Fabrication and Performance of Self-Toughening Benzoxazine Resin and Glass Fiber-Reinforced Composites.

A series of self-toughening benzoxazine resins containing amino-terminated polyarylene ether nitrile (APEN) segments were synthesized from bisphenol-A, paraformaldehyde, and a mixed amine source of APEN and melamine. Unlike conventional physical blending toughening, the APEN segments are covalently incorporated into the benzoxazine network via their amino end groups. This chemical integration not only significantly improves toughness but also simultaneously enhances thermal and dielectric properties, overcoming the common trade-off of "toughening without heat resistance". Meanwhile, melamine s

A Novel High-Strength Dental Resin Composite Based on BaSi2O2N2 for Caries Restoration.

Dental resin composite (DRC) is the most widely used restorative material for caries filling treatments. However, DRC has limitations, including incomplete curing and suboptimal mechanical properties, which restrict its clinical application. In this study, we combined the mechanoluminescent material BaSi2O2N2:Eu2+ (BSON) with DRC to create a novel DRC (BD) capable of emitting blue light under occlusal force. This study explored a resin composite with enhanced curing efficiency and improved mechanical properties. Characterization of the mechanical properties demonstrated that, as the BSON dopin

Cytotoxicity and Genotoxicity of Resin-Based Dental Composites Modified with Quaternary Ammonium Salts.

The primary reason of dental restoration failure is the recurrence of caries, driving research to incorporate quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) into resin-based composites (RBCs). Given the prolonged contact of these materials with oral tissue, this in vitro study assessed the biocompatibility (cytotoxicity and genotoxicity) profiles of experimental RBCs modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DODAB), using two restorative materials: an unmodified-experimental composite, KE, and Flow-Art (FA) as comparative standards. The primarily novelty of

Antibacterial Agents for Composite Resin Restorative Materials: Current Knowledge and Future Prospects.

Resin composites became the material of choice for direct restorations in anterior and posterior teeth. Despite the revolutionary improvement in the material, restoration failure is still a major drawback due to the material's inherent negative properties, including a lack of antibacterial effects. Therefore, many attempts have been made to incorporate antibacterial agents into resin composite materials to improve their antimicrobial properties and prevent secondary caries formation. Multiple laboratory studies have been conducted using different antibacterial agents, such as quaternary ammoni

The germicidal effect, biosafety and mechanical properties of antibacterial resin composite in cavity filling.

In recent years, dental resin materials have become increasingly popular for cavity filling. However, these materials can shrink during polymerization, leading to microleakages that enable bacteria to erode tooth tissue and cause secondary caries. As a result, there is great clinical demand for the development of antibacterial resins. The principle of antibacterial resin includes contact killing and filler-release killing of bacteria. For contact killing, quaternary ammonium salts (QACs) and antibacterial peptides (AMPs) can be added. For filler-release killing, chlorhexidine (CHX) and nanopar

Direct composite resin fillings versus amalgam fillings for permanent posterior teeth.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, amalgam has been used for filling cavities in posterior teeth, and it continues to be the restorative material of choice in some low- and middle-income countries due to its effectiveness and relatively low cost. However, there are concerns over the use of amalgam restorations (fillings) with regard to mercury release in the body and the environmental impact of mercury disposal. Dental composite resin materials are an aesthetic alternative to amalgam, and their mechanical properties have developed sufficiently to make them suitable for restoring posterior teeth. Never

Indirect resin-bonded fiber-reinforced composite anterior bridge: A case report.

The loss of anterior teeth can be painful for patients, both psychologically and socially. In recent years, fiber-reinforced composite resins (FRCs) have gained increasing acceptance in mainstream prosthodontics as viable alternatives to alloy-based restorations. A combination of good esthetics and fracture toughness validates their use in a diverse range of clinical applications. In this study, a bridge was constructed with hybrid composite resin placed around a resin-impregnated, plasma-etched, polyalkene fiber bonded to the abutment tooth enamel using the acid-etch technique. This method of
