Epigenetic age acceleration and mortality among persons with poorly controlled HIV.

We sought to assess the relationship between HIV infection and disease severity with epigenetic age and to examine the combined association of epigenetic age acceleration and HIV infection with mortality. Participants were drawn from the ALIVE study, a community-based cohort of persons who inject drugs (PWID) in Baltimore, MD, USA. DNA from buffy coat samples was bisulfite-treated and assayed using the Illumina MethylationEPIC BeadChip. Repeated assessment of epigenetic age was indexed using PhenoAge, Horvath age, Hannum age, GrimAge, and DunedinPACE. Annual linkage to the National Death Index

[Shorter stays, greater pressure? Insights into the acceleration of inpatient care].

In a context of economic pressure on hospitals, reducing the average length of stay has become essential in internal medicine. 37,218 hospitalizations at the Fribourg Hospital (2019-2024) were analyzed retrospectively using three exploratory non-validated indicators: daytime blood sampling, CT-scans performed within six hours, and admissions after 4:00 pm. All showed a significant increase, reflecting an acceleration of the clinical decision-making and care process. This evolution raises questions about organizational consequences, workload, and the meaning of the medical profession.

Relationship between acceleration of axial elongation and ocular biometry in schoolchildren.

PURPOSE: The speed of axial elongation typically slows during the growth phase; however, in some eyes, it accelerates, leading to myopia progression during school age. This study examined the association between ocular biometrics and the acceleration of axial elongation (AAE) in children. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal, prospective, observational study METHODS: This cohort study included 67 right eyes of elementary school children, tracked over six years (from ages 8.5 to 14.5). Annual measurements were conducted for optical axial length, anterior chamber depth, and lens thickness. Yearly axial e

Wearable Acceleration Plethysmography for Carotid Pulse Pressure Monitoring: A Feasibility Study.

Central blood pressure (CBP), which is the pressure at the aorta and other central arterial sites such as the carotid, is more predictive of target organ damage and future adverse events, as opposed to conventional blood pressure assessed at more peripheral sites. However, methods to estimate CBP are complex, require frequent calibration and are not suitable for continuous tracking purposes. Here, we introduce a wearable accelerometer based pressure sensing system to track carotid pulse pressure (PP). The wearable system detects the transcutaneous pressure (PT) on the skin surface over the car

Enhancing reading speed: the reading acceleration effect in Italian adult readers.

INTRODUCTION: Enhancing reading efficiency is of paramount importance in various academic, professional and clinical domains. Previous research, mostly from a single laboratory, has shown that externally imposed time constraints by means of text fading can enhance reading fluency in children and adults with varying reading abilities and in different languages. METHODS: In the present study, we aimed at replicating and extending previous results in Italian readers. Three experiments (N = 90) were conducted: (i) to investigate the effects of continuous fading compared to character-wise fading,

Automatically Identifying Sickness Behavior in Grazing Lambs with an Acceleration Sensor.

Acute disease of grazing animals can lead to alterations in behavioral patterns. Relatively recent advances in accelerometer technology have resulted in commercial products, which can be used to remotely detect changes in animals' behavior, the pattern and extent of which may provide an indicator of disease challenge and animal health status. The objective of this study was to determine if changes in behavior during use of a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge model can be detected using ear-mounted accelerometers in grazing lambs. LPS infusion elevated rectal temperatures from 39.31 °C to 39.9

Head acceleration during impacts on snow: evaluation of a ski helmet.

OBJECTIVES: Current standards require ski helmets to meet acceleration criteria during impacts to a rigid surface, but do not require helmets to be evaluated for head impacts to snow, which is a common cause of traumatic brain injury in skiing and snowboarding. The objective of this study is to measure head linear acceleration during impacts to snow, with and without a ski helmet. METHODS: A portable test bench was developed and used to perform drop test of an instrumented headform onto groomed ski slopes. Impacts were made on the top of the head with and without a helmet, at three speeds (5.

Consensus Head Acceleration Measurement Practices (CHAMP): Study Design and Statistical Analysis.

