A synergistic gas-liquid separator based on bionic structure and electric field for efficient separation and sensitive detection.

The core of underwater energy detection and leak warning lies in accurately detecting dissolved gases, reliable gas analysis requires high-quality gas sampling. Although breakthroughs have been made in existing gas sensing technologies, the mass transfer barrier of gas-liquid two-phase separation still severely restricts its underwater applications. Therefore, this study proposes a passive bionic and active electric field collaborative enhanced gas-liquid separation strategy: the passive unit draws inspiration from the bionic protrusion structure of gas exchange in starfish gills, with an arra

Low-damage mechanised harvesting of shallots: from biomechanical interaction mechanisms to bionic and flexible design strategies.

With the rapid expansion of the shallot industrial scale, the high costs and low efficiency associated with traditional manual harvesting have emerged as core bottlenecks restricting the sustainable development of the industry. When deployed in shallot fields, existing general-purpose root-crop harvesting equipment encounters a typical engineering mechanics contradiction: the "high pull-out resistance of deep root systems" versus the "high vulnerability of tender pseudostems". Consequently, achieving efficient, intact, and non-destructive harvesting remains challenging. To address the technica

Influence of bionic footwear on lower limb biomechanics across running experience levels: a controlled laboratory study.

INTRODUCTION: While the biomechanics of lower extremity during running and the impact of conventional running shoes on these traits have been extensively investigated, the influence of bionic shoes on runners remains largely, especially those runners with different experience levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical differences between experienced and novice runners when wearing two distinct types of footwear: bionic shoes and neutral shoes. METHODS: Fourteen healthy male heel-strike runners participated and completed the running test wearing two pairs of running shoes

Modeling and design of 3D printed hyperelastic lattice metamaterials with bionic S-shaped stress-strain behaviors.

Lattice metamaterials made of stiff polymers, ceramics, and metals have been extensively designed to reproduce the mechanical behaviors of biological tissues, holding promising applications in biomedical devices and tissue engineering. However, lattice metamaterials composed of soft materials have been far less explored due to challenges posed by material nonlinearity and large deformations. Here, hyperelastic lattice metamaterials with curved microstructures are fabricated by 3D printing elastomers and are developed to mimic bionic S-shaped stress-strain behaviors. We propose a design framewo

Lesion-Adaptative Bionic Tracheal Stent with Local Paclitaxel Release for Enhanced Therapy of Tracheal Tumor and Stenosis.

The efficacy of tracheal stents (TSs) in treating malignant tracheal stenosis is often compromised by tumor overgrowth, leading to restenosis and other stent-related complications that conventional chemotherapy and commercial stents fail to adequately address. Drug-loaded tracheal stents have the potential to deliver chemotherapeutics directly to tumors while relieving stenosis, but their effectiveness has yet to be studied in vivo. The design of drug-loaded tracheal stents adapting to lesions to achieve optimal antitumor effects and minimal side effects remains an area worth exploring. In thi

Evaluation of a Portable Bionic Ankle Prosthesis Under Direct Continuous Electromyography Control for Quiet Standing Tasks.

INTRODUCTION: Postural control and balance are necessary for activities of daily living. Passive prostheses that reduce ankle dorsiflexion/plantarflexion control can require different balance strategies compared with able-bodied individuals. Powered prostheses may restore ankle joint control and improve balance compared with passive prostheses. Muscle activity as the prosthetic control input leverages the human neural control system to directly modulate prosthetic dynamics. This study evaluates continuous myoelectric control during quiet standing tasks with an untethered electromechanically ac

Simulation and Structural Analysis of a Flexible Coupling Bionic Desorption Mechanism Based on the Engineering Discrete Element Method.

Soil adhesion is one of the important factors affecting the working stability and quality of agricultural machinery. The application of bionic non-smooth surfaces provides a novel idea for soil anti-adhesion. The parameters of sandy loam with 21% moisture content were calibrated by the Engineering Discrete Element Method (EDEM). The final simulated soil repose angle was highly consistent with the measured soil repose angle, and the obtained regression equation of the soil repose angle provides a numerical reference for the parameter calibration of different soils. By simulating the sinusoidal

Adaptable Poly-Articulated Bionic Hands EnhanceBoth Performance and User's Perception in Bilateral Amputation: A Case Study.

