Ideal Body Weight Ratio for Donor-to-Recipient Size Matching in Heart Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: While various models are useful for donor-recipient size matching, the optimal approach for predicting the correct match remains unclear. We sought to determine the association between ideal body weight (IBW) ratio and post-transplant survival. METHODS: The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database was queried for all patients who underwent isolated heart transplantation between July 2000 and July 2023. Donor-recipient size matching was assessed using predicted heart mass (PHM), ideal predicted heart mass (IPHM), and IBW. Ratios were stratified as undersized (≤0.8), properl

Z Scores for Pediatric Echocardiography Dimensions Adjusted for Body Size, BMI, and Age.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular dimensions measured during pediatric echocardiograms must be normalized for body size. However, other variables may confound their interpretation, such as age and abnormal body habitus. This retrospective cross-sectional study of the Canadian Congenital and Pediatric Cardiology Research Network aimed to create Z score equations for commonly measured dimensions in pediatric 2-dimensional echocardiography that were free of residual confounding effects of body size, body mass index, and age. METHODS: The reference sample consisted of >20 000 children without heart dise

Failure of Tricuspid Annuloplasty for Functional Tricuspid Regurgitation: Impact of Patient's Body Size.

Tricuspid repair is recommended for significant functional tricuspid regurgitation (FTR) or tricuspid annulus (TA) dilation, based on TA >40 mm or >21 mm/m². The concordance between both TA dimensions related to the patient's body size has not been investigated. Patients who underwent rigid ring tricuspid annuloplasty for FTR between 2009 and 2017 were included. Assuming equality between both TA diameter criteria, patients were divided per body surface area (BSA): group 1 = BSA ≤1.9 m² and group 2 = BSA >1.9 m². The primary outcome was TR recurrence at 5 years. Tricuspid annuloplasty was perfo

Manatee calf call contour and acoustic structure varies by species and body size.

Vocal activity and signal characteristics of mammals are driven by several factors that result in both stability and plasticity over multiple time scales. All three extant species of manatee communicate with several calls that are especially important for maintaining contact between cows and calves. Determining if calf calls differ across manatee species will provide insights into the evolution of species-specific acoustic communication traits. We investigated the interspecific differences in the vocalizations of calves of Amazonian manatees (Trichechus inunguis) and the two subspecies of the

The island rule explains consistent patterns of body size evolution in terrestrial vertebrates.

Island faunas can be characterized by gigantism in small animals and dwarfism in large animals, but the extent to which this so-called 'island rule' provides a general explanation for evolutionary trajectories on islands remains contentious. Here we use a phylogenetic meta-analysis to assess patterns and drivers of body size evolution across a global sample of paired island-mainland populations of terrestrial vertebrates. We show that 'island rule' effects are widespread in mammals, birds and reptiles, but less evident in amphibians, which mostly tend towards gigantism. We also found that the

Reduced body size of insular black-tailed deer is caused by slowed development.

Adult body size correlates strongly with fitness, but mean body sizes frequently differ among conspecific populations. Ultimate, fitness-based explanations for these deviations in animals typically focus on community-level or physiological processes (e.g., competition, thermoregulation). However, proximate mechanisms underlying adaptive body size adjustments remain poorly understood. Adjustments in adult body size may result from shifts in growth-related life-history traits, such as the length of time to achieve adult body size (i.e., growth period) and how quickly the body increases in size (

Measurement of Skeletal Muscle Area Improves Estimation of Aminoglycoside Clearance across Body Size.

A consistent approach to the dosing of aminoglycosides across the modern body size distribution has been elusive. We evaluated whether radiologically derived measures of body composition could explain more of the interpatient variability in aminoglycoside pharmacokinetics (PK) than standard body size metrics. This retrospective study included adult patients treated with gentamicin or tobramycin with at least three drug concentrations and computed tomography (CT) imaging available. Aminoglycoside volume and clearance (CL) estimates were computed using a two-compartment model by Bayesian analysi

Neonatal Arterial Morphology Is Related to Body Size in Abnormal Human Fetal Growth.

