Asymptomatic bacteriuria and urinary tract infections among renal allograft recipients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Bacteriuria is common among renal allograft recipients. It can be categorized into asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) and urinary tract infection (UTI). However, in medical literature, the classifications of bacteriuria are often not clear or ASB is also classified as a UTI. This contributes to difficulties in interpretation of the incidence and risk factors of these two entities. In this review, we describe the epidemiology, risk factors, management and the impact on renal allograft function of these two entities separately according to the recent literature. RECENT FINDINGS:

Molecular epidemiology of catheter-associated bacteriuria in nursing home patients.

Urine samples from 19 nursing home patients with long-term urinary catheters were cultured every 3 months for 18 months. Providencia stuartii, present in 74% of the elderly and in 59% of urine specimens, was the most frequently isolated bacteria. The persistence of P. stuartii was significantly higher among females than among males. In order to study the epidemiology of bacteriuria in this nursing home, bacteria were characterized by biochemical tests, antibiotic susceptibility pattern, and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. The antibiotic susceptibility pattern indicate

Asymptomatic bacteriuria, bacteremia, and other infections due to NSU corynebacteria.

By means of the new medium, nonspecific urethritis (NSU) chocolate agar, NSU corymebacteria were isolated from patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria, bacteremia, cervicitis, conjuctivitis, and pericarditis, and also with bone marrow, wound, and cul-de-sac infections. The NSU corynebacteria were considered the etiologic agents. On the basis of biochemical reactions, antibiotic sensitivity, and complement fixation tests some isolates were the same microorganisms. Both patients with conjunctivitis were infected with the same NSU corynebacteria. A second isolate was cultured from patients with os

Asymptomatic bacteriuria and urinary tract infections in kidney transplant recipients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common infection in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Several elements increase the risk of UTI and/or modify its clinical presentation among KTRs (e.g. immunosuppressive therapy, kidney allograft denervation, and use of urinary catheters). Also, KTRs may have UTIs because of difficult-to-identify and/or difficult-to-treat organisms. We provide an overview of the current knowledge regarding bacterial UTIs in KTRs, with a focus on recent findings. RECENT FINDINGS: There is accumulating evidence from clinical trials that screening

Asymptomatic bacteriuria in users of low-dose combined oral contraceptives.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between oral contraceptive use and the prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria in women. METHODS: The study was conducted on healthy women of childbearing age who either used low-dose combined oral contraceptives (COCs; cases) or applied the withdrawal method (controls). A positive urine culture with a colony count of more than 10(5)/ml, with the same bacteria on two consecutive specimens, was defined as asymptomatic bacteriuria. Pyuria was defined as the presence of ≥ 10 leukocytes per mm3 of urine. RESULTS: Overall, 369 women in the COC group and 3

[Is autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease associated with asymptomatic bacteriuria?].

UNLABELLED: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common complication in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Asymptomatic bacteriuria (AB) is a factor predisposing to UTI in other populations. The aim of the study was to determine whether AB is more frequent in a group of ADPKD patients with normal kidney function and no diabetes than in a healthy control group. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 49 ADPKD patients (19 men and 30 women) with normal kidney function (creatinine level < 1.35 mg/dl) and no diabetes, with an average age of 35.9 +/- 11.1 years was compa

The uriscreen test to detect significant asymptomatic bacteriuria during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) occurs in 2-11% of pregnancies and it is a clear predisposition to the development of acute pyelonephritis, which, in turn, poses risk to mother and fetus. Treatment of bacteriuria during pregnancy reduces the incidence of pyelonephritis. Therefore, it is recommended to screen for ASB at the first prenatal visit. The gold standard for detection of bacteriuria during pregnancy is urine culture, but this test is expensive, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. OBJECTIVE: To determine the reliability of an enzymatic urine screening test (Uriscreen; Savyo

Bacteria associated with canine pyometra and concurrent bacteriuria: A prospective study.

Canine pyometra is a common and potentially life-threatening reproductive disorder in intact female dogs. This prospective study aimed to (1) investigate the bacterial spectrum and antimicrobial susceptibilities of bacterial isolates from the uterus and urine of dogs with pyometra, (2) assess the clonal relatedness and virulence factors of Escherichia coli isolates from individual dogs, and (3) determine the occurrence of concurrent and persistent bacteriuria or clinical urinary tract infections. Bacterial isolates from 208 uterine and 203 urine specimens collected during pyometra surgery were

Antibiotics for delirium in older adults with pyuria or bacteriuria: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether antibiotics impact delirium outcomes in older adults with pyuria or bacteriuria in the absence of systemic signs of infection or genitourinary symptoms. METHODS: We registered our systematic review protocol with PROSPERO (CRD42023418091). We searched the Medline and Embase databases from inception until April 2023 for studies investigating the impact of antimicrobial treatment on the duration and severity of delirium in older adults (≥60 years) with pyuria (white blood cells detected on urinalysis or dipstick) or bacteriuria (bacteria growing on urine culture

Clinical significance of concomitant bacteriuria in patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia.

This retrospective study, conducted at Lausanne University Hospital (2015-2021), compared Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (SABA) patients with or without concomitant bacteriuria (SABU). Among 448 included bacteraemic patients, 62 (13.8%) had S. aureus concurrently isolated from urine. In multivariate analysis, there was a significant difference in the odds of community-onset bacteraemia (P 0.030), malignancy (P 0.002), > 1 pair of positive blood cultures (P 0.037), and persistent bacteraemia for at least 48 h (P 0.045) in patients with concurrent SABU. No difference concerning mortality was

Causative organisms and antimicrobial susceptibility in jaundiced infants with significant bacteriuria.

BACKGROUND: Jaundice may be one of the first signs of urinary tract infection (UTI) in infants. The most common pathogen is Escherichia coli. Currently recommended antibiotic treatment for neonatal UTI is ampicillin and an aminoglycoside. Recently, increasing ampicillin and gentamicin resistance in strains of E. coli has been isolated. The aim of this study was to determine causative organisms and antimicrobial susceptibility in jaundiced infants with significant bacteriuria (SB). METHODS: We evaluated admitted afebrile, asymptomatic infants younger than 1-month old with hyperbilirubinemia (t

A Case-Control Study on the Association between Salmonella Bacteriuria and Cystoscopy.

To date, there is only one published report of an outbreak of urinary tract infections by Salmonella species after cystoscopy. Disinfection procedures for cystoscope have come into question. The current study aimed to determine the odds of developing Salmonella bacteriuria after cystoscopy. A retrospective case-control study was conducted on all patients with Salmonella species in urine (case) and blood (control) from 2017 to 2019 in 16 hospitals in Eastern Ontario, Canada. Eight of the 11 patients had cystoscopy prior to Salmonella bacteriuria; three of the 74 patients had urological procedur

Urinary tract infection and subclinical bacteriuria in cats: A clinical update.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is an important cause of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), particularly in female cats older than 10 years of age. In addition to cats with typical clinical signs of FLUTD or upper UTI, many cats have subclinical bacteriuria, but the clinical relevance of this is currently uncertain. UTIs are one of the most important indications for antimicrobial use in veterinary medicine and contribute to the development of antimicrobial resistance. Adherence to treatment guidelines and confinement to a few first-line antimicrobial agents is imper
