BACKGROUND: Pathological gambling (PG) frequently co-occurs with anxiety disorders. However, the extent to which the co-occurrence is related to genetic or environmental factors across PG and anxiety disorders is not known.
METHOD: Data from the Vietnam Era Twin Registry (n=7869, male twins) were examined in bivariate models to estimate genetic and shared and unique environmental contributions to PG and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and PG and panic disorder (PD).
RESULTS: While both genetic and unique environmental factors contributed individually to PG, GAD, and PD, the best fitting m

Violent offenders have abnormalities in their glucose metabolism as indicated by decreased glucose uptake in their prefrontal cortex and a low blood glucose nadir in the glucose tolerance test. We tested the hypothesis that low non-oxidative glucose metabolism (NOG) predicts forthcoming violent offending among antisocial males. Glucose metabolism was measured using the insulin clamp method among 49 impulsive, violent, antisocial offenders during a forensic psychiatric examination. Those offenders who committed at least one new violent crime during the 8-year follow-up had a mean NOG of 1.4 sta

A community survey in 4,426 adults was undertaken as part of the World Mental Health Survey Initiative reporting the prevalence and risk factors for suicide-related outcomes in Colombia. Lifetime prevalence estimates of suicide ideation, plans, attempts, and risk factors for suicide-related outcomes were assessed. Retrospective reports of disorders age-of-onset were used to study associations between primary mental disorders and first onset of suicide-related outcomes. Risks of plans and attempts were highest with ideation early age-of-onset and within the first year. The highest risk for idea

Adolescents with decreased impulse control exhibit behavioral problems. Lifestyles are related to impulse control. However, the relations of sleep patterns and impulse control among adolescents are unknown. Thus we examined how sleep patterns were associated with impulse control among Japanese junior high school students. Surveys were completed by a nationwide sample of 1934 students. A significant association between decreased impulse control and bedtimes after midnight was revealed. Specific lifestyle factors related to bedtimes after midnight were older age, greater numbers of hours spent w

Dopaminergic medications could increase the occurrence of a set of dysregulated behaviours in Parkinson's disease (PD), including reward-seeking behaviours (pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, binge eating, reckless driving), punding and compulsive medication use. We report a preliminary evaluation of a questionnaire to assess the presence of these impulsive-compulsive behaviours associated to dopamine replacement therapy in PD. We screened 38 patients and their caregivers, comparing dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS) patients and non-DDS patients. The questionnaire

OBJECTIVE: A wide range exists in the frequency of adolescent self-cutting behavior; however, the implications of this variability are relatively unexplored. Although evidence suggesting a relationship between self-harm and sexual risk behaviors has been identified, little is known regarding the relationship between frequency of self-cutting and sexual risk. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that adolescents who repeatedly self-cut would report more HIV risk behaviors and riskier attitudes than those who had engaged in infrequent self-injury.
METHOD: Adolescents (11-18 years; mea

BACKGROUND: Compulsive shopping disorder is increasingly recognized as a treatable impulse-control disorder. We report the first long-term, naturalistic follow-up of patients with compulsive shopping disorder, which examined the course of illness over 1 year in a cohort that had completed up to 3 months of open-label treatment with citalopram, 20 mg/day to 60 mg/day. In that trial, 17 (71%) of 24 subjects who met McElroy and colleagues' diagnostic criteria for compulsive shopping disorder were responders (Clinical Global Impressions-Improvement scale rating of much or very much improved and Ya

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to measure the reliability, validity, and classification accuracy of the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for pathological gambling.
METHOD: Participants in this study were drawn from two sources: 803 men and women from the general adult population of Minnesota and 259 men and women who were admitted to a gambling treatment program. A 19-item measure of the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for pathological gambling was administered, along with other validity measures.
RESULTS: The DSM-IV diagnostic criteria were found to be reliable and valid. With a standard cut

