The range of thermal insulaton in the tissues of the new-born baby.

1. Rectal temperature and skin temperatures were measured in twenty-eight naked babies weighing 1.1-4.5 kg, lying supine in environments of 25-31 degrees C when air speed was 4-7 cm/sec. The ratio of external insulation to internal or tissue insulation for the whole body averaged 2.7 but varied inversely with body weight; the ratio was higher than this on the trunk, and five times lower than this on the hand and foot. The mean ratio rose threefold when environmental temperature was increased to 34-35 degrees C.2. Direct measurements of heat flow from the back of a hand placed in a water jacket

An orexinergic projection from perifornical hypothalamus to raphe pallidus increases rat brown adipose tissue thermogenesis.

Orexin (hypocretin) neurons, located exclusively in the PeF-LH, which includes the perifornical area (PeF), the lateral hypothalamus (LH), and lateral portions of the medial hypothalamus, have widespread projections and influence many physiological functions, including the autonomic regulation of body temperature and energy metabolism. Narcolepsy is characterized by the loss of orexin neurons and by disrupted sleep, but also by dysregulation of body temperature and by a strong tendency for obesity. Heat production (thermogenesis) in brown adipose tissue (BAT) contributes to the maintenance of

Immune regulation by hypothermia: from triggers and mechanisms to therapeutic applications.

Although homeotherms maintain a stable core body temperature through the coordinated regulation of multiple physiological systems, various factors can still lead to abnormal body temperature. While the immune-enhancing effects of fever are well understood, research on how low body temperature regulates immunity remains limited. Notably, cold therapy and hypothermia have been used to manage various diseases, including neurological and metabolic disorders. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the causes of hypothermia, its modulatory effects on immunity and underlying mechanisms, and

Evolved increases in running performance in cold hypoxia in high-altitude deer mice.

The cold and hypoxic conditions at high altitude can challenge the ability of small endotherms to meet the high energy demands of locomotion and thermoregulation. We examined how high-altitude natives overcome this challenge through plastic and/or evolved improvements in locomotory performance. Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) native to high and low altitude were born and raised in captivity, then acclimated to warm normoxia or cold hypoxia as adults. Running endurance was then measured in both warm normoxia and cold hypoxia across groups. Among mice acclimated to warm normoxia, endurance wa

Prenatal stress improves the ability of neonatal lambs to maintain body surface temperature during periods of cold exposure.

Exposure to cold and hypothermia is a significant threat to newborn lamb survival in extensive systems, and the ability to thermoregulate is essential for improved survivability. Lambs exhibit enhanced thermogenic abilities and increased brown fat deposition when ewes experience cold during late-pregnancy. This study evaluated the effects of various prenatal stressors on newborn lamb thermogenesis through three experiments. Experiment 1 examined the impact of mid-pregnancy shearing and wetting on lamb thermogenesis. Experiment 2 involved transporting and cold-exposing late-pregnancy ewes. Expe

The effect of heat acclimation on critical environmental limits and rate of rectal temperature change.

Quantifying the effect of heat acclimation (HA) on critical wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGTcrit) and rate of rectal temperature change (vTre) is relevant for developing guidelines with regards to occupational safety while working in warm environments. This study quantified the effect of HA and the period following cessation of the HA protocol on WBGTcrit and vTre. Twenty-eight non-acclimatized participants were divided into a HA (n = 15) and control (CON; n = 13) group. The HA group underwent a warm-humid (35°C, 65% relative humidity) controlled hyperthermia HA protocol (5-9 days of achieving

Beetling the heat - the diurnal Namib Desert beetle Onymacris plana cools by running.

Onymacris plana (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is a black beetle that runs at high speed for a pedestrian insect in direct solar radiation in the Namib Desert, a behaviour expected to impose potentially lethal body temperature within minutes. We measured the body temperature of beetles active in their natural habitat using fine thermocouples inserted into the prothorax. The measurements revealed that when beetles sprinted in conditions of low wind, high radiation and moderate ambient temperature, their body temperature dropped rather than rose. The effect depended on convective cooling and effici

Determining cold strain in cold air: a comparison of two methods of partitional calorimetry to calculate heat storage and debt in cold air with mild hypothermia.

We compared two methods of partitional calorimetry to calculate heat storage and heat debt during cold air (0°C) exposure causing mild core cooling. Twelve participants performed a 5 min baseline in thermoneutral conditions (∼22.0°C, ∼50% relative humidity) followed by cold air exposure (∼0°C) until rectal temperature was reduced by ∆-0.5°C. Partitional calorimetry was used to calculate avenues of heat exchange (radiative, convective, and evaporative), heat storage, and heat debt continuously throughout cold exposure. We compared deriving these variables using prediction equations based on env

The nasal cavity of the bearded seal: An effective and robust organ for retaining body heat and water.

