Issues concerning the informality and outdoor sex work performed by travestis in São Paulo, Brazil.

The objective of this article was to discuss a series of issues pertaining to outdoor sex work practiced by low-income travestis in São Paulo, Brazil. Qualitative methods conducted among this segment of the population revealed sex work as almost inseparable from the existence of travestis as a social group. Among them, the outdoor modality was the most prominent and social stigma was a predisposing factor for their entrance (and permanence) in sex work. The results showed that some of the difficulties they faced regarding work must be understood as a consequence of them being self-employed, in

Poor performance on serial visual tasks in persons with reading disabilities: impaired working memory?

The present study investigates the performance of persons with reading disabilities (PRD) on a variety of sequential visual-comparison tasks that have different working-memory requirements. In addition, mediating relationships between the sequential comparison process and attention and memory skills were looked for. Our findings suggest that PRD perform worse than normally achieving readers (NAR) when the task requires more than a minimal amount of working memory, unrelated to presentation rate. We also demonstrate high correlations between performance on the task with the most working-memory

The beta-1 adrenergic antagonist, betaxolol, improves working memory performance in rats and monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that beta adrenergic receptor stimulation has no effect on the cognitive functioning of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Blockade of beta-1 and beta-2 receptors in the PFC with the mixed beta-1/beta-2 antagonist, propanolol, had no effect on spatial working memory performance. However, more selective blockade of beta-1 or beta-2 receptors might show efficacy if the two receptors have opposite effects on PFC function. The current study examined the effects of the selective beta-1 antagonist, betaxolol, on working memory in rats and monkeys. METHODS: In r

Working through the pain: a controlled study of the impact of persistent pain on performing a computer task.

OBJECTIVES: A large percentage of employees experience persistent pain while at work. This situation can become costly to employers with large amounts of lost production-time, absenteeism, and long-term disability. The link or transition between working through (ignoring) pain and disabling pain is unknown. This paper presents the results of a controlled study examining the impact of persistent pain on performance in a working population. Benefits of early detection are discussed. METHODS: This was a controlled, repeated measures study using 3 types of measures: questionnaires (pain, pain anx

The effects of sleep debt and monotonous work on sleepiness and performance during a 12-h dayshift.

The study examined the effects of the amount of preceding sleep and work pace on sleepiness and cognitive performance during a 12-h dayshift. Twelve process operators (aged 28-56 years) completed a study with four single 12-h dayshifts and preceding night sleep in the laboratory. A simulated distillation process served as a work task. The 12-h shifts differed from each other in terms of the amount of preceding night sleep (23:00-06:30 hours or 2:30-6:30 hours) and work pace (slow or fast). All shifts contained four work simulation sessions of 1.5 h, and each of them included a 15-min alarm ses

Evaluating immunocytochemistry performance in lung cancer cytology: An IASLC Cytology Working Group study.

BACKGROUND: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is essential for tumor subtyping and predictive biomarker analysis in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). When only cytological material is available and no concurrent biopsy or cell block exists, immunocytochemistry (ICC) may need to be performed on slides prepared using diverse fixation protocols, introducing substantial pre-analytical variability. METHODS: Seven laboratories representing commonly used cytology fixation protocols were selected based on an exploratory global survey of 63 institutions. Two central laboratories prepared direct smears,

Effects of rumination and distraction on working memory performance in individuals with depressive tendencies and trait anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Rumination prolongs depressive mood and impairs executive functioning including working memory and attentional control, even in healthy individuals. Distraction can potentially counteract these effects; however, many experimental paradigms have relied on neutral, self-unrelated content and have failed to reflect the self-focused nature of everyday rumination or the possible benefits of emotionally meaningful distractions. This study investigated the effects of rumination and positive and neutral distractions based on personally relevant content on working memory performance in heal

Executive functions in psychopathy: a meta-analysis of inhibition, planning, shifting, and working memory performance.

