This article reports the pilot study of electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback to improve focusing and decrease anxiety in 10 adolescent boys diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome attending a therapeutic day school. Five of the boys dropped out of the study before 12 sessions were completed. The analysis of pre- and post-intervention quantitative EEGs for the five students who completed the study showed a trend to "normalization", but did not reach statistical significance. All five boys who completed 24 sessions showed improved behavior as rated by parents and teachers, but other factors, such a

The application of electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback with reading disability and traumatic brain injury (TBI) is relatively recent. There are many studies regarding the effectiveness (improving attention and IQ scores) of EEG biofeedback in patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, who are known to have a high rate of comorbidity for learning disabilities. This suggests the possibility that EEG biofeedback specifically aimed at remediating reading disability and TBI would be effective. This article provides strong initial support for this idea and provides reason to believe

The efficacy of visually displayed EMG feedback in treating hemiplegic upper limb motor disorders was investigated in 5 patients (0.5-4 years poststroke). A single case experimental method "multiple-baseline across target behaviors" was used to compare performance during the feedback phase to that occurring in the monitored baseline phase. The nonfeedback baseline phase was followed by the staggered introduction of audiovisual feedback for each of the targeted pairs of muscles. EMG feedback obtained from muscle pairs (shoulder: anterior deltoid and upper trapezius; elbow: brachial triceps and

In a comparison among relaxation procedures, 32 college students were assigned to four group of equal size. Electromyographic response training was given with biofeedback (EMG training) on the forehead (frontal area) alone, on the frontal area, neck (sternomastoid), and forearm areas in succession, or on these three sites in conjunction with recorded relaxation instructions used at home. Relative to a control group, which received no training, the three biofeedback-trained groups maintained lower EMG levels on the frontal and sternomastoid sites, and the group provided with the relaxation inst

The authors report of their experience in the rehabilitation of active functions in the upper extremities of 22 children with sequelae of birth injuries of the shoulder plexi of the Erb type. In order to accelerate the reconstruction of the function of the transplanted trapezius muscle a method of adaptive bioregulations is suggested which permitted to quantify the doses of developed muscular tension and control the movements. The obtained results give ground to positively evaluate this method, based on the principle of external reverse connection in the rehabilitative period following an oper

OBJECTIVE: To establish the effectiveness of EEG biofeedback using beta training as a relaxation technique and ultimately reducing anxiety levels of patients with confirmed unstable angina or myocardial infarction.
METHODOLOGY: Patients with confirmed unstable angina or myocardial infarction referred by cardiologists were recruited 2-3 days after their cardiac event from the cardiology wards. Their initial anxiety scores were determined using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Those that returned for therapy underwent instrument feedback training using EEG every two weeks for a total

The first article in this two-part series (Vol 5(22): 1366-74) discussed the prevalence, aetiology and investigation of faecal incontinence in adults. The second article summarizes the main treatment options available for faecal incontinence. Surgery is the most widely available intervention, and offers a reasonable chance of success for appropriately selected individuals. Drug therapy is currently limited to constipating agents, which can be very useful for people with internal anal sphincter disruption. The potential role of biofeedback is promising and warrants further research. Management

This report concerns the use of two methods of training subjects to tolerate visually-induced motion sickness (VMS). Sixteen subjects were selected on the basis of their response to a motion sickness history questionnaire and assigned to one of four groups on the basis of their ability to tolerate visually-induced motion (VM). One group received 10 sessions of confidence building and desensitization training (BT); a second group received 10 sessions of EMG and temperature biofeedback (FB); a third group received 10 sessions of BT and 10 sessions of FB (BTFB); and a fourth group received no tre

Working Memory (WM) is an essential component of Executive Functions, directly related to academic performance, cognitive regulation, and well-being. Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRVB) has emerged as a promising intervention due to its efficacy in autonomic modulation and potential effects on cognitive function. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the available evidence on the relationship between HRVB and WM performance. A search was conducted in August 2025 in the Web of Science, PubMed, and PsycINFO databases, resulting in 59 identified studies, of which 10 met the inclusion cri

Digital devices, particularly smartphones and tablets, are used by the vast majority of the global population. This usage often causes the head to tilt forward, placing significant strain on the neck and shoulders. While this posture adversely affects healthy individuals, it is particularly problematic for scoliosis patients, exacerbating spinal deformation. Therefore, this study evaluates the effectiveness of a 30-session surface electromyography (sEMG) biofeedback posture training program for managing spinal curvature progression in adolescents with mild scoliosis. The program is aimed at re

Anxiety and sleep disturbances frequently coexist due to common autonomic dysregulation. This review emphasises wind-instrument training as an intervention that integrates intentional breath regulation with self-produced auditory feedback to influence vagal tone and maintain arousal stability. We performed a systematic review and mechanistic analysis, querying PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO and the Cochrane Library (2000-2024) for clinical and experimental studies on wind-instrument training, and synthesised pathways connecting respiration, auditory processing and autonomic regulation. Initial evide

Functional constipation is a common clinical diagnosis that affects approximately 14% of the world's population. Non-pharmacological therapies often represent the initial steps in management and may include lifestyle adjustments or changes such as physical activity and diet. Pharmacological options have been used when the non-pharmacological approach has been ineffective. Biofeedback therapy, surgery, sacral nerve stimulation, botulinum toxin injection, and vibrating capsules can be considered in scenarios where the laxatives are ineffective. Biofeedback therapy is highly effective and safe in

Pharmacotherapies are the mainstays of migraine management, though it is not uncommon for them to be poorly tolerated, contraindicated, or only modestly effective. There is a clear need for nonpharmacologic migraine therapies, either employed alone or in combination with pharmacotherapies. Behavioral and psychosocial factors known to contribute to the onset, exacerbation, and persistence of primary headache disorders (e.g., stress, sleep, diet) serve as targets within a self-management model for migraine-a model that features headache pharmacotherapies, behavioral skills training, medication a

BACKGROUND: A strong core is a key to stability, posture, and strength. To reduce back pain and improve functional movement deep abdominal muscles are targeted. Use a sphygmomanometer for reliable, objective core muscle strength and stability measurements based on the resistance applied. A pressure biofeedback unit (PBU) can provide feedback on core muscle function, helping to enhance lumbopelvic stability and overall core function.
METHODS: A study compared two devices in assessing core strength. Electronic databases like PubMed, MEDLINE and Google Scholar were used to search for relevant ar

Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRVB) has been widely used to improve cardiovascular health and well-being. HRVB is based on breathing at an individual's resonance frequency, which stimulates respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and the baroreflex. There is, however, no methodological consensus on how to apply HRVB, while details about the protocol used are often not well reported. Thus, the objectives of this systematic review are to describe the different HRVB protocols and detect methodological concerns. PsycINFO, CINALH, Medline and Web of Science were searched between 2000 and April 202
