Removal of SO2 from O2-containing flue gas by activated carbon fiber (ACF) impregnated with NH3.

Adsorption of SO(2) from the O(2)-containing flue gas by granular activated carbons (GACs) and activated carbon fibers (ACFs) impregnated with NH(3) was studied in this technical note. Experimental results showed that the ACFs were high-quality adsorbents due to their unique textural properties. In the presence of moisture, the desulphurization efficiency for the ACFs was improved significantly due to the formation of sulfuric acid. After NH(3) impregnation of ACF samples, nitrogen-containing functional groups (pyridyl C(5)H(4)N- and pyrrolyl C(4)H(4)N-) were detected on the sample surface by

Microwave-swing adsorption to capture and recover vapors from air streams with activated carbon fiber cloth.

Adsorption with regeneration is a desirable means to control the emissions of organic vapors such as hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from air streams as it allows for capture, recovery, and reuse of those VOCs/HAPS. Integration of activated-carbon fiber-cloth (ACFC) adsorbent with microwave regeneration provides promise as a new adsorption/ regeneration technology. This research investigates the feasibility of using microwaves to regenerate ACFC as part of a process for capture and recovery of organic vapors from gas streams. A bench-scale fixed-bed microw

Amperometric detection of perphenazine at a carbon fiber micro-disk bundle electrode by capillary zone electrophoresis.

A simple method for determination of perphenazine by capillary zone electrophoresis with amperometric detection is described. The optimum conditions of separation and detection are 1.50 x 10(-3) mol/l Na(2)B(4)O(7)-1.0 x 10(-3) mol/l NaOH (pH 9.9) for the buffer solution, 18 kV for the separation voltage, 5 kV and 5 s for the injection voltage and the injection time, and 0.80 V versus saturated calomel electrode for the detection potential, respectively. The limit of detection is 5.0 x 10(-8) mol/l or 44 amol (S/N=3). The linear range of the calibration curve is 1.00 x 10(-7) to 1.00 x 10(-4)

Contact-Accessible Silver Nanoparticle-Decorated Electrospun Carbon Fibers for Microplastics Detection by SERS.

Reliable detection of microplastics by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is often hindered by poor particle-substrate contact and limited access to plasmonic hotspots on conventional planar substrates optimized for molecular adsorption. Here, we report a rapid microwave-assisted carbothermal shock strategy to fabricate silver nanoparticle-decorated electrospun carbon fibers (AgNPs@ECF) as a three-dimensional plasmonic platform tailored for solid microplastic sensing. Localized microwave-induced heating in a mixed ethanol-hexane system enables Ag nanoparticle nucleation and anchoring on

The influence of carbon fiber arrangement in phenol-formaldehyde resin on the thermal resistance of the composite - 1.

The paper presents the results of research on the effect of fiber arrangement on the ablation properties of a phenol-formaldehyde-carbon composite. The resin undergoes pyrolytic changes, while carbon fibers are oxidized at high temperature. This composite is used in places exposed to high temperatures. It degrades under the influence of a high-density heat flux and under the influence of oxygen. The research presents the results of the effect an acetylene-oxygen flame on a phenol-formaldehyde-carbon composite based on ASTM E285-08 - Standard test method for oxyacetylene ablation testing of the

Hierarchical composite structures prepared by electrophoretic deposition of carbon nanotubes onto glass fibers.

Carbon nanotube/glass fiber hierarchical composite structures have been produced using an electrophoretic deposition (EPD) approach for integrating the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into unidirectional E-glass fabric, followed by infusion of an epoxy polymer matrix. The resulting composites show a hierarchical structure, where the structural glass fibers, which have diameters in micrometer range, are coated with CNTs having diameters around 10-20 nm. The stable aqueous dispersions of CNTs were produced using a novel ozonolysis and ultrasonication technique that results in dispersion and functionaliz

Carbon fiber replacement of the ligaments of the shoulder girdle and the treatment of lateral instability of the ankle joint.

A normal active human being will not accept chronic instability or persistent luxation of any joint. Many attempts have been made to stabilize a damaged joint with autogeneic and allogeneic materials and by various surgical techniques. In animal and clinical trials, carbon fibers are reported to be a promising material for ligament replacement in chronic joint instability. The authors are investigating carbon fibers not only for repair of chronic instability of knee joints but also for chronic luxations and subluxations of the sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular, and ankle joints. For long-ter

Fabrication and Performance Enhancement of Wood Liquefaction-Based Carbon Fibers Modified with Alumina Nanoparticles.

In this paper, alumina-modified wood liquefaction (AL-WP) was prepared by blending nano-alumina (Al2O3) into wood liquefaction phenolic resin (WP) using a co-blending method. Alumina-modified wood liquefaction protofilament fiber (AL-WPF) was obtained by melt-spinning, curing, and thermo-curing processes, which were followed by carbonization to obtain alumina-modified wood liquefaction carbon fiber (AL-WCF). This paper focuses on the enhancement effect of nano-alumina doping on the mechanical properties and heat resistance of wood liquefaction carbon fiber (WCF), explores the evolution of grap

Effect of carbon fiber addition on the performance of MnO2/PET for formaldehyde decomposition at room temperature.

The active sites of MnO2 particles in the slurry is easily covered due to the agglomeration effect. Herein, we added carbon fiber to the slurry, which could disperse MnO2 particles well and expose more active sites. Subsequently, we loaded the slurry containing MnO2 and carbon fiber onto the polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-based non-woven fabric (MnO2/PET-%C) by rolling method. The addition of carbon fiber significantly improved the load firmness of MnO2 on the fabric, while the pressure drop remained unaffected. As-synthesized composites incorporating MnO2 and carbon fibers achieved a low we

Carbon nanotube pathogenicity conforms to a unified theory for mesothelioma causation by elongate materials and fibers.

