Treatment of murine fusariosis with SCH 56592.

Doses of 10 to 100 mg of the azole antifungal agent SCH 5692/kg of body weight/day were studied in immunocompetent mice as therapy for systemic infection by Fusarium solani. Treatment was begun 1 h after intravenous infection and continued daily for 4 or 13 doses. Prolongation of survival and organ clearance were dependent on both the dose and the duration of SCH 56592 therapy, with the best results seen at 50 and 100 mg/kg/day. The results at the highest doses of SCH 56592 used (50 or 100 mg/kg/day) were comparable to those obtained with amphotericin B at 1 mg/kg/day. SCH 56592 has potential

Defining unnecessary disinfection procedures for single-dose and multiple-dose vials.

BACKGROUND: Recommendations in the literature conflict on the necessity of disinfecting single-use vials prior to aspiration of fluid. Interventions to disinfect the stopper surface on multiple-dose vials vary considerably. OBJECTIVES: To determine the necessity of alcohol disinfection of the stopper on single-dose vials and to compare povidone-iodine and alcohol versus alcohol-only disinfection of the stopper prior to each needle penetration on multiple-dose vials. METHODS: The rubber stopper surfaces of 100 single-dose vials were cultured for the presence of bacteria. To determine the effi

[Aspects of hospital hygiene in Legionella infections].

Legionella inevitably are imported from natural reservoirs into drinking-water supplies. Bacterial growth predominantly occurs at water temperatures between 40 degrees C und 50 degrees C (104 degrees F and 122 degrees F). Heat conduction to insufficiently insulated cold water tubes implies the possibility of increased contamination also there. Problems with contamination arise in parts of the water supplies with stagnant warm water. Therefore, reservoirs should be descaled regularly. In general, for prophylaxis are recommended raising the temperature of warm water to 60 degrees C (140 degrees

Apparent failure of brain heart infusion broth to cultivate meningococci from clinically infected patients.

Brain Heart Infusion broth is a widely used medium for the isolation of pathogenic bacteria from body fluids. Cerebro spinal fluid and blood inoculated into this medium from clinically meningitic infants infected with Neisseria meningitidis appeared not to support the growth of this organism. In laboratory experiments the broth did not support the growth of Neisseria meningitidis unless adequately vented and with addition of blood. Thorough mixing was necessary to disperse microcolonies that formed in the base blood layer of blood cultures. When this was done they were isolated using standard

In vitro evaluation of anti-microbial efficacy of Trigonella foenum-graecum and its constituents on oral biofilms.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The extracts obtained from the leaves and seeds of Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) are effective against various microbial infections. The phytoconstituents of Trigonella foenum-graecum have shown promising effects as anti-diabetics, anti-helmentic, anti-microbial, antifungal, and antipyretic, but its impact on oral pathogens is yet to be established. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the antimicrobial efficacy of phytoconstituents of Trigonella foenum-graecum as compared to 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The methanolic extracts of

Airborne Bacterial Deposition Onto Surgical Sites Under Operating Room Versus Field Sterility: A Passive Air Sampling Study Across 3 Surgical Environments.

BACKGROUND: Airborne microbial contamination contributes to surgical site infections. While operating rooms (ORs) use specialized ventilation, many minor procedures are now performed outside the main suite using field sterility. This study compared airborne bacterial deposition across 3 clinical settings with differing sterility protocols. METHODS: An observational environmental sampling study was conducted in a minor procedures room, a day surgery suite, and a main OR. Minor procedures and day surgery used identical field-sterility draping; the OR used full sterile draping. On each sampling

Analysis of mono, duo and multispecies biofilms of Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis are nosocomial pathogens often associated with hard-to-treat infections due to their ability to form biofilms, a key virulence factor. Within biofilms, microbial interactions modulate virulence and antimicrobial resistance, resulting in therapeutic failures and poor patient outcomes. Biofilms account for nearly 80% of chronic infections, highlighting their persistence and difficulty of eradication. This study evaluated the interactions of P. aeruginosa, E. faecalis, and S. aureus in mono-, duo-, and multi-species cultures

Influence of taurine haloamines (TauCl and TauBr) on the development of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm: a preliminary study.

Biofilms are consortia of microorganisms (sessile cells) that form on various surfaces including mucosal membranes or teeth. Bacterial biofilms cause many human infections such as chronic sinusitis, acne vulgaris, periodontal diseases, and chronic wounds. These infections are persistent as they show increased resistance to antibiotics and host defense system. Taurine chloramine (TauCl) and taurine bromamine (TauBr) are the physiological products of activated neutrophils, resulting from the reaction between taurine with hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypobromous acid (HOBr), respectively. It has

Salicylate reduces susceptibility of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to multiple antituberculosis drugs.

Salicylate induces multiple antibiotic resistance in various bacterial species. Here we investigated the effect of salicylate on the susceptibility of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to a range of antituberculosis (anti-TB) drugs. In the presence of salicylate, the killing effects of isoniazid (INH), rifampin (RMP), ethambutol (EMB), streptomycin (STR), and p-aminosalicylate (PAS) were reduced, as shown with a tetrazolium redox dye viability assay and a bacterial survival assay. Salicylate-induced resistance was more pronounced for PAS, STR, and EMB but was not apparent for INH and RMP when salicyl

In vitro synergistic effects of a short cationic peptide and clinically used antibiotics against drug-resistant isolates of Brucella melitensis.

PURPOSE: In the last few decades, increasing microbial resistance to common antibiotics has attracted researchers' attention to the development of new classes of antibiotics such as antimicrobial peptides. Accordingly, the aim of the current study was to evaluate antimicrobial effects of the CM11 peptide alone and combined with common antibiotics against drug-resistant isolates of Brucella melitensis. METHODOLOGY: A total of 50 pathogenic samples of B. melitensis were isolated from patients and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern was evaluated by E-test. Then, the synergistic reaction of

In vitro activity of rifaximin against isolates from patients with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Rifaximin, a non-absorbable rifamycin derivative, has published clinical efficacy in the alleviation of symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is associated with the pathogenesis of IBS. This study describes for the first time the antimicrobial effect of rifaximin against SIBO micro-organisms from humans. Fluid was aspirated from the third part of the duodenum from 567 consecutive patients; quantitative cultures diagnosed SIBO in 117 patients (20.6%). A total of 170 aerobic micro-organisms were isolated and the in vitro efficacy o

Microbiological and physicochemical dynamics during black tea kombucha fermentation and their association with Salmonella Enteritidis survival.

Kombucha tea, a fermented beverage, is widely consumed and gaining global popularity for its perceived functional properties. The kombucha microbial community comprises bacteria and yeast that can produce antimicrobial metabolites during fermentation, thereby suppressing foodborne pathogens. However, this aspect of kombucha's functionality remains only partially characterized under controlled conditions. This study, therefore investigated the survival of Salmonella Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) and the associated physicochemical parameters during 14 days of black-tea kombucha fermentation. The
