Room temperature ADP-induced first-stage hyperaggregation of human platelets: the cause of rewarming deaths by thrombocytopenia in neonatal cold injury.

No satisfactory explanation has been proposed to explain the rewarming deaths common in neonatal cold injury (NCI). Since thrombocytopenia exists in NCI, aggregation studies were performed on human platelets at the relevant temperatures to search for a mechanism that would link thrombocytopenia with this complication. At the temperatures found in infants suffering from NCI, an increased sensitivity to ADP was noted: room-temperature ADP-induced first-stage hyperaggregation. Evidence exists to suggest that adequate release of ADP from erythrocytes occurs in vivo to cause such aggregation. Hypot

Effect of Ice Consistency and Sodium Chloride Additives on Cooling Speed and Final Temperature for Cold Water-Ice Immersion in Heat Stroke.

INTRODUCTION: Heat stroke can rapidly progress to end organ damage and death if not promptly treated. The diagnosis is characterized by core body temperature > 40.5 °C. In this study we evaluate how the form of ice (crushed vs cubed), the addition of sodium chloride, and the initial temperature of water together affect the rate of cooling for standardized cooling bath mixtures used to treat patients experiencing heat stroke. METHODS: We prepared four cold water immersion mixtures using 12 quarts of ice and 12 quarts of water (11.36 liters) under different conditions:Test Case 1: Cubed ice wit

Biodegradation of PCL, PBS, and PBAT at low temperatures by Aeromicrobium sp. JJY06: A newly isolated strain for cold-environment plastic cleanup.

The widespread use of plastics has created a significant environmental challenge due to the accumulation of plastic waste. In this study, we isolated a bacterial strain, named JJY06, from rice field soil in the Republic of Korea. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the strain was identified as an Aeromicrobium species, showing 99.93 % similarity to Aeromicrobium tamlense SSW1-57. JJY06 demonstrated the ability to degrade several commercial bio-plastics, including poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), polybutylene succinate (PBS), and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), even at low temperature

Lower critical temperature and cold-induced thermogenesis of lean and overweight humans are inversely related to body mass and basal metabolic rate.

It is colloquially stated that body size plays a role in the human response to cold, but the magnitude and details of this interaction are unclear. To explore the inherent influence of body size on cold-exposed metabolism, we investigated the relation between body composition and resting metabolic rate in humans at thermoneutrality and during cooling within the nonshivering thermogenesis range. Body composition and resting energy expenditure were measured in 20 lean and 20 overweight men at thermoneutrality and during individualized cold exposure. Metabolic rates as a function of ambient tempe

Caution needed in using oral polio vaccine beyond the cold chain: vaccine vial monitors may be unreliable at high temperatures.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Stabilized live attenuated oral polio vaccine (OPV) is used to immunize children up to the age of five years to prevent poliomyelitis. It is strongly advised that the cold-chain should be maintained until the vaccine is administered. It is assumed, that vaccine vial monitors (VVMs) are reliable at all temperatures. VVMs are tested at 37°C and it is assumed that the labels reach discard point before vaccine potency drops to >0.6 log10. This study was undertaken to see if VVMs were reliable when exposed to high temperatures as can occur in field conditions in India. MET

Dissociation of the nuclear WWOX/TRAF2 switch renders UV/cold shock-mediated nuclear bubbling cell death at low temperatures.

BACKGROUND: Normal cells express functional tumor suppressor WW domain-containing oxidoreductase (WWOX), designated WWOXf. UV irradiation induces WWOXf cells to undergo bubbling cell death (BCD) - an event due to the accumulation of nuclear nitric oxide (NO) gas that forcefully pushes the nuclear and cell membranes to form one or two bubbles at room temperature (22 °C) and below. In contrast, when WWOX-deficient or -dysfunctional (WWOXd) cells are exposed to UV and/or cold shock, the cells undergo nuclear pop-out explosion death (POD). We aimed to determine the morphological and biochemical ch

Some like it hot, some like it cold; proteome comparison of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo strains propagated at different temperatures.

Leptospirosis is a global zoonotic disease affecting humans and livestock species. Bacterin vaccines lack cross protection between serogroups, and include multiple serovars propagated at 29 °C. Recent work demonstrated substantial variation in the transcriptome of identical species and serovars of Leptospira. Here, substantial differences in protein abundance profiles were identified in Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo; strain HB203, which was isolated in the 1980s, compared to newer strains TC129 and TC273 isolated in 2016, and whether they were propagated at the routine temperature o

Cold temperature delays ovarian development of largemouth bass by inhibiting sex hormone release, angiogenesis, apoptosis and autophagy during out-of-season reproduction.