Head impact measurement devices enable opportunities to collect impact data directly from humans to study topics like concussion biomechanics, head impact exposure and its effects, and concussion risk reduction techniques in sports when paired with other relevant data. With recent advances in head impact measurement devices and cost-effective price points, more and more investigators are using them to study brain health questions. However, as the field's literature grows, the variance in study quality is apparent. This brief paper aims to provide a high-level set of key considerations for the

Acceleration of Biexciton Radiative Recombination at Low Temperature in CdSe Nanoplatelets.

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals offer bandgap tunability, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and colloidal processing of benefit to optoelectronics, however rapid nonradiative Auger recombination (AR) deleteriously affects device efficiencies at elevated excitation intensities. AR is understood to transition from temperature-dependent behavior in bulk semiconductors to temperature-independent behavior in zero-dimensional quantum dots (QDs) as a result of discretized band structure that facilitates satisfaction of linear momentum conservation. For nanoplatelets (NPLs), two-dimensional m

Gait-Based Identification Using Deep Recurrent Neural Networks and Acceleration Patterns.

This manuscript presents an approach to the challenge of biometric identification based on the acceleration patterns generated by a user while walking. The proposed approach uses the data captured by a smartphone's accelerometer and gyroscope sensors while the users perform the gait activity and optimizes the design of a recurrent neural network (RNN) to optimally learn the features that better characterize each individual. The database is composed of 15 users, and the acceleration data provided has a tri-axial format in the X-Y-Z axes. Data are pre-processed to estimate the vertical accelerat

A Porcine Model of Traumatic Brain Injury via Head Rotational Acceleration.

Unique from other brain disorders, traumatic brain injury (TBI) generally results from a discrete biomechanical event that induces rapid head movement. The large size and high organization of the human brain makes it particularly vulnerable to traumatic injury from rotational accelerations that can cause dynamic deformation of the brain tissue. Therefore, replicating the injury biomechanics of human TBI in animal models presents a substantial challenge, particularly with regard to addressing brain size and injury parameters. Here we present the historical development and use of a porcine model

High-Frequency Acceleration: Therapeutic Tool to Preserve Bone following Tooth Extractions.

A common problem in clinical dentistry is the significant and rapid bone loss that occurs after tooth extraction. Currently there is no solution for the long-term preservation of alveolar bone. Previously, we showed that high-frequency acceleration (HFA) has an osteogenic effect on healthy alveolar bone. However, it is not known if HFA can preserve alveolar bone after extraction without negatively affecting wound healing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of HFA on alveolar bone loss and the rate of bone formation after tooth extraction. Eighty-five adult Sprague-Dawley rats

Aging after noise exposure: acceleration of cochlear synaptopathy in "recovered" ears.

Cochlear synaptic loss, rather than hair cell death, is the earliest sign of damage in both noise- and age-related hearing impairment (Kujawa and Liberman, 2009; Sergeyenko et al., 2013). Here, we compare cochlear aging after two types of noise exposure: one producing permanent synaptic damage without hair cell loss and another producing neither synaptopathy nor hair cell loss. Adult mice were exposed (8-16 kHz, 100 or 91 dB SPL for 2 h) and then evaluated from 1 h to ∼ 20 months after exposure. Cochlear function was assessed via distortion product otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem

Reading acceleration training changes brain circuitry in children with reading difficulties.

INTRODUCTION: Dyslexia is characterized by slow, inaccurate reading. Previous studies have shown that the Reading Acceleration Program (RAP) improves reading speed and accuracy in children and adults with dyslexia and in typical readers across different orthographies. However, the effect of the RAP on the neural circuitry of reading has not been established. In the current study, we examined the effect of the RAP training on regions of interest in the neural circuitry for reading using a lexical decision task during fMRI in children with reading difficulties and typical readers. METHODS: Chil

Acceleration of tooth movement during orthodontic treatment--a frontier in orthodontics.

Nowadays, there is an increased tendency for researches to focus on accelerating methods for tooth movement due to the huge demand for adults for a shorter orthodontic treatment time. Unfortunately, long orthodontic treatment time poses several disadvantages like higher predisposition to caries, gingival recession, and root resorption. This increases the demand to find the best method to increase tooth movement with the least possible disadvantages. The purpose of this study is to view the successful approaches in tooth movement and to highlight the newest technique in tooth movement. A total
