From end-use characterization to decentralized reuse design: Closing the data-to-system gap.

Decentralized water reuse systems are increasingly deployed, yet their design standards and quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) frameworks rely on assumed exposure parameters rather than empirical data. Concurrently, smart metering research has generated high-resolution, fixture-level demand profiles that remain disconnected from reuse practice. This review asks whether empirical end-use data support the exposure parameters assumed in non-potable reuse risk models, bridging three siloed literatures: residential end-use characterization, decentralized reuse system design, and QMRA. A sodium alginate-polyaniline hydrogel evaporator with salt suppression ability and mechanical stability: Heterojunction construction and water treatment.

Interface evaporators are important in the production of clean water, but problems such as surface oil and soluble contamination remain. In this paper, the structure of an evaporator is optimized, and a superhydrophobic NH2-UIO-66/Bi2WO6 floating layer replaces the conventional fix layers. Under the action of the polyaniline hydrogel photothermal layer, the evaporation rate is 2.46 kg•m-2•h-1. A mechanism analysis demonstrates that the constructed NH2-UIO-66/Bi2WO6 is a Z-type heterojunction, and that •OH, •O2- and h+ play key roles in the degradation process. The band gap width of Bi2WO6 and

Advancing sustainable seawater disinfection: Enhanced inactivation and mechanism of pulsed UV-LEDs irradiation on Tetraselmis sp.

Ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs), as a novel ultraviolet light source with flexible pulse mode, has gained significant attention for applications in water disinfection and food sterilization. This study investigated the comparative inactivation efficiency of Tetraselmis sp. with continuous and pulsed UV-LEDs irradiation, exploring different wavelengths, duty rates and pulse frequencies. The results reveal a significant enhancement in inactivation efficiency (p < 0.05) under pulsed conditions even at the same UV dose, with inactivation efficiency increasing as duty rate or pulse freq

Removal of pharmaceutically active compounds from water sources using nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes: Comparison of removal efficiencies and in-depth analysis of rejection mechanisms.

Trace organic compounds from effluent streams are not completely removed by conventional purification techniques and hence, contaminating groundwater sources. Herein, we report the removal efficiency and rejection mechanisms of three common pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs); caffeine (CFN), omeprazole (OMZ), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), using commercial nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes with different surface characteristics. The RO membranes showed near-complete removal of all PhACs with rejection rates >99%. On the other hand, retention capabilities for the NF mem

Numerical solutions for the treatment brine by diffusive and migration flux using new brine-clay-seawater system.

With the growing world population and industrial production, the demand for water has been continuously increasing. By 2030, 60.0% of the world population will not have access to freshwater, which is ∼2.50% of the total global water. For this, a total of over 17,000 operational desalination plants have been constructed worldwide. However, the key barrier to desalination expansion is brine production, which is 50.0% higher than the freshwater, generating 5.0-33.0% of total desalination cost. In this paper, a new theoretical approach for brine treatments has been proposed. It consists in combini

Exploring the Limitations of Osmotically Assisted Reverse Osmosis: Membrane Fouling and the Limiting Flux.

Osmotically assisted reverse osmosis (OARO) has shown great potential for low-cost and energy-efficient brine management. However, its performance can be significantly limited by membrane fouling. Here, we performed for the first time a comprehensive study on OARO membrane fouling, explored the associated fouling mechanisms, and evaluated fouling reversibility via simple physical cleaning strategies. First, internal membrane fouling at the draw (permeate) side was shown to be insignificant. Flux behavior in short-term operation was correlated to both the evolution of fouling and the change of

Automation of membrane capacitive deionization process using reinforcement learning.

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an alternative desalination technology that uses electrochemical ion separation. Although several attempts have been made to maximize the energy efficiency and productivity of CDI with conventional control methods, it is difficult to optimize the CDI processes because of the complex correlation between the operational conditions and the composition of feed water. To address these challenges, we applied deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to automatically control the membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) process, which is one of the representative CDI processes,

Reclamation of wastewater organics via two-stage growth of bacteria-then-oleaginous phagotrophic algae.

A substantial amount of organic matter is wasted in current wastewater treatment processes. To reclaim the value of organic matter, a two-stage continuous-flow open process has been developed by utilizing the capability of phagotrophic algae in ingesting bacterial cells. In this process, wastewater is first pumped into a bacteria tank to grow bacterial cells, and then the effluent containing grown bacteria cells is fed to an algae tank to grow phagotrophic algae. The operation conditions such as dilution rate, pH, and dissolved oxygen level were comprehensively investigated and optimized with

Effect of membrane property and feed water organic matter quality on long-term performance of the gravity-driven membrane filtration process.