The purpose of this review is to elucidate how dimensional and durability characteristics of high aspect ratio nanomaterials (HARN), including carbon nanotubes (CNT) and metal nanowires (MeNW), contribute to understanding the fiber pathogenicity paradigm (FPP), including by explaining the structure-activity relationships (SAR) of a diverse range of natural and synthetic elongate materials that may or may not contribute to mesothelioma development in the lung. While the FPP was originally developed to explain the critical importance of asbestos and synthetic vitreous fiber length, width, aspect

Electrochemical Oxidation of EDTA in Nuclear Wastewater Using Platinum Supported on Activated Carbon Fibers.

A novel Pt/ACF (Pt supported on activated carbon fibers) electrode was successfully prepared with impregnation and electrodeposition method. Characterization of the electrodes indicated that the Pt/ACF electrode had a larger effective area and more active sites. Electrochemical degradation of ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA) in aqueous solution with Pt/ACF electrodes was investigated. The results showed that the 3% Pt/ACF electrode had a better effect on EDTA removal. The operational parameters influencing the electrochemical degradation of EDTA with 3% Pt/ACF electrode were optimized a

Biological monitoring of workers exposed to carbon disulfide (CS2) in a viscose rayon fibers factory.

The exposure-excretion relationship to carbon disulfide (CS2) vapor in 407 exposed workers was studied during the second half of the working week. Carbon disulfide concentrations were also determined in 50 nonexposed subjects. The geometric mean value for CS2 in urine samples from the latter was: 0.23 microgram/l (95% upper limit = 0.52 microgram/l) when log-normal distribution was assumed. Among the exposed workers, the CS2 level in urine samples collected after the first half shift exceeded the 95% upper limit of nonexposed subjects in every case. The time-weighted average intensity of expos

Laser-Induced Functionalization of Flexible Polyimide-Carbon Fiber for Real-Time Multimodal Physiological Monitoring of Chronic Wounds.

Translating laser‑induced graphene (LIG) from rigid planar films to wearable textiles has been limited by substrate transfer steps that fracture the porous carbon architecture. Here, we report laser‑induced functionalized fibers (LIFF), a transfer‑free strategy that directly writes graphitic carbon onto polyimide (PI) fiber substrates via laser irradiation, forming an in situ 3D conductive network. By optimizing defocus distance (z = -0.5 mm) and pulse density (PPI/DPI), we achieve subsurface graphitization and continuously program surface wettability without chemical or plasma treatment. This

Multiscale Transfer of Cohesive-Zone Parameters for Opening-Dominated Interlaminar Fracture in Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Aluminum Laminates.

Specimen-scale fitting can reproduce interlaminar fracture in carbon-fiber-reinforced aluminum laminates (CARALL) but obscures the physical origin of cohesive-zone parameters. We present a multiscale framework integrating molecular dynamics (MD), a representative volume element (RVE), finite element (FE) modeling, and opening-dominated asymmetric double-cantilever-beam (DCB) tests. At modeled high rates, an ideal nonbonded Al/epoxy interface exhibited normal and tangential strengths of 470.09 and 352.93 MPa, respectively. Across 0.001-0.005 Å/fs, normal and tangential peak tractions increased

Carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone implants versus titanium implants for spinal tumors: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: In the surgical treatment of spinal tumors, titanium has conventionally been the implant material of choice. However, they cause significant imaging artifacts, affecting radiotherapy planning and tumor surveillance. Carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) implants minimize imaging artifacts, improve radiotherapy dosing, and reduce radiation scattering. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the complications, outcomes, and impact on radiotherapy after surgical fixation with CFR-PEEK implants for spinal tumors, with comparison to titanium implant

Case of implant failure following osteosynthesis for an intertrochanteric femoral fracture using a carbon fiber intramedullary nail.

Carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) materials are radiolucent and produce fewer metallic artifacts during radiological examinations, making them a subject of growing interest as osteosynthesis materials in the field of orthopedics. However, clinical reports on carbon intramedullary nails are still limited, and there are few reports on postoperative complications. The present case report describes a 55-year-old female patient who sustained an unstable intertrochanteric fracture of the left femur and underwent open reduction and internal fixation using a CFR-PEEK intramedulla

Enhancing Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymers' Performance and Reparability Through Core-Shell Rubber Modification and Patch Repair Techniques.

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are widely used in high-performance applications, but their inherent brittleness and susceptibility to impact damage remain critical challenges. This study investigated the effect of core-shell rubber (CSR) particles as impact modifiers on the mechanical properties of CFRPs and evaluated patch repair techniques for damaged CFRP panels. Mechanical tests, including flexural, tensile, short-beam, fracture toughness, and impact tests, were conducted on reference and CSR-modified specimens to assess their structural performance. The CSR-modified samples demo

Carbon fiber-laminated epoxy resin causing chronic occupational dermatosis: presentation with erythroderma and dyschromia-a case report.

Epoxy resins are a common cause of occupational allergic contact dermatitis. Carbon fiber-laminated epoxy resin (CFLER) is a newer material with enhanced mechanical properties, but its health effects remain underreported. A 46-year-old male worker developed erythroderma involving >90% of his body surface and dyschromia after chronic exposure to CFLER in a confined workspace. Skin biopsy demonstrated features of chronic dermatitis, and immunohistochemistry revealed uneven melanocyte distribution. Laboratory studies showed elevated immunoglobulin E levels without internal organ dysfunction. Ches
