The interaction of distress tolerance and intolerance of uncertainty in the prediction of symptom reduction across CBT for social anxiety disorder.

Distress tolerance (DT) and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) have been identified as transdiagnostic processes that predict symptom severity across a range of distinct anxiety disorders. However, the joint effect of these two variables on therapeutic outcome has not yet been examined. It is possible that DT and IU may both impact on treatment response to cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) in clients with anxiety, as clients with weak DT and strong IU may be less likely to engage in exposure and cognitive restructuring tasks across treatment due to their associated distress. The purpose of this

Efficacy of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Based Online Self-Help Group for Depression and Suicide Ideation: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of depressive disorders, access to effective treatment remains limited due to financial, geographic, and social barriers. Online self-help groups offer a promising and scalable form of peer-based support beyond traditional clinical settings. Integrating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques such as cognitive restructuring and behavioral activation into self-help groups may enhance their effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the efficacy of a cognitive behavioral therapy-based online self-help group (COS) that integrates structured CBT t

Explaining the effects of treatment components in internet-based cognitive-behavioral treatment for social anxiety disorder: A factorial mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: More understanding of how internet-based cognitive-behavioral programs (ICBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) work could help further optimize treatment. This paper examines the mediational role of knowledge of SAD, negative social cognitions, self-focused attention, avoidance of social situations, and use of safety behaviors in explaining the main components of ICBT for SAD (psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, attention training, and exposure). METHODS: In a 24 factorial trial, 464 participants diagnosed with SAD were randomized to 16 combinations of components of a minim

Reducing anxiety sensitivity with exercise.

BACKGROUND: Exercise interventions repeatedly have been shown to be efficacious for the treatment of depression, and initial studies indicate similar efficacy for the treatment of anxiety conditions. To further study the potential beneficial role of prescriptive exercise for anxiety-related conditions, we examined the role of exercise in reducing fears of anxiety-related sensations (anxiety sensitivity). METHODS: We randomly assigned 60 participants with elevated levels of anxiety sensitivity to a 2-week exercise intervention, a 2-week exercise plus cognitive restructuring intervention, or a

Gambling exposure in virtual reality and modification of urge to gamble.

The urge to gamble is a psychological, physiological, and emotional state involved in the maintenance of pathological gambling. The ability of repeated exposure to a virtual gambling environment to modify the urge to gamble and perceived self-efficacy (PSE) is investigated. Ten video lottery players move throughout a virtual bar with five video lottery terminals five times. The urge to gamble and PSE do not significantly vary during exposure to the gambling environment. However, the desire to gamble significantly increases when passing from the practice environment to the gambling environment.

A psychotherapist engages in behaviour therapy.

The article reviews clinical findings that led an experienced psychotherapist to favour behaviour therapy over psychotherapy for patients who have anxiety disorders involving avoidance of specific situations or avoidance of specific activities. It is maintained that anxiety disorders are best treated through psychotherapy when they are demonstrably connected to disturbances in interpersonal relations. Three basic procedures in behaviour therapy are described: desensitization, direct exposure, and cognitive restructuring. Transference patterns in each of these procedures are delineated. A fourt

Does exposure to internal cues enhance exposure to external cues in agoraphobia with panic? A pilot controlled study of self-exposure.

BACKGROUND: The value of internal (interoceptive) cues for exposure is under debate and so was tested in a pilot controlled study. METHODS: Outpatients with panic disorder and severe agoraphobia were randomised to 10 weeks of self-exposure to either (1) both internal (interoceptive) and external cues (n = 12) or (2) external cues only (n = 14). Both groups were trained in slow deep breathing and asked to carry out daily self-exposure homework. Neither group had cognitive restructuring. RESULTS: By post-treatment and follow-up all outcome measures improved significantly in both treatment grou

What shapes mathematics anxiety in K-12 education? A scoping review of research from 2019 to 2025.

INTRODUCTION: Despite growing interest in mathematics anxiety, comprehensive syntheses of recent K-12 research remain limited. This scoping review aims to map the literature on mathematics anxiety that was published between January 2019 and December 2025. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, this review analyzed 132 empirical studies. The analysis categorized influencing factors into antecedents, processes, and outcomes, while also examining methodological characteristics and interventions. RESULTS: Findings indicate that antecedent factors comprise individual (e.g., gender, grade) and

Exposure therapy for youth with anxiety: Utilization rates and predictors of implementation in a sample of practicing clinicians from across the United States.

