS: Forty patients with benign voice disorders produced sentences and a sustained /a/ vowel f

OBJECTIVES: The Iranian Voice Quality of Life Profile (IVQLP) is a recent culture-based developed tool for assessing the quality of life of dysphonic patients. The research questions addressed here are as follows: (1) Are the correlations between IVQLP scores and values of objective voice measures? (2) Do the correlations differ across the three different voice disorders? METHODS: The subjects were divided into three groups: muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) (n = 62), benign midmembranous vocal fold lesions (n = 56), and unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) (n = 32). The study sample consisted

Prevalence of vocal tract discomfort in patients with voice disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Up to 20% of the US population carries a penicillin allergy label; however, over 95% of those patients can safely tolerate penicillin. This discrepancy has important personal and public health consequences. There is no published curriculum for medical trainees that covers penicillin allergy history taking, risk assessment, and antibiotic prescribing. METHODS: We created a 60-minute, interactive curriculum that targeted medical students during their internal medicine rotation. We employed learning strategies including didactics, case-based learning, and role-playing. We compared

Evaluation of voice disorders in patients with active laryngeal tuberculosis.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal tuberculosis (LTB) is the most frequent larynx granulomatous disease. In general there is lung involvement, but in an important proportion of cases you can find LTB without pulmonary disease. The lesions observed in LTB, such as ulceration and fibrosis, can interfere in the process of voice production. The involvement of the mucous lining of the vocal folds can change their flexibility and, consequently, change voice quality, and the main symptom is dysphonia present in almost 90% of cases. OBJECTIVE: To describe the anatomical characteristics and voice quality in LTB