This study investigated the influence of membrane property and feed water organic matter quality on the permeate flux and water quality during gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration. GDM filtration was continuously carried out over 500 days at hydrostatic pressure of 65 mbar in dead-end mode without any back-flushing or membrane cleaning. Three ultrafiltration (UF) membranes (PES-100 kDa, PVDF-120 kDa, and PVDF-100 kDa) and one microfiltration (MF) membrane (PTFE-0.3 μm) were tested for treating lake water with varied organic matter qualities due to algal growth. The fluxes of the four membr

Copper deficiency can limit nitrification in biological rapid sand filters for drinking water production.

Incomplete nitrification in biological filters during drinking water treatment is problematic, as it compromises drinking water quality. Nitrification problems can be caused by a lack of nutrients for the nitrifying microorganisms. Since copper is an important element in one of the essential enzymes in nitrification, we investigated the effect of copper dosing on nitrification in different biological rapid sand filters treating groundwater. A lab-scale column assay with filter material from a water works demonstrated that addition of a trace metal mixture, including copper, increased ammonium

Effects of drinking water treatment residual amendment to biosolids on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances leachability.

Public concerns exist over whether land application of biosolids is a pathway of introducing large amounts of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) into terrestrial ecosystems. Ongoing research is investigating a variety of high organic matter (OM) and Al/Fe phases for use as amendments to reduce PFAS leaching from matrices including biosolids. Drinking water treatment residuals (DWTRs) have characteristics (e.g., high OM, oxalate-extractable Al (Alox), and/or oxalate-extractable Fe (FeOx) content) linked with PFAS retention and are widely available at low cost. We investigated sorp

Heterogeneous photocatalysis of moxifloxacin at a pilot solar compound parabolic collector: Elimination of the genotoxicity.

Photocatalysis has been applied for the elimination or reduction concentration of emerging pollutants in water. One of them, is the moxifloxacin (MOX), a fluoroquinolone that have a potential to develop resistant bacteria and have been present toxicity. The MOX achieves the environment due to inefficient wastewater treatment and incorrect disposal. Aiming to find a sustainable solution for photocatalytic process, compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) reactors have been proposed. In this sense, the present study investigates the application of CPC reactor for the degradation of MOX using sunlig

Investigating the Fe0/H2O systems using the methylene blue method: Validity, applications, and future directions.

An innovative approach to characterize the reactivity of metallic iron (Fe0) for aqueous contaminant removal has been in use for a decade: The methylene blue method (MB method). The approach considers the differential adsorptive affinity of methylene blue (MB) for sand and iron oxides. The MB method characterizes MB discoloration by sand as it is progressively coated by in-situ generated iron corrosion products (FeCPs) to deduce the extent of iron corrosion. The MB method is a semi-quantitative tool that has successfully clarified some contradicting reports on the Fe0/H2O system. Moreover, it

Formation and Fate of Carbonyls in Potable Water Reuse Systems.

Low molecular weight, uncharged compounds have been the subject of considerable study at advanced treatment plants employed for potable water reuse. However, previously identified compounds only account for a small fraction of the total dissolved organic carbon remaining after reverse osmosis treatment. Uncharged carbonyl compounds (e.g., aldehydes and ketones) formed during oxidation have rarely been monitored in potable water reuse systems. To determine the relative importance of these compounds to final product water quality, samples were collected from six potable water reuse facilities an

Effect of prescribed fires on the export of dissolved organic matter, precursors of disinfection by-products, and water treatability.

In this study, we report for the first time the effect of prescribed fires on the export of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and precursors of disinfectant by-products (DBPs) from periodically (every 2-3 years) and seasonally (i.e., dormant and growing) burned forest fuel materials (i.e., live vegetation, woody debris, and detritus [litter and duff]) and treatability of its rainwater leachate. Periodically applied (every 2-3 years for 40 years) prescribed fires decreased total fuel load (62±10%), primarily detrital mass (75±2%). However, functional groups (i.e., phenolic compounds, proteins, car

Organic Pollutants in Shale Gas Flowback and Produced Waters: Identification, Potential Ecological Impact, and Implications for Treatment Strategies.

Organic contaminants in shale gas flowback and produced water (FPW) are traditionally expressed as total organic carbon (TOC) or chemical oxygen demand (COD), though these parameters do not provide information on the toxicity and environmental fate of individual components. This review addresses identification of individual organic contaminants in FPW, and stresses the gaps in the knowledge on FPW composition that exist so far. Furthermore, the risk quotient approach was applied to predict the toxicity of the quantified organic compounds for fresh water organisms in recipient surface waters. T

Legionella pneumophila: From potable water to treated greywater; quantification and removal during treatment.

Greywater is an alternative water source that can help alleviate stress on depleted water resources. The main options for greywater reuse are toilet flushing and garden irrigation, both producing aerosols. For that reason transmission of inhalable pathogens like Legionella present a potential risk. To improve the understanding about Legionella in greywater, we traced the pathogen seasonally from the potable water system to the final steps of the greywater treatment in four houses in northern Israel. Physicochemical and microbiological parameters were analyzed in order to assess background grey