Much research has focused on executive function (EF) impairments in psychopathy, a severe personality disorder characterized by a lack of empathy, antisocial behavior, and a disregard for social norms and moral values. However, it is still unclear to what extent EF deficits are present across psychopathy factors and, more importantly, which EF domains are impaired. The current meta-analysis answers these questions by synthesizing the results of 50 studies involving 5,694 participants from 12 different countries. Using multilevel random-effects models, we pooled effect sizes (Cohen's d) for fiv

Atypical Brain Aging and Its Association With Working Memory Performance in Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) can present with altered brain structure and deficits in cognitive function similar to those seen in aging. However, the interaction between age-related brain changes and brain development in MDD remains understudied. In a cohort of adolescents and adults with and without MDD, we assessed brain aging differences and associations through a newly developed tool that quantifies normative neurodevelopmental trajectories. METHODS: A total of 304 participants with MDD and 236 control participants without depression were recruited and scanned

Polygenic susceptibility for multiple sclerosis is associated with working memory in low-performing young adults.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex disease with substantial heritability estimates. Besides typical clinical manifestations such as motor and sensory deficits, MS is characterized by structural and functional brain abnormalities, and by cognitive impairment such as decreased working memory (WM) performance. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the possible link between the polygenic risk for MS and WM performance in healthy adults (18-35 years). Additionally, we addressed the relationship between polygenic risk for MS and white matter fractional anisotropy (FA). METHODS: We generated a

Working Memory and Linguistic Performance of Dual Language Learners With and Without Developmental Language Disorders.

Purpose This research note describes the use of working memory measures as potential indicators of developmental language disorders (DLD) in preschool-age dual language learners from Spanish-speaking backgrounds. This report is an extension of early work, completed by the same authors that described the diagnostic accuracy of a Spanish nonword repetition task. Method One hundred thirty Spanish-speaking families with preschool-age children participated; 37 children had DLD, and 93 were typically developing. Families were recruited from early childhood programs in three states in the western reg

The effects of anticipating a high-stress task on sleep and performance during simulated on-call work.

On-call work is used to manage around the clock working requirements in a variety of industries. Often, tasks that must be performed while on-call are highly important, difficult and/or stressful by nature and, as such, may impact the level of anxiety that is experienced by on-call workers. Heightened anxiety is associated with poor sleep, which affects next-day cognitive performance. Twenty-four male participants (20-35 years old) spent an adaptation, a control and two counterbalanced on-call nights in a time-isolated sleep laboratory. On one of the on-call nights they were told that they wou

Dynamic shifts in brain network activation during supracapacity working memory task performance.

Despite significant advances in understanding how brain networks support working memory (WM) and cognitive control, relatively little is known about how these networks respond when cognitive capabilities are overtaxed. We used a fine-grained manipulation of memory load within a single trial to exceed WM capacity during functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate how these networks respond to support task performance when WM capacity is exceeded. Analyzing correct trials only, we observed a nonmonotonic (inverted-U) response to WM load throughout the classic WM network (including bilat

Prevalence and effects of mood disorders on work performance in a nationally representative sample of U.S. workers.

OBJECTIVE: Research on the workplace costs of mood disorders has focused largely on major depressive episodes. Bipolar disorder has been overlooked both because of the failure to distinguish between major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder and by the failure to evaluate the workplace costs of mania/hypomania. METHOD: The National Comorbidity Survey Replication assessed major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder with the World Health Organization (WHO) Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and work impairment with the WHO Health and Work Performance Questionnaire. Changes in neuronal activation in patients with bipolar disorder during performance of a working memory task.

OBJECTIVES: Several lines of evidence suggest that deficits in cognition persist in bipolar patients during periods of euthymia. Working memory impairment has been observed in euthymic bipolar patients and noted to be a significant source of functional deficits in psychiatric disorders. Functional changes associated with these cognitive deficits however, remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that patients with bipolar disorder would demonstrate changes in neuronal activation in specific regions forming part of the working memory network. METHODS: Fifteen euthymic bipolar patients and fift
