BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection which may cause multiple non-specific symptoms. Transmission of the disease can occur via rats or surface water infected by rats. The Netherlands have seen a record number of cases of leptospirosis in 2019. Diagnosis is often delayed and not always considered because of the variable clinical presentation of the disease. Surveillance of disease prevention concerning rat breeders is inadequate.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 11-year-old girl visited the paediatrician with fever, myalgia and a headache followed by a stiff neck. Two days earlier she was bi

This study explored the impact of feeding raw meat to dogs on the fecal prevalence of several enteric bacterial zoonotic pathogens. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from 1/42 (2.6%) raw meat-fed dogs. Salmonella enterica was isolated from 2/40 (5%) of the raw meat feeds, 6/42 (14%) raw meat-fed dog feces, none of the dogs that did not receive raw meat (P = 0.001), 4/38 (10.5%) of the vacuum cleaner waste samples from households where raw meat was fed, and 2/44 (4.5%) of vacuum cleaner waste samples from households where raw meat was not fed to dogs (P = 0.41). Responses to a questionnaire pro

Bacterial zoonoses pose a serious threat to the development of animal husbandry, food safety, and public health. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a major infectious and food-borne pathogen worldwide, and there was an urgent need to develop relevant methodologies for the control of bacterial infections. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cell-free supernatants (CFSs) produced by selected strains of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L. plantarum), Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (L. rhamnosus), Streptococcus thermophilus (S. thermophilus), and Bifidobacterium longum subspecies infan

Bacteria are relevant in rodent quality assurance programmes if (a) the animals are at risk and (b) presence in the animals makes a difference for animal research or welfare, for example because the agent regulates clinical disease progression or impacts its host in other ways. Furthermore, zoonoses are relevant. Some bacterial species internationally recommended for the health monitoring of rats and mice, that is, Citrobacter rodentium, Corynebacterium kutscheri, Salmonella spp. and Streptococcus pneumonia, are no longer found in either laboratory or pet shop rats or mice, while there is stil

Neurological complications of infectious diseases are associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. It is imperative that neurologists be up-to-date on current developments including typical and atypical presentations of neurological infections in travelers, diagnostic and treatment recommendations, and emerging pathogen resistance patterns to avoid fatal outcomes and long-term sequelae. This article will address concepts of emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, and will provide updates on the neurological manifestations of select emerging and reemerging infections, including E

This study shows the absence of the world's most common bacterial zoonoses caused by Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis in cattle, goats and dogs in an agro-pastoral community in South Africa, where heifer vaccination against brucellosis with the live Strain 19 vaccine is compulsory. The study site is bordering wildlife reserves with multiple wildlife species infected with brucellosis. The results showed a low seroprevalence (1.4%) in cattle. Seroprevalence in cattle decreased with age after 4 years in females, males were less positive than females and a tissue culture from a brucellin s

In the last years emerging infections represent an important problem of public health and occupational medicine. Biological agents and their hosts exist in a precariously balanced and continuously evolving relationship, influenced by their environment. RNA viruses are responsible for most of the emerging diseases. Epidemics that recently affected the world of work are zoonoses, such as cases of SARS in healthcare staff Dutch poultry workers infected with the avian virus A/H7N7 in 2003, the current threat of avian flu A/H5N1 to poultry workers. Workers at risk include those who are in contact w

There are three main reasons for using antimicrobial agents in pig production: animal welfare, carcase quality and economics. The need to treat sick animals and to mitigate the effects of infection is of paramount humanitarian importance. The reduction of the pathological effects of infection is an essential aspect of carcase quality and of possible value in the control of potential zoonoses. It is beyond dispute that the judicious use of antimicrobial agents improves growth efficiency. In addition there are economic benefits to be gained from the control of infection in terms of improved carc

Bordetella bronchiseptica, long regarded as a veterinary pathogen, is now emerging as a zoonotic threat to humans, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. We report a sentinel event involving a synchronized B. bronchiseptica outbreak in swine and their human caretaker, providing a unique opportunity to examine cross-species transmission and adaptation at the genomic level. Comparative genomics revealed that the human-adapted isolate (RL57) and its swine progenitor (XX35) share an identical chromosome, with XX35 harbouring an extra conjugative plasmid. Remarkably, RL57 did not simply los

