Dystonic Movement Disorder as Symptom of Catatonia in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Catatonia is increasingly recognized as a comorbid psychiatric condition in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the overlap of behavioral characteristics between these disorders raises many diagnostic challenges. Moreover, recognizing symptoms in ASD patients with medium-low functioning might be difficult. Literature on this argument is poor, especially for children. Case presentation. We report the case of an ASD patient with low cognitive functioning, who presented a complex symptomatology, characterized by progressive regression with loss of autonomy and involuntary movements th

Parental Stress and Coping in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Network Analysis of Internalizing and Externalizing Symptoms in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Parental stress and coping strategies play a pivotal role in shaping mental health outcomes for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While traditional research has examined linear relationships, network analysis offers a novel lens to uncover dynamic interactions between parental factors and child psychopathology. This study employs advanced network modeling to map how specific stress dimensions and coping mechanisms differentially associate with internalizing (e.g., anxiety) and externalizing (e.g., aggression) symptoms. Our findings provide clinically actionable insigh

Unraveling the Spectrum: A Comprehensive Review of Autism Spectrum Disorder in India.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social interaction, communication difficulties, and repetitive behaviors that profoundly impact the lives of affected individuals and their families. This article provides a comprehensive overview of ASD, focusing on screening, diagnosis, and intervention strategies. Early signs of ASD can manifest in infancy, but parents may not recognize them until their child falls behind in meeting social milestones. This delay in recognition is often due to a lack of awareness, societal stigma, and limite

[Mental disorders in the dental practice. Autism spectrum disorder].

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder with a prevalence of about 1% of the population. This disorder, characterised by limitations in the domain of social communication, interaction, flexibility and processing stimuli, often requires additional attention in the dental practice. The disorder can have an effect on both general health and oral health as a result of unusual eating habits, problems with oral hygiene, the use of psychotropic medications or a vitamin D deficiency. The treatment of patients with an autism spectrum disorder generally also requires more time and patience

Different autism measures targeting different severity levels in children with autism spectrum disorder.

The Childhood Autism Rating Scale™, Second Edition (CARS™-2) and Social Responsiveness Scale™, Second Edition (SRS™-2) are two measures for identifying autism symptoms. The CARS™-2 has two versions: Standard (CARS-ST) and High-Functioning (CARS-HF). To better understand their properties, this study aimed to investigate: (1) the associations among the CARS-ST, CARS-HF and the SRS™-2, and (2) the severity consistency between the CARS-ST and the CARS-HF. A sample of 125 children with autism spectrum disorder was recruited (mean age: 80.98 months, SD = 16.08). Based on Verbal Comprehension Index (

Phenotypic spectrum associated with duplication of Xp11.22-p11.23 includes Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Dup(X)(p11.22-p11.23) has been shown to be associated with intellectual disability (ID, also referred to as mental retardation). Here, we characterize a 4.64 Mb de novo duplication of the same Xp11.22-p11.23 ID region in a female, but for this reference case the diagnosis was Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Besides ASD, she also had very persistent trichotillomania, anxiety symptoms and some non-specific dysmorphic features. We report the detailed clinical features, as well as refine the rearrangement breakpoints of this disease-associated copy number variation region, which encompasses more t

Perinatal and maternal factors associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Prenatal and perinatal exposures have been implicated in ASD etiology, but their influence may vary across clinical subgroups, including subgroups defined by co-occurring intellectual disability (ID). METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-control study in southern Sweden including all children diagnosed with ASD before the age of 9, and whose mothers were born in Sweden. Diagnoses were confirmed through detailed medical record review, and inf

REM Sleep Abnormalities in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Sleep disturbances are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the sleep pattern changes including rapid eye movement (REM) sleep for ASD in pediatric populations remain unknown. Using polysomnography (PSG) data from the National Children's Hospital (NCH) Sleep Databank, we identified 193 children with ASD and matched them with 193 Non-ASD controls. We found children with ASD showed reduced REM sleep proportion (17.8% ± 6.4% vs. 19.1% ± 7.0%; p = 0.049) and duration (71.5 [49.5-91.0] min vs. 81.5 [52.5-98.0] min; p = 0.036), prolonged REM latency (134.5 [94.0-181.5] mi

Cortical development dynamics across autism spectrum disorder mouse models.