Exposure therapy is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment technique for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders. Regardless, therapists in the community are reported to use exposure relatively rarely compared with other approaches. The goal of the present study was to identify how practicing clinicians treat youth with anxiety disorders across the United States and what factors contribute to their use of exposure therapy. Recruited from public directories, 257 private practice therapists who treat anxious youth were surveyed. Non-exposure cognitive-behavioral techniques like cog

Internet-based interventions for traumatic stress-related mental health problems: a review and suggestion for future research.

Exposure to potentially traumatic events is a common occurrence. Most individuals exposed to such an event are resilient or recover rapidly, although some individuals develop psychological problems that warrant treatment. However, a small percentage of individuals seek traditional treatment, thereby calling for novel approaches or methodologies of treatment. The present paper provides a comprehensive and critical review of the extant literature on computerized and internet-based interventions (IBIs) for traumatic stress-related conditions (i.e., panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder/co

Deimplementation in the provision of opioid agonist treatment to achieve equity of care for people engaged in treatment: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Deimplementation, the removal or reduction of potentially hazardous approaches to care, is key to progressing social equity in health. While the benefits of opioid agonist treatment (OAT) are well-evidenced, wide variability in the provision of treatment attenuates positive outcomes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, OAT services deimplemented aspects of provision which had long been central to treatment in Australia; supervised dosing, urine drug screening, and frequent in-person attendance for review. This analysis explored how providers considered social inequity in health of patien

The impact of physical activity on internet addiction among college students: the chain mediation role of rumination and mindfulness.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA) has emerged as a growing concern among college students, often accompanied by emotional distress and impaired self-regulation. While physical activity (PA) has been recognized as a protective factor, the underlying psychological mechanisms remain insufficiently explored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of PA on IA among Chinese college students, with a focus on the mediating roles of rumination and mindfulness and their potential chain mediation pathway. METHODS: A total of 1,019 undergraduate students (Mage = 20.30, SD = 1.59; 61.3%

Empirically supported psychological interventions for social phobia in adults: a qualitative review of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Social phobia is a chronic disorder that results in substantial impairment. We conducted a qualitative review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of psychological interventions for social phobia. METHOD: Articles were identified through searches of electronic databases and manual searches of reference lists. They were classified by psychological interventions evaluated. Data regarding treatment, participants and results were then extracted and tabulated. We identified which psychological interventions are empirically supported, using the scheme proposed by Chambless & Hollon (J

The Mediating Role of Attentional Inflexibility in the Association between Metacognitions and Severity of Gambling Disorder Symptoms.

Gambling Disorder and its adverse outcomes are prevalent in Chinese gamblers, and modifiable cognitive factors should be identified to improve interventions. Drawing on the Self-Regulatory Executive Function (S-REF) model, the present study examined the associations between positive and negative metacognitions about gambling, attentional inflexibility, and severity of Gambling Disorder symptoms in 1,024 Chinese gamblers. Results revealed that, consistent with hypotheses, both positive and negative metacognitions about gambling were positively correlated with severity of Gambling Disorder sympt

Exercise and Chronic Pain.

In this chapter, we describe the impact and etiology of chronic pain, the associated changes in the nervous system, and the mechanisms by which exercise may be able to affect and reverse these changes. Evidence for efficacy of exercise in different conditions associated with chronic pain is presented, with focus on chronic low back pain, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and migraines. While the efficacy of exercise and level of evidence supporting it vary in different diseases, exercise has direct and indirect benefits for most patients suffering from chronic pain. Effective

Impaired cortical neuronal homeostasis and cognition after diffuse traumatic brain injury are dependent on microglia and type I interferon responses.

Neuropsychiatric complications including depression and cognitive decline develop in the years after traumatic brain injury (TBI), negatively affecting quality of life. Microglial and type 1 interferon (IFN-I) responses are associated with the transition from acute to chronic neuroinflammation after diffuse TBI in mice. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine if impaired neuronal homeostasis and increased IFN-I responses intersected after TBI to cause cognitive impairment. Here, the RNA profile of neurons and microglia after TBI (single nucleus RNA-sequencing) with or without microgli

RDoC-informed explainable AI as a paradigm for multilevel Alzheimer's disease diagnosis and progression prediction: a systematic review.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is gaining popularity in early diagnosis and monitoring of dementia. Herein, we recommend the incorporation of the National Institute of Mental Health's Research Domain Criteria (NIMH-RDoC) framework with XAI-informed diagnostic protocols to help establish diagnosis at early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). RDoC has a dimensional structure that extends across units of analysis from genes and molecules to circuits, physiology, behavior, and introspection. By restructuring diverse features as inputs including apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype, amyloid