Cold temperature is an effective method of achieving out-of-season reproduction and obtaining fry in the autumn. This study investigated the effects of low-temperature (12-16 °C) environment on the out-of-season reproduction of largemouth bass, particularly the delayed effects on ovarian development. During the period of delayed out-of-season reproduction, there was a significant reduction in the levels of serum sex hormones (FSH and LH) and their respective receptors (FSHR and LHCGR). Exposure to cold temperature significantly reduced the expression of gonadal development genes (IGF-1, GDF9,

Brain temperature changes during selective cooling with endovascular intracarotid cold saline infusion: simulation using human data fitted with an integrated mathematical model.

The feasibility of rapid cerebral hypothermia induction in humans with intracarotid cold saline infusion (ICSI) was investigated using a hybrid approach of jugular venous bulb temperature (JVBT) sampling and mathematical modeling of transient and steady state brain temperature distribution. This study utilized both forward mathematical modeling, in which brain temperatures were predicted based on input saline temperatures, and inverse modeling, where brain temperatures were inferred based on JVBT. Changes in ipsilateral anterior circulation territory temperature (IACT) were estimated in eight

Ingestion of Coffee Polyphenols Improves a Scaly Skin Surface and the Recovery Rate of Skin Temperature after Cold Stress: A Randomized, Controlled Trial.

Coffee polyphenols (CPPs) derived from coffee beans have beneficial effects on blood pressure and vascular endothelial function. In addition, CPPs suppress ultraviolet light induced erythema. However, the effects of CPPs on dry skin and cutaneous vascular function have not been clarified. We investigated the effects of CPPs on dry skin and the recovery rate (RR) of skin temperature after a cold-stress test as a measure of vascular function in subjects with visible scaliness in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study. The subjects were divided into two groups, the CPP group and the

Temporal plasticity of thermal tolerance and cellular responses in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) during warm acclimation and subsequent cold acclimation to baseline temperature.

Global warming presents a substantial threat to aquatic ectotherms, including the economically significant Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Although warm acclimation can increase heat tolerance, little is known about the dynamic processes and cellular responses associated with the acquisition and loss of this increased tolerance. This study investigated changes in critical thermal maximum (CTmax), liver structure, hepatic antioxidant activity, and heat shock protein (HSP) expression in Atlantic salmon during prolonged warm acclimation followed by cold acclimation back to baseline temperature. Cold temperature induces mucin hypersecretion from normal human bronchial epithelial cells in vitro through a transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8)-mediated mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Cold air stimulus is a major environmental factor that exacerbates chronic inflammatory airway diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. At the molecular level, cold is detected by transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8). To date, TRPM8 expression has not been characterized in the airway epithelium of patients with COPD. The role of TRPM8 channels in a series of airway responses induced by cold stimuli and the molecular and biochemical pathways of TRPM8 in regulating cold-induced responses are largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: We sought to expl

Growth and survival of heat-, cold-, and acid-stressed Salmonella Typhimurium and native bacteria on chicken wings during refrigerated storage and temperature abuse.

During food processing, Salmonella is frequently exposed to environmental stresses that may alter its growth and survival, thereby influencing food safety and accuracy of microbial risk assessment. This study investigated the behavior of Salmonella Typhimurium (ST), unstressed (USST), heat-stressed (HSST), cold-stressed (CSST), and acid-stressed (ASST) on chicken wings and developed models to predict shelf life during storage at 4, 10, and 20°C. At all temperatures, native bacteria (NB) grew and were modeled using a no-lag phase (primary) model and Ratkowsky square-root (secondary) model for c

Effect of wet clothing removal on skin temperature in subjects exposed to cold and wrapped in a vapor barrier: a human, randomized, crossover field study.

BACKGROUND: Prehospital care for cold-stressed and hypothermic patients focuses on effective insulation and rewarming. When encountering patients wearing wet clothing, rescuers can either remove the wet clothing before isolating the patient or isolate the patient using a vapor barrier. Wet clothing removal increases skin exposure but avoids the need to heat the wet clothing during rewarming. Leaving wet clothing on will avoid skin exposure but is likely to increase heat loss during rewarming. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of wet clothing removal compared to containing the moisture us

Integrated analysis of structure, physiology, transcriptome and metabolome reveals key metabolic pathway responses of cold-tolerant pear cultivar germplasms under low-temperature stress.

Freezing injury during winter is a critical abiotic stress that severely impacts the growth, development and, fruit quality of deciduous fruit trees. Cold tolerance can be induced through seasonal cold acclimation, which involves coordinated adjustments in tissue structure, physiology, and biochemistry driven by natural low-temperature, with distinct strategies across plant species. However, the cold-tolerant mechanisms of pear trees during cold acclimation remain poorly understood. Here, one-year-old branches of 10 pear cultivar germplasms were evaluated for cold tolerance based on the semi-l
