Prevalence of oncogenic human papillomavirus genotypes in patients diagnosed with anogenital malignancies in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) associated malignancies are the leading cause of cancer death in Botswana. We sought to determine causative HPV types in patients with anogenital malignancies in Botswana to inform vaccine strategy. METHODS: We used formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks from patients diagnosed with anal, penile and vulvar squamous cell carcinomas between the years, 2014 and 2016. Presence of HPV 16, 18, or other high-risk (HR) types was detected using Abbott m2000 real-time PCR platform. Tissues with other high-risk types were subsequently analysed us

Evaluation of a well-established task-shifting initiative: the lay counselor cadre in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Evidence supports the implementation of task shifting to address health worker shortages that are common in resource-limited settings. However, there is need to learn from established programs to identify ways to achieve the strongest, most sustainable impact. This study examined the Botswana lay counselor cadre, a task shifting initiative, to explore effectiveness and contribution to the health workforce. METHODS: This evaluation used multiple methods, including a desk review, a national lay counselor survey (n = 385; response = 94%), in-depth interviews (n = 79), lay counselors

Induced sputum improves the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in hospitalized patients in Gaborone, Botswana.

SETTING: Low sensitivity of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) sputum smears and absence of productive cough are obstacles to the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in hospitals that lack access to bronchoscopy. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate induced sputum, gastric content, blood and urine specimens to improve PTB diagnosis in patients not diagnosed by expectorated sputum AFB smears. DESIGN: Patients admitted to the medical wards of a large public hospital in Gaborone, Botswana, were prospectively enrolled if they had symptoms consistent with PTB, an abnormal chest radiograph, were treated empirically

Value of chest radiography in a tuberculosis prevention programme for HIV-infected people, Botswana.

To exclude tuberculosis, WHO/UNAIDS recommends considering medical history, symptom screen, and chest radiograph before starting tuberculosis prevention in people infected with HIV. The value of a chest radiograph for this purpose is unknown. We prospectively assessed 935 HIV-infected outpatients seeking isoniazid preventive therapy. Of 935 patients, 692 (74%) had no signs or symptoms of tuberculosis. Of these 692, 123 (18%) were lost during the chest radiograph process, and one (0.2%) of the remaining 563 was diagnosed with tuberculosis on the basis of the chest radiograph. A screening chest

A retrospective study of the cancer patterns among hospital in-patients in Botswana 1960-72.

Records of approximately 310,000 patients admitted to the 10 hospitals in Botswana between 1960 and 1972 have been studied and details of 1445 patients with malignant tumours abstracted. For the 894 tumours for which there was some supporting evidence--at best histological proof and minimally a clinical description of symptoms--proportional frequencies have been calculated for all sites and comparison made with the findings of other surveys. Cancer of the cervix uteri is overwhelmingly the most commonly occurring malignant tumour and the proportional frequency is among the highest observed in

Population-Based Geospatial and Molecular Epidemiologic Study of Tuberculosis Transmission Dynamics, Botswana, 2012-2016.

Tuberculosis (TB) elimination requires interrupting transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We used a multidisciplinary approach to describe TB transmission in 2 sociodemographically distinct districts in Botswana (Kopanyo Study). During August 2012-March 2016, all patients who had TB were enrolled, their sputum samples were cultured, and M. tuberculosis isolates were genotyped by using 24-locus mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units-variable number of tandem repeats. Of 5,515 TB patients, 4,331 (79%) were enrolled. Annualized TB incidence varied by geography (range 66-1,140 TB patien

Mid-trimester cervical length not associated with HIV status among pregnant women in Botswana.