BACKGROUND: Restriction in fetal growth is associated with cardiovascular disease in adulthood. It is unclear whether abnormal intrauterine growth influences arterial morphology during the fetal or neonatal stage. The objective was to study the regional arterial morphology with respect to gestational age and abnormal fetal body size. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied body anthropometrics and arterial morphology and physiology in 174 neonates born between 31 and 42 weeks of gestation, including neonates with birth weights appropriate, small, and large for age, with very high resolution vascular

Body size and walking cadence affect lower extremity joint power in children's gait.

Obese children move less and with greater difficulty than normal-weight counterparts but expend comparable energy. Increased metabolic costs have been attributed to poor biomechanics but few studies have investigated the influence of obesity on mechanical demands of gait. This study sought to assess three-dimensional lower extremity joint powers in two walking cadences in 28 obese and normal-weight children. 3D-motion analysis was conducted for five trials of barefoot walking at self-selected and 30% greater than self-selected cadences. Mechanical power was calculated at the hip, knee, and ank

Genetic variation in body size, composition, temperature, and feed intake in mature chickens.

Genetic variation for more than 40 traits was assessed in 26 stocks of mature chickens reared together and fed ad libitum from hatching to slaughter at 507 days of age. There was greater genetic variation among males than among females. The intraclass correlation, t, was high (greater than .75) for measures of size and weight and moderate (.20 to .60) for most other traits (P less than .05) including a measure of lean distribution (.37). Three main categories of stocks were studied, viz. outbred Leghorns, medium-sized stocks, and contemporary heavy meat chickens. Differences in lean distributi

Static allometry of a small-bodied omnivore: body size and limb scaling of an island fox and inferences for Homo floresiensis.

Island dwarfing is a paraphyletic adaptation across numerous mammalian genera. From mammoths to foxes, extreme body size reduction is shared by diverse organisms that migrate to an island environment. Because it largely occurs owing to ecological variables, not phylogenetic ones, skeletal characters in a dwarfed taxon compared with its ancestor may appear abnormal. As a result, allometric patterns between body size and morphological traits may differ for an island dwarf compared with its ancestor. The diminutive Late Pleistocene hominin, Homo floresiensis, displays a unique character suite tha

From avatars to body swapping: The use of virtual reality for assessing and treating body-size distortion in individuals with anorexia.

In the last 30 years, virtual reality (VR) has offered innovative solutions for assessing and treating body representation disturbances in anorexia nervosa (AN). The most recent and innovative trend is the exploitation of the so-called VR-based body swapping illusion. The aim of this case study was to report the use of this VR protocol within a multidisciplinary treatment of AN. A patient with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5 diagnosis of AN underwent an intensive multidisciplinary outpatient treatment. Three sessions of a VR-based body swapping illusion (i.e., the experimental induction

The impact of lesion size on outcomes following stereotactic body radiotherapy for spinal metastases.

OBJECTIVE: Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for metastatic spinal disease provides effective local control (LC). However, there are limited data evaluating how the pretreatment volume or number of affected vertebral levels impacts treatment effect. Therefore, this study compared the efficacy of spine SBRT treatment on LC, distant progression (DP), and overall survival (OS) between patients with limited spinal disease (≤ 2 vertebral segments or < 50 cm3 pretreatment volume) to those with more widespread spine metastases. METHODS: All patients with metastatic spinal disease treated with SB

Influence of agility training on body-size and object solidity perception in pet dogs.

Several studies suggest that dogs are a suitable model to study body-awareness in a systematic and ecologically relevant manner. However, previous studies used a single door paradigm, which does not allow for the control of motivation and thus may yield false positive results. Moreover, it is unclear how life experience might influence body-awareness. In this study, we tested self body-size and -shape as well as object solidity perception in pet dogs and agility trained dogs in a two-choice paradigm. The subjects had to walk through one of the two openings in a fence to reach a reward. The ope

Scaling contact force parameters across body size, limb count, and number of contact spheres.

Dynamic simulations of contact interactions involve a trade-off between realism and numerical performance. Contact interactions in musculoskeletal simulations are often modelled using Hertz theory applied to contact spheres, with Hunt-Crossley based dissipation. Suitable contact parameters are highly dependent on the morphology, scale, materials, and movement in question. Inappropriate parameter choices can manifest in unpredictable ways, potentially resulting in misinterpretations or failed simulations. Here, I demonstrate that the plane strain modulus and dissipation parameters are not scale
