We studied the effect of bisphenol A orally administrated to female rats on sexual behavior of their offspring. The males of the experimental group demonstrated significantly decreased number of approaches to a partition separating them from a receptive female; the copulatory rate during direct interaction with the female was also reduced. In females of the experimental group, the lordosis quotient and lordosis intensity were decreased. The revealed changes indicate that bisphenol A intoxication of female rats leads to significant disturbance of sexual behavior in their offspring of both sexes

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder characterized by anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovarian morphology. Its etiology is uncertain and one of the hypotheses is that environmental factors, such as the bisphenol A (BPA) endocrine disruptor, may be involved.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between exposure to BPA and PCOS.
SEARCH STRATEGY: Research was conducted focusing on studies published in English, Portuguese, and Spanish from January 2001 to March 2023 and available in Embase, Medline/PubMed, Rima, Lilacs, Scielo, Google academic,

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Obesity and its associated metabolic diseases are increasing globally. Sedentary lifestyle, high caloric diet, and genetic predisposition are known to contribute to the onset of obesity. It is increasingly recognized that exposure to environmental chemicals such as Bisphenol A (BPA) may also play a significant role. BPA has been correlated with an array of adverse health effects, including obesity and metabolic disorders. Due to public concern, manufacturers are replacing BPA with structural analogues for which there is limited toxicological data. The objective of this s

Japanese medaka is specified as a model fish in the test guidelines of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Recently, populations of Japanese medaka in Japan were divided into two species, the northern Oryzias sakaizumii and the southern O. latipes. Previously, we reported that induction concentrations for sex reversal by exposure to 17α-methyltestosterone differed significantly between these two species, indicating that they respond differently to endocrine-disrupting chemica. In the present study, we examined the effects of exposure to two more endocrine-disrupting che

Humans interfere with a variety of endocrine disruptors on a daily basis, which may result in adverse health effects. Among them, Bisphenol-A (BPA) is the most debated endocrine disruptor, despite being widely studied, regarding its effects on fertility. The aim of this review was to investigate the interrelation of BPA and female fertility. PubMed (Medline) was searched from 2013 until 2022 to identify epidemiological studies that report the association of BPA with fertility parameters, in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis. Regarding gene

The occurrence and spatial distribution of bisphenol A (BPA) and analogues bisphenol B (BPB), bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) were investigated in microplastic on 11 beaches in Hong Kong. At 10 sites, BPA was the only detected chemical with concentrations ranged from 82.4-989 ng g-1 microplastic. BPA, BPB and BPS co-occurred at only one site, where it is located close proximity to the outfall of a sewage treatment plant. There was no significant spatial difference of BPA concentrations in microplastic when all the sites were considered, indicating that some remote and presumably cleane

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous substances that are able to interfere with hormone action, likely contributing to the development of several endocrine and metabolic diseases. Among them, Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates contaminate food and water and have been largely studied as obesogenic agents. They might contribute to weight gain, insulin resistance and pancreatic β-cell dysfunction in pregnancy, potentially playing a role in the development of pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and adverse outcomes. Pregnancy and childhood are sensiti

Male fertility is linked with several well-orchestrated events including spermatogenesis, epididymal maturation, capacitation, the acrosome reaction, fertilization, and beyond. However, the detrimental effects of bisphenol A (BPA) on sperm maturation compared to spermatogenesis and sperm cells remain unclear. Therefore, this study was to investigate whether pubertal exposure to BPA induces male infertility via interruption of the immune response in the epididymis. CD-1 male mice (5 weeks old) were treated daily with vehicle (corn oil) and 50 mg BPA/kg-BW for 6 weeks by oral gavage. Following B

Endocrine disruptors have been proposed in the etiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as they have the potency to interfere with hormone-sensitivity systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of bisphenol A (BPA) and phtalates in adolescents with PCOS. Sixty-two girls with PCOS and 33 controls, age 12-18 years were enrolled in the study. The diagnosis of PCOS was made using modified Rotterdam criteria. Urinary BPA levels were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography. Di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP), the most commonly used phthalate and mono-(2-ethylhexyl)-p