Bacterial pathogens of the families Anaplasmataceae and Rickettsiaceae are often spread to humans or other animals from bites from infected arthropod hosts. Recently, an increasing number of studies have implicated migratory birds in the circulation of these pathogens through the spread of arthropod vectors. However, few studies have examined the potential for resident bird populations to serve as reservoirs for these zoonoses. In this study, we used nested PCRs of the GroESL and 17 kDa genes to screen for Anaplasmataceae and Rickettsiaceae, respectively, in a resident population of the northe

Brucellosis is the one of most common livestock zoonoses in Georgia, resulting in significant economic losses. Livestock were sampled in three regions of Georgia (Kakheti, Kvemo Kartli, Imereti). Districts that historically reported high numbers of brucellosis related morbidity were selected for serological, bacteriological and molecular surveys. Surveying efforts yielded samples from 10,819 large and small ruminants. In total, 735 serological tests were positive on Rose Bengal and 33 bacterial isolates were recovered and identified as Brucella melitensis or Brucella abortus by microbiology an

Changes in the epidemiology of infectious diseases are the direct result of ecological and evolutionary changes in hosts and parasites. Precisely what the causal processes are is rarely known in any particular case, and this hinders the design of appropriate control strategies. This is particularly so for emerging infections, as opportunity is rapidly lost to study the ecological parameters which might have affected initial emergence. However, molecular evolutionary studies of the pathogens can yield data which discriminate between possible causes. The current distribution of DNA sequence vari

Salmonella enterica serotypes (Salmonella sp.) are the second cause of bacterial foodborne zoonoses in humans after campylobacteriosis. Pork is the third most important cause for outbreak-associated salmonellosis, and colibacillosis is the most important disease in piglets and swine. Attachment to host cells, translocation of effector proteins into host cells, invasion and replication in tissues are the vital virulence steps of these pathogens that help them to thrive in the intestinal environment and invade tissues. Feed contamination is an important source for Salmonella infection in pig pro

Brucellosis is one of the most widespread bacterial zoonoses worldwide. Here, our aim was to identify the effector mechanisms controlling the early stages of intranasal infection with Brucella in C57BL/6 mice. During the first 48 hours of infection, alveolar macrophages (AMs) are the main cells infected in the lungs. Using RNA sequencing, we identified the aconitate decarboxylase 1 gene (Acod1; also known as Immune responsive gene 1), as one of the genes most upregulated in murine AMs in response to B. melitensis infection at 24 hours post-infection. Upregulation of Acod1 was confirmed by RT-q

UNLABELLED: Bacterial zoonoses constitute a significant proportion of emerging infectious diseases. Yet, the diversity and transmission cycles of many zoonotic bacteria remain poorly characterized, particularly in tropical, biodiverse regions where host and vector diversity are high, and the burden of zoonotic disease in human populations is substantial. In this study, we investigated the presence of five pathogenic bacterial genera-Rickettsia, Borrelia, Orientia, Leptospira, and Coxiella-in rodents from southern India. We detected low circulation of Rickettsia (7.26%), Borrelia (6.45%), and L

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is one species in the commensal staphylococcal population in dogs. While it is commonly carried on healthy companion dogs it is also an opportunistic pathogen associated with a range of skin, ear, wound and other infections. While adapted to dogs, it is not restricted to them, and we have reviewed its host range, including increasing reports of human colonisation and infections. Despite its association with pet dogs, S. pseudintermedius is found widely in animals, covering companion, livestock and free-living species of birds and mammals. Human infections, typic

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Bacteria of the genera Vibrio and Aeromonas cause seafood-borne zoonoses, which may have a significant impact on food safety, economy, and public health worldwide. The presence of drug-resistant and biofilm-forming phenotypes in the food chain increases the risk for consumers. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics, virulence, biofilm production, and dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens isolated from seafood markets in Bangkok, Thailand.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 120 retail seafood samples were collected from 10 local markets in Bangkok a

Indigenous communities face a disproportionate burden of neglected communicable diseases, particularly acute diarrheal disease (ADD) and bacterial febrile illness (BFI), in contexts with limited access to diagnosis and medical care. The circulation of bacteria associated with ADD and BFI was evaluated in Wayuu indigenous communities of northern Colombia. Four health brigades were conducted in 14 Wayuu communities, with 86 ADD samples, 210 BFI blood samples, and 237 BFI serum samples for BFI collected according to clinical symptoms. The samples were analyzed using conventional bacteriology, rea