OBJECTIVE: HIV-infected women on antiretroviral therapy have a higher risk of preterm birth than HIV-uninfected women in Botswana. To better understand the mechanism for preterm birth among HIV-infected women, we evaluated whether mid-trimester cervical length differed by HIV status as cervical shortening is associated with an increased risk for preterm birth. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study among pregnant women receiving care at the Scottish Livingstone Hospital in Molepolole, Botswana. Consecutive women referred for routine obstetrical ultrasound were consented and enrolled

Human immunodeficiency virus-associated tuberculosis care in Botswana: evidence from a real-world setting.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is among the world's top public health challenges and the leading killer of people with HIV, yet is a treatable disease. This study aimed to assess, in a real-world setting, the implementation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and Cotrimoxazole preventive therapy (CPT) policy, specific interventions proven to benefit patients in HIV-associated TB care. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in Botswana in the Serowe/Palapye district, a largely urban district with a high burden of HIV-associated TB with a high case fatality, at Segkoma and Palapye ho

Staphylococcus aureus nasal colonization among HIV-infected adults in Botswana: prevalence and risk factors.

We sought to determine the clinical and epidemiologic determinants of Staphylococcus aureus nasal colonization in HIV-infected individuals at two outpatient centers in southern Botswana. Standard microbiologic techniques were used to identify S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). In a sample of 404 HIV-infected adults, prevalence of S. aureus nasal carriage was 36.9% (n = 152) and was associated with domestic overcrowding and lower CD4 cell count. MRSA prevalence was low (n = 13, 3.2%), but more common among individuals with asthma and eczema. The implications of these findings

Normal intestinal flora of wild Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.

Bacterial and fungal cultures were performed from cloacal swabs collected from 29 wild Nile crocodiles, captured in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. Sixteen species of bacteria and 6 fungal species were cultured. Individual crocodiles yielded 1-4 bacterial species, and 0-2 fungal species. The most commonly isolated bacteria were Microbacterium, Enterococcus faecalis, Aeromonas hydrophila, and Escherichia coli. No salmonellae were cultured. The most commonly occurring fungus was Cladosporium. Several of the bacterial and fungal species isolated have been implicated in cases of septicaemia in croco

General health status of residents of the Selebi Phikwe Ni-Cu mine area, Botswana.

Residents of the Selebi Phikwe area, Botswana where nickel-copper (Ni-Cu) is being exploited often exhibit symptoms of varied degrees of ailments, sicknesses and diseases. A need to investigate their general health status was therefore eminent. Primary data was obtained by means of a questionnaire and structured interviews conducted with individuals, health service providers, business enterprises and educational Institutions. The generated data revealed common ailments, sicknesses and diseases in the area with the four most frequent health complaints being frequent coughing headaches, influenz

Co-production of a National Botswana Tobacco Control Resource Center through Community Engagement Studio.

Tobacco use causes over 8 million deaths annually, with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bearing most of the burden. In Botswana, tobacco use prevalence rose from 17.6% in 2017 to 22.2% in 2024. Despite this, tobacco control infrastructure remains limited. Tobacco Control Resource Centers (TCRCs) have been established to consolidate provider training, research, and dissemination of tobacco control resources. The World Health Organization (WHO) Centre for Tobacco Control in Africa (CTCA), a regional TCRC, has a cross-country mandate that could be further strengthened through complementa

Determinants of old age disability in Botswana: an empirical investigation using generalized linear models.

BACKGROUND: As Botswana experiences a demographic transition marked by an expanding population of older adults, understanding the determinants of disability among older adults becomes critical for shaping inclusive health and social policies. Disability in later life often stems not only from biological ageing but also from intersecting personal, household, and community-level conditions. Despite increasing attention to ageing in sub-Saharan Africa, few studies have comprehensively assessed the multilevel factors influencing functional limitations in older populations. METHODS: Drawing on nat

Serotype epidemiology and antibiotic resistance of pneumococcal isolates colonizing infants in Botswana (2016-2019).

BACKGROUND: In 2012, Botswana introduced 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-13) to its childhood immunization program in a 3+0 schedule, achieving coverage rates of above 90% by 2014. In other settings, PCV introduction has been followed by an increase in carriage or disease caused by non-vaccine serotypes, including some serotypes with a high prevalence of antibiotic resistance. METHODS: We characterized the serotype epidemiology and antibiotic resistance of pneumococcal isolates cultured from nasopharyngeal samples collected from infants (≤12 months) in southeastern Botswana betw