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor which can bind to the oestrogen receptor. It also possesses oestrogenic, antiandrogenic, inflammatory and oxidative properties. Since bone responds to changes in sex hormones, inflammatory and oxidative status, BPA exposure could influence bone health in humans. This review aimed to summarize the current evidence on the relationship between BPA and bone health derived from cellular, animal and human studies. Exposure to BPA (0.5-12.5 µM) decreased the proliferation of osteoblast and osteoclast precursor cells and induce their apoptosis. Bisphenol AF

After menopause, when estrogen levels decrease, there is room for the activity of anthropogenic substances with estrogenic properties - endocrine disruptors (EDs) - that can interfere with bone remodeling and changes in calcium-phosphate metabolism. Selected unconjugated EDs of the bisphenol group - BPA, BPS, BPF, BPAF, and the paraben family - methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-, and benzyl-parabens - were measured by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in the plasma of 24 postmenopausal women. Parameters of calcium-phosphate metabolism and bone mineral density were a

Many scientific studies have revealed a trend towards an earlier onset of puberty and have disclosed an increasing number of children that display precocious puberty. As an explanation, some authors have considered the global socio-economic improvement across different populations, and other authors have considered the action of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Among these, bisphenol A (BPA), an aromatic compound largely used worldwide as a precursor of some plastics and chemical additives, is well known for its molecular oestrogen-like and obesogenic actions. We reviewed the medical lit

Due to the prevalent use of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins in packaging materials and paints for ships, there has been a widespread global contamination of environmental water sources with bisphenol A (BPA). BPA, an endocrine disruptor, has been found to cause tremendous health problems. Therefore, there is an urgent need for detecting BPA in a convenient and sensitive manner to ensure water safety. Herein, we develop a fluorescent turn-on BPA probe, named Bisphenol Orange (BPO), which could conveniently detect BPA in a wide variety of real water samples including sea water, drain wat

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor with widespread human exposure. The effect of in utero BPA exposure on human offspring remains largely unknown.
METHODS: Anogenital distance (AGD) of sons of workers who did or did not have occupational BPA exposure during pregnancy were compared in an occupational cohort study. Parental BPA exposure level during the index pregnancy was estimated through a job-exposure matrix based on personal air sampling measurement. Maternal exposure was considered direct in utero exposure to the fetus, whereas paternal exposure was considered indirec

Aged women have a higher risk of osteoarthritis (OA) due to estrogen (E2) loss at menopause. Studies suggested that E2 inhibits nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB activity which is increased in arthritis pathogenesis. Other studies revealed that external E2 reduces the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in osteoarthritic chondrocytes, and attenuates the pathogenesis of OA. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an important industrial material, and an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) that binds E2 receptors and interrupts the hormone signaling. It is unknown how BPA affects E2 functions and influences E2

The link between endocrine disruptors and altered blood glucose homeostasis has been recently suggested. Epidemiological studies have correlated levels of phthalates, dioxins and persistent organic pollutants with alterations of blood glucose homeostasis in humans. Environmentally relevant doses of the ubiquitous endocrine disruptor bisphenol-A (BPA) have profound effects on mice endocrine pancreas--an essential tissue involved in glucose metabolism. BPA exerts rapid non-genomic effects on insulin releasing beta-cells and glucagon releasing alpha-cells within freshly isolated islets of Langerh

Bisphenol A has been shown to affect the reproduction of male rats and mice. However, the mechanism of action of bisphenol A on the epididymal sperm is not elucidated. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of bisphenol A on the antioxidant system of rat epididymal sperm. Bisphenol A was administered orally to male rats at the dose levels of 0.2, 2 and 20 microg/Kg body weight per day for 45 days. After 24 h of the last treatment, rats were weighed and killed using anesthetic ether. The body weight of treated rats did not show significant change as compared with the correspond
