Shear bond strength of adhesive systems on PEEK, PEKK, and fiber-reinforced composites: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Strong and durable bonding between composite resins and high-performance polymers (HPPs) is difficult to achieve because of HPPs’ low surface energy and chemical inertness, which limit their clinical applicability. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) between a composite resin and HPPs using different adhesive systems. METHODS: Disc-shaped specimens of polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), and fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) (n = 50 per group) were fabricated and sandblasted with 50 μm aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) particles. Surface ro

Effect of surface treatments on the shear bond strength of PAEK polymers to composite resin: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Polyaryletherketone (PAEK) polymers, including polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), are increasingly used in prosthodontics because of their favorable mechanical and biological properties. However, their chemically inert and low-surface-energy characteristics result in insufficient bonding to veneering composite resins. Therefore, effective and clinically safe surface treatment protocols are required to enhance adhesion. METHODS: Square specimens were fabricated from three Computer Aided Design/ Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) PAEK polymers: unfille

Enhanced osteogenesis and antibacterial activity of dual-functional PEEK implants via biomimetic polydopamine modification with chondroitin sulfate and levofloxacin.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implants have emerged as a clinically favored alternative to titanium alloy implants for cranial bone substitutes due to their excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, the biological inertness of PEEK has hindered its clinical application. To address this issue, we developed a dual-functional surface modification method aimed at enhancing both osteogenesis and antibacterial activity, which was achieved through the sustained release of chondroitin sulfate (CS) and levofloxacin (LVFX) from a biomimetic polydopamine (PDA) coating on the PEEK surfa

Simvastatin and Moxifloxacin Co-Delivery via ZIF-8/PDA Coating on PEEK Implants: A Strategy for Combating Implant-Associated Infection and Enhancing Osseointegration.

BACKGROUND: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a promising orthopedic implant material due to its bone-matched elastic modulus and radiolucency. However, its clinical application is limited by biological inertness and lack of antibacterial activity, which predispose to implant-associated infection (IAI) and poor osseointegration. This study developed a multifunctional coating on sulfonated PEEK (SPEEK) via polydopamine (PDA)-mediated co-delivery of simvastatin-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles (SIM@ZIF-8) and moxifloxacin (MOX) to address these limitations. METHODS: A time-programmed release coating was

Reconstruction of cranioplasty using the thoracodorsal artery perforator (TDAP) flap: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Complex defects resulting in ablation of the scalp, the calvaria, the dura, and the underlying brain are still challenging. These defects require cranioplasty to restore the bone cosmetic and functional roles and free-flap soft tissue reconstruction to prevent cranioplasty exposure and further infection. Different materials have been used in cranioplasty, while different free flaps have been proposed in those cases. In this article, we present a case series of cranioplasty reconstruction with thoracodorsal artery perforator flap (TDAP). PATIENTS AND METHODS: From April 2016 to Jan