Despite the functional diversity of over 100 causal genes1-3, phenotypic convergence across models may reveal common neurobiological processes in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Here we profiled 251 samples from 11 monogenic mouse models of ASD using single-nucleus multi-omic sequencing across three developmental stages, both sexes and two brain regions. Despite genetic heterogeneity, ASD-linked mutations converged on perturbations of the radial glial cell lineage. These alterations reflect a transient developmental delay rather than lasting lineage misspecification and resolve by postnatal st

Developmental Disturbances in Animal Models of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Although the early signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are widely studied, the significant ambiguity and heterogeneity in symptoms require the comparison of available models, approaches, and the search for common denominators and key indicators. Early ASD symptoms in animal models include impaired somatic development (e.g., delayed eye opening), alterations in primitive motor reflexes, disrupted sensory function as well as communication deficits, such as reduced ultrasonic vocalization. This review aims to summarize early ASD-related symptoms based on studies involving transgenic or neurot

Neural Tracking of Social Navigation in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: As we navigate changing social landscapes, maintaining maps of interpersonal dynamics can help guide our choices. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with social challenges that may affect the accumulation or application of social information. However, little is known about social cognitive mapping in autistic adults. METHODS: Herein, we investigated differences in social navigation among 122 adults with ASD, typical development (TD), and misophonia (MIS) (included as a clinical comparison group) using a social interaction task during functional magnetic resonance imaging

The differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in adults is challenging due to its heterogeneity and symptom overlap with other conditions. Making an accurate diagnosis can be difficult and overwhelming but is vital for proper accommodations and interventions while avoiding unproductive or harmful treatments. AREAS COVERED: The authors have based their review on a comprehensive literature search using PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar to identify relevant recommendations, diagnostic tools, and common differential diagnoses for adults with ASD. Myopia and astigmatism in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Of 894,375 Israeli adolescents undergoing standardized medical and ocular assessments in our nationwide cross-sectional study, 2,622 (0.3%) had autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Adolescents with ASD had significantly higher adjusted odds of both myopia and astigmatism compared with peers who did not have ASD. The relative odds of refractive error in ASD increased with both myopia severity and astigmatism cylinder power. Associations were consistent across all astigmatism axis orientations, most notably with-the-rule. These findings suggest that early and routine vision screening may be beneficia

Gastrointestinal health and nutritional strategies in autism spectrum disorder.

Beyond the hallmark social and sensory difficulties in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the comorbid gastrointestinal (GI) conditions and their potential link to the severity of core symptoms require clinical attention. Although evidence indicates that autistic children face a greater risk of GI disorders and require more intensive nutritional management compared to neurotypical peers, standard guidelines for managing GI symptoms in this population remain lacking. This review seeks to pinpoint critical considerations for the implementation of nutrition-based strategies aimed at addressing GI dy

Assessing dive fitness in individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

Scuba diving requires situational awareness, cognitive flexibility, and the ability to adapt to changing conditions. For individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), these demands may pose unique challenges due to differences in executive functioning, sensory processing, and social cognition. This article explores the key considerations in assessing fitness to dive in individuals with ASD, including the impact of comorbidities, medication use, and cognitive abilities on diving safety. To provide a broader perspective, we examine research on ASD and high-risk activities such as driving, whe

Autism spectrum disorder and 3p24.3p23 triplication: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The role of copy number variants as genomic mutations causative of neurodevelopmental disorders has been recently established. They can act as risk factors of conditions with multifactorial etiopathogenesis and incomplete penetrance, such as nonsyndromic autism, and, in this case, are often inherited from an unaffected parent. Conversely, dominant syndromes, with high penetrance, can be caused by de novo occurring variants. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the clinical case, with a detailed characterization of the neuropsychiatric profile, of an almost 3-year-old white (Italian) mal

Association between autism spectrum disorder and intentional self-harm.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent challenges in communication and social interaction and, often accompanied by restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. The reported prevalence of ASD in the United States has tripled in the past two decades. Recent studies indicate that ASD is associated with increased self-injurious behaviors. The purpose of this study is to assess the excess risk of intentional self-harm associated with ASD. METHODS: Using a repeated cross-sectional study design, we analyzed data from

Mean Corpuscular Volume and Risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be diagnosed as early as 18 months old, but more reliably after two years. Notably, no laboratory test exists to identify mothers at higher risk of having a child who will later be diagnosed with ASD or to identify at-risk infants before the manifestation of symptoms. One frequently described risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders is vitamin B12 and folate deficiency, which results in macrocytic anemias. METHODS: We evaluated whether increased mean corpuscular volume (MCV), an indicator of macrocytic anemias in the mother or child, is assoc
