BACKGROUND: Performance-enhancing drugs are frequently used by bodybuilders: anabolic steroids, growth hormone and insulin, only to mention a few. Many little known drugs are also used.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two men aged 20 and 32 years, both active bodybuilders, complained about lassitude and malaise. Clinical and laboratory evaluation revealed an unusual cause of their complaints.

Sorption mechanisms of 1,3- and 1,4-dinitrobenzene, 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB), dinitro-o-creasol, and 6-sec-butyl-2,4-dinitrophenol (DINOSEB) on smectite were investigated using FTIR spectroscopy and HPLC methods. A quantitative method was developed that established a direct link between the HPLC and the FTIR data. Isotope technique and determination of the intramitochondrial concentration of GSH were used with the aim of studying the uptake of alloxan in isolated mouse mitochondria. This study is the first attempt to apply the heat-accumulation technique for metabolic studies to the pancreas. The initial temperature rise during arterial occlusion was measured with thermocouples sutured into the pancreas of seven anaesthetized pigs. Temperature recording were obtained during alterations of the metabolism induced by infusions of 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) and sodium cyanide (NaCN) into the pancreatic head. 2,4-Dinitrophenol, dicoumarol, carbonylcyanide, m-chlorophenyl-hydrazone and pentachlorophenol all depressed aerobic molar growth yields of Streptococcus agalactiae to values equal to, or less than, those supported by substrate level phosphorylation.