We report the effects of varying physiological and other properties on the heat and water exchange in the maxilloturbinate structure (MT) of the bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus or Eb) in realistic environments, using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. We find that the water retention in percent is very high (about 90 %) and relatively unaffected by either cold (-30 °C) or warm (10 °C) conditions. The retention of heat is also high, around 80 % . Based on a consideration of entropy production by the maxilloturbinate system, we show that anatomical and physiological properties of the

A 3-D virtual human model for simulating heat and cold stress.

In this study, we extended our previously developed anatomically detailed three-dimensional (3-D) thermoregulatory virtual human model for predicting heat stress to allow for predictions of heat and cold stress in one unified model. Starting with the modified Pennes bioheat transfer equation to estimate the spatiotemporal temperature distribution within the body as the underlying modeling structure, we developed a new formulation to characterize the spatial variation of blood temperature between body elements and within the limbs. We also implemented the means to represent heat generated from

Measurement of human body surface heat flux using a calorimetric sensor.

We have developed a calorimetric sensor that can perform local measurements of the heat flux transmitted by conduction between a human body and thermostat located inside the sensor. The sensor has a detection area of 2 × 2 cm2 and, in its current configuration, facilitates measurement with a resolution of 10 mW. In this paper, measurements of two healthy male subjects of different ages (24 and 60 years) are presented. We study the variation in the power dissipated by the human body surface as a function of time for a thermostat temperature of 28 °C. We also study the same power with thermostat

Disorders of temperature regulation: prehospital implications.

Humans are warm-blooded mammals and must maintain a constant internal temperature. Body temperature is controlled by the hypothalamus in the brain, with input from sensory receptors throughout the body. At any given time, body temperature is a function of heat production and heat loss. Temperature-regulation problems can result in several conditions. These include fever, hyperthermia and hypothermia. EMTs and paramedics must be familiar with the physiological and pathophysiological processes resulting from these disorders. By close observation of the patient, it should be fairly easy to determ

Primate preoptic neurons drive hypothermia and cold defense.

Maintaining body temperature within a narrow range is vital for warm-blooded animals. In rodents, the preoptic area (POA) of the hypothalamus detects and regulates core body temperature. However, knowledge about the thermal regulation center in primates remains limited. Here, we show that activating a subpopulation of POA neurons by a chemogenetic strategy reliably induces hypothermia in anesthetized and freely moving macaques. Comprehensive monitoring of physiological parameters reveals that such hypothermia is accompanied by autonomic changes including a rise in heart rate, skeletal muscle a

Temperature-dependent skin disorders.

The skin is important in preserving homeostasis between man and his environment. One main role of the skin is in thermoregulation, where cutaneous blood flow, and hence skin temperature, vary widely in order to help preserve core body temperature. Under extreme conditions, frostbite or burns may occur. Prolonged exposure to moderate degrees of heat or cold can result in erythema ab igne and chilblains. Temperature plays a direct role in some of the physical urticarias and is one of several important pathogenic factors in conditions such as Raynaud's syndrome, cold panniculitis, and cryoglobuli

Enhancing physiological recovery and subsequent exercise performance in the heat using a phase-change material cooling blanket.

This study aimed to assess the effect of a phase-change material (PCM) cooling blanket for cooling between exercise bouts on recovery of physiological parameters and subsequent exercise performance in the heat. Eighteen male volunteers were recruited to participate in human trials involving two exhaustive treadmill running bouts (Bout1 for 3 km and Bout2 for 1.5 km) in a climate chamber (temperature = 33 °C; relative humidity = 40%). Participants were randomly subjected to one of two cooling conditions for a 10-min period between exercise bouts: CON: natural cooling; 10-min PCM: with a PCM coo

Effects of fan cooling with an air-perfused rucksack on physiological and perceptual strains in young men while running in uncompensable hot environment.

BACKGROUND: Cooling devices reduce thermal strain during pre-, between-, and postexercise. However, their efficacy during moderate/intensity runs in hot conditions with airflow equivalent to the running speed remains unclear. This study assessed physiological and perceptual responses to neck and upper back fan-cooling through an air-perfused rucksack under such conditions. METHODS: Ten young men ran at 60% V̇O<inf>2peak</inf> for 30 min in 35 °C, 50% relative humidity with (FAN) and without (CON) air-perfused rucksacks with a hood in a randomized order. Headwind equal to running speed was pro
