MRI assessment of temporomandibular disc position among various mandibular positions: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this pilot study was to assess temporomandibular joint disc movement relative to the condyle among centric relation (CR), physiologic rest position (PRP), and maximal intercuspation position (MIP) in healthy patients without signs or symptoms of any temporomandibular disorder. The hypothesis was that as the condyle rotated clockwise or translated anteriorly, the disc would also move in an anterior direction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Magnetic resonance images were obtained on 20 volunteers in CR, physiologic rest, and MIP. Three investigators measured the location of the disc

Salvation of a severely resorbed mandibular ridge with a neutral zone technique.

The objective of any prosthodontic service is to restore the patient to normal function, contour, esthetics, speech, and health. An optimum denture stability is difficult to achieve in conventional complete dentures. This problem is more magnified in mandibular dentures. The design of prostheses to replace lost teeth and resorbed ridges is largely determined by the position and amount of morphological change in the denture-bearing area of the jaws. A neutral zone may be defined as the space where, during function, the forces of the lips and cheeks pressing inward neutralize the forces of the t

Dynamic resolution of functionally related gene sets in response to acute heat stress.

BACKGROUND: Using a gene clustering strategy we determined intracellular pathway relationships within skeletal myotubes in response to an acute heat stress stimuli. Following heat shock, the transcriptome was analyzed by microarray in a temporal fashion to characterize the dynamic relationship of signaling pathways. RESULTS: Bioinformatics analyses exposed coordination of functionally-related gene sets, depicting mechanism-based responses to heat shock. Protein turnover-related pathways were significantly affected including protein folding, pre-mRNA processing, mRNA splicing, proteolysis and

Surgical wound dehiscence: a conceptual framework for patient assessment.

This paper presents a conceptual framework which outlines the risk factors associated with surgical wound dehiscence (SWD) as identified in the literature. The purpose for the development of the conceptual framework was to derive an evidence-based, informed understanding of factors associated with SWD, in order to inform a programme of research on the aetiology and potential risk factors of SWD. Incorporated within the patient-centric conceptual framework are patient related comorbidities, intraoperative and postoperative risk factors related to SWD. These are categorised as either 'mechanical

Beyond Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA): Why Physical Activity Surveillance May Be Failing Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Girls in Australia.

Physical inactivity among culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) girls in Australia is typically framed as a participation problem. However, emerging evidence suggests it is equally a measurement problem. Current surveillance systems rely heavily on self-report tools, sport-centric participation models and generic moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) thresholds that may underestimate meaningful movement exposure whilst failing to detect genuine developmental risk. Longitudinal data show that CALD girls accumulate the lowest MVPA across adolescence, yet these patterns may reflect

Therapeutic Insights and Immune Pathway Connections Revealed by Core Symptom Gene Network Analysis in Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) exhibits marked clinical heterogeneity that is poorly captured by conventional disease-centric analyses, hindering the development of personalized therapies. We propose a symptom-centered network pharmacology framework that directly links individual clinical symptoms to their underlying molecular mechanisms and therapeutic targets. AS- and symptom-associated genes were collected from GeneCards and prioritized using centrality analysis within protein-protein interaction networks. Symptom relevance was validated using patient-derived transcriptomic datasets. Network p

Evaluating emerging amyloid-β centric drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The amyloid cascade hypothesis provided a compelling rationale for Alzheimer's disease (AD) drug development, but many amyloid-β (Aβ)-targeted agents failed to show benefit. The present review article evaluated emerging Aβ-directed therapies, focusing on mechanisms, clinical efficacy, safety, and regulatory progress. AREAS COVERED: The recent approvals of lecanemab and donanemab offered the first convincing evidence that reducing Aβ burden can modestly slow cognitive decline in early AD. Beyond these first-generation monoclonal antibodies, the pipeline includes next-generation a

Effect of titrated mandibular advancement and jaw opening on the upper airway in nonapneic men: a magnetic resonance imaging and cephalometric study.

The aim of this study was to examine adaptive changes in the cross-sectional area of the upper airway during mandibular advancement and jaw opening and to explore whether these changes are directly related to morphologic features of the mandible. Fourteen nonapneic men participated in this study. A custom-made oral device was used to keep the mandible at 0% (F(0)V(0)), 50% (F(50)V(0)), 75% (F(75)V(0)), or 100% (F(100)V(0)) of maximum advancement, and at 50% (F(75)V(50)), 75% (F(75)V(75)), or 100% (F(75)V(100)) of maximum gape at F(75)V(0). Curvature tuning in areas V2 and V4 of the developing macaque.

Visual areas V2 and V4 are critical for the perception of visual forms in primates. Neurons in area V4 of macaque monkeys are often sensitive to the curvature of specific boundary segments within shapes, but it is unknown how curvature tuning is represented in the developing brain. To address this, we recorded multiunit neural activity from areas V2 and V4 of two macaque monkeys, at both 30 and 58 weeks of age, in response to shape stimuli which primarily varied in curvature along a single segment. Observable curvature tuning was adult-like from 30 weeks of age in both V2 and V4. We compared t

Adiposity, type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk: Use and abuse of the body mass index.

The worldwide prevalence of individuals with an elevated body weight has increased steadily over the past five decades. Billions of research dollars have been invested to improve our understanding of the causes and consequences of having an elevated body weight. All this knowledge has, however, failed to influence populational body weight trajectories of most countries around the world. Research on the definition of "obesity" has also evolved. Body mass index (BMI), the most commonly used tool to make its diagnosis, has major limitations. In this review article, we will highlight evidence from

Emphasizing Patient-Centricity Through a Tailored Training Program to Empower Patients, Advocates, and Ethics Committees in Good Clinical Practice.

ObjectivesGood Clinical Practices (GCP) are essential for patient-centric research. The standard bioethics and GCP training emphasizing a "one-size-fits-all" approach may not adequately equip ethics committee members, especially the lay and social scientist members, towards their critical role in reviewing clinical trials and related documentation. This article explores a patient-centered, patient advocates-driven training program focused on raising awareness about research ethics and GCP among patients, advocates and ethics committee members.MethodsA patient advocates-driven program called Pa

The unitary model for estrogen deficiency and the pathogenesis of osteoporosis: is a revision needed?

Over a decade ago, we proposed a "unitary" model for the pathogenesis of osteoporosis that identified estrogen deficiency as the predominant cause of both the early, accelerated, and late slow phases of bone loss in postmenopausal women and as a contributing cause of the continuous phase of bone loss in aging men. While this was a plausible model then, new data over the intervening years suggest a need to modify these concepts. Indeed, based largely on rodent studies, a "revisionist" view of the pathogenesis of osteoporosis has been proposed recently that attempts a paradigm shift from the est