OBJECTIVE: Repetitive skin picking that culminates in skin lesions and excoriations has a fairly common prevalence and causes clinically significant distress. Myriads of agents have been used to treat the condition with no convincing results.
METHODS: Ten patients (8 women and 2 men) with skin-picking disorder (per DSM-5 criteria) were enrolled in the study. The study was conducted from December 1, 2013, to December 29, 2014. The patients were treated with 12-week open-label topiramate in a titrating-upward dose (25-200 mg/d). Different measures to evaluate the efficacy of topiramate included

The neurobiological underpinnings of intermittent explosive disorder (IED) are traditionally linked to deficiencies in the serotonergic system. In this study, we investigated the effects of escitalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), on brain activation during face processing. We expected that escitalopram would reduce amygdala activity in IED and in addition, we explored the effect in other social-emotional-related brain regions. A total of 17 subjects with current IED and 14 healthy controls participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, counterbalanced fM

We examined the relationship between gambling severity, impulsivity and obsessionality/compulsivity in 38 pathological gamblers, representing the complete Minnesota sample of a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial of paroxetine for the treatment of pathological gambling (PG), using Pearson correlations and linear regression models at baseline and treatment endpoint. At baseline, Pathological Gambling Modification of the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (PG-YBOCS) scores correlated significantly with those of the Eysenck Impulsiveness Questionnaire (EIQ) Impulsiveness subscale and

This cross-sectional study used a random sample of 412 Emergency Department (ED) patients to test the following hypothesizes: 1) injury would be positively associated with problem drinking and recent drinking; 2) impulsivity and sensation seeking would be positively associated with injury, while risk perception would be negatively associated with injury. Results show recent drinking is associated with 2-fold increase in the odds of injury [OR and 95%; CI = 2.34 (1.07-5.10)] while problem drinking and personality factors were unrelated to injury. Other significant predictors were gender and age

PURPOSE: Previous studies in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and impulse control disorders (ICDs) have produced heterogeneous results regarding striatal dopamine transporter (DaT) binding and activity in the mesocorticolimbic network. Our aim here was to study the relationship between striatal DaT availability and cortical metabolism, as well as motor, behavioural and cognitive features of PD patients with ICD.
METHODS: In a group of PD patients with ICD (PD-ICD, n = 16) and 16 matched PD patients without ICD (PD-noICD, n = 16), DaT single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) im

Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) is a disorder of impulsive aggression affecting 4-7% of the U.S. population during some period of life. In addition to other biological correlates, elevations of plasma inflammatory markers have been reported in IED, compared with control, subjects. In this study we sought to explore if treatment exposure to anti-aggressive agents, compared with placebo, would be associated with a reduction in circulating levels of inflammatory markers. Thirty IED subjects, from a 12-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of fluoxetine and divalproex, in

As no comprehensive assessment instrument for impulse control disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) exists, the aim of this study was to design and assess the psychometric properties of a self-administered screening questionnaire for ICDs and other compulsive behaviors in PD. The Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease (QUIP) has 3 sections: Section 1 assesses four ICDs (involving gambling, sexual, buying, and eating behaviors), Section 2 other compulsive behaviors (punding, hobbyism, and walkabout), and Section 3 compulsive medication use. For validation

UNLABELLED: The number of students accumulating credit card debt--and the amount of debt itself--on college campuses is increasing. If high-risk credit and health behavior are associated, health behavior interventions might apply to high-risk credit behavior.
OBJECTIVE: The authors' purpose was to examine these possible associations.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: They used a retrospective design with existing data from a sample of 45,213 US college students and several ordinal regression models, which corresponded with high priority college health issues.
RESULTS: Students with high-risk credit

BACKGROUND: Previous studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have identified differential brain activity in healthy subjects performing gambling tasks and in pathological gambling (PG) subjects when exposed to motivational and emotional predecessors for gambling as well as during gambling or response inhibition tasks. The goal of the present study was to determine if PG subjects exhibit differential brain activity when exposed to visual gambling cues.
METHODS: Ten male DSM-IV-TR PG subjects and 10 matched healthy control subjects underwent fMRI during visual presentations o