This article evaluates and compares the performance and perception of prosthetic devices based on different design principles, a traditional rigid gripper and an adaptable poly-articulated hand, in a pre- and post-training protocol with an individual with bilateral amputation. As a representative of the first class, we use commercial hands (Ottobock's MyoHand VariPlus Speed), which is a widely adopted model by prosthesis users worldwide. We compare these with two SoftHand Pro hands, which are experimental prototypes exhibiting 19 articulations actuated by one single motor, and are inspired by

Deep-Learning to Map a Benchmark Dataset of Non-amputee Ambulation for Controlling an Open Source Bionic Leg.

Powered lower-limb prosthetic devices may be becoming a promising option for amputation patients. Although various methods have been proposed to produce gait trajectories similar to those of non-disabled individuals, implementing these control methods is still challenging. It remains unclear whether these methods provide appropriate, safe, and intuitive locomotion as intended. This paper proposes the direct mapping of the voluntary movement of a residual limb (i.e., thigh) to the desired impedance parameters for amputated limbs (i.e., knee and ankle). The proposed model was learned from the ga

Albumin-Coated Framework Nucleic Acids as Bionic Delivery System for Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Therapy.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a subtype of breast cancer, and it has aggressive and more frequent tissue metastases than other breast cancer subtypes. Because the proliferation of TNBC tumor cells does not depend on estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and Erb-B2 receptor tyrosine kinase 2 (HER2) and lacks accurate drug targets, conventional chemotherapy is challenging to be effective, and adverse reactions are severe. At present, the treatment strategy for TNBC generally depends on a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Conventional administration m

Bionic Upper Limb Reconstruction: A Valuable Alternative in Global Brachial Plexus Avulsion Injuries-A Case Series.

Global brachial plexopathies including multiple nerve root avulsions may result in complete upper limb paralysis despite surgical treatment. Bionic reconstruction, which includes the elective amputation of the functionless hand and its replacement with a mechatronic device, has been described for the transradial level. Here, we present for the first time that patients with global brachial plexus avulsion injuries and lack of biological shoulder and elbow function benefit from above-elbow amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation. Between 2012 and 2017, forty-five patients with global brachial p

Elective amputation and bionic substitution restore functional hand use after critical soft tissue injuries.

Critical soft tissue injuries may lead to a non-functional and insensate limb. In these cases standard reconstructive techniques will not suffice to provide a useful outcome, and solutions outside the biological arena must be considered and offered to these patients. We propose a concept which, after all reconstructive options have been exhausted, involves an elective amputation along with a bionic substitution, implementing an actuated prosthetic hand via a structured tech-neuro-rehabilitation program. Here, three patients are presented in whom this concept has been successfully applied after

Bionic reconstruction to restore hand function after brachial plexus injury: a case series of three patients.

BACKGROUND: Brachial plexus injuries can permanently impair hand function, yet present surgical reconstruction provides only poor results. Here, we present for the first time bionic reconstruction; a combined technique of selective nerve and muscle transfers, elective amputation, and prosthetic rehabilitation to regain hand function. METHODS: Between April 2011, and May 2014, three patients with global brachial plexus injury including lower root avulsions underwent bionic reconstruction. Treatment occurred in two stages; first, to identify and create useful electromyographic signals for prost

Noninvasive transcutaneous bionic baroreflex system prevents severe orthostatic hypotension in patients with spinal cord injury.

Central baroreflex failure in patients with spinal cord injury results in serious orthostatic hypotension. We examined if transcutaneous electrical stimulation regulates arterial pressure in those patients. We identified skin regions capable of increasing arterial pressure and determined respective transfer function. Using the transfer function, we designed the feedback regulator (i.e., bionic baroreflex system) to control arterial pressure. Orthostatic stress decreased arterial pressure profoundly. Activation of bionic regulator restored and maintained arterial pressure at pre-specified level

Bionic nanocoating-mediated near-infrared persistent luminescence photodynamic system for the treatment of periprosthetic joint infection.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a catastrophic complication of arthroplasty, notoriously difficult to treat due to bacterial biofilms and escalating antibiotic resistance. To address this, we designed a smart, biomimetic photodynamic coating (PL-PS@Ti) for titanium implants, utilizing near-infrared persistent luminescence nanoparticles (NLPLNPs) to achieve deep-tissue, on-demand antibacterial and osteogenic efficacy. We synthesized chromium/europium-doped zinc gallate NLPLNPs coated with dendritic mesoporous silica and conjugated with a silicon phthalocyanine photosensitizer (ZGO NP@DM
