The prevalence of personality disorders in hypochondriasis.

BACKGROUND: Although Axis I hypochondriasis is closely related to certain personality characteristics, the nature and extent of personality dysfunction in these patients still needs clarification. This study assessed the prevalence of personality disorders observed in hypochondriacal patients, described the types and comorbidity of personality disorders, and compared the psychological distress of patients with and without the most common comorbid personality disorder. METHOD: One hundred fifteen patients meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, criteria f

A meta-analysis examining the relations among pathological gambling, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and obsessive-compulsive traits.

Pathological gambling has been proposed to belong to the obsessive-compulsive spectrum of disorders. Disorders on this spectrum are thought to share similar clinical features, neurobiology, and responses to treatment as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. A total of 18 studies were included in a meta-analysis to assess the strength of the association between these disorders. A strong relationship (effect size = 1.01) was found between pathological gambling and obsessive-compulsive traits. A weak relationship was found between pathological gambling and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (.07) and Obsessi

Borderline personality disorder in Trichotillomania and skin picking disorder: a survey study.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity studies in trichotillomania and skin picking disorder (known as Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors, BFRBs) have traditionally not examined rates of borderline personality disorder. When it co-occurs, borderline personality disorder may necessitate different treatment approaches and if untreated may interfere with the response to the treatment for trichotillomania or skin picking disorder. The objectives of this study were to (1) examine the rate of co-occurring borderline personality disorder in BFRBs; and (2) explore associations between co-occurring borderline personal

Childhood trauma and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Childhood trauma is known to predispose to a variety of psychiatric disorders, including mood, anxiety, eating, and personality disorders. However, the relationship between childhood trauma and obsessive-compulsive symptoms has not been well studied. This study examines the relationship between childhood trauma, personality facets, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in 938 college students using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Leyton Obsessional Inventory, and the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised. Between 13 and 30% of subjects met criteria for childhood trauma, with emotional neglect

Compulsive and impulsive symptomatology in trichotillomania.

Although classified as a disorder of impulse control, trichotillomania (hair pulling) may have some phenomenological overlap with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The question arises as to whether trichotillomania is best conceptualized as a disorder characterized by impulsivity or compulsivity. Impulsive and compulsive symptoms and traits were compared in 43 patients who presented for treatment of trichotillomania, OCD or impulsive personality disorder. Trichotillomania patients had significantly lower scores of obsessive-compulsive symptoms than OCD patients, and significantly higher imp

In this paper I will bring some reflections from a post-rationalist constructivist phenomenological perspective on the Obsessive-Compulsive-Prone Style of Personality (tOCD), a style that can typically lead to an Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), but not exclusively so.

Homicidal Ideation and Forensic Psychopathology: Evidence From the 2016 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS).

Homicide is the most serious and costly criminal offense and better forensic and criminological understanding of homicidal ideation as a potential psychobehavioral precursor to homicidal conduct is critical. Using data from the 2016 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) distributed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), we found 64,910 cases of homicidal ideation among a sample of 25.6 + million-a prevalence of 0.25%. Numerous conditions conferred increased substantially the likelihood of homicidal ideation incl

Clinical features and psychiatric comorbidity of subjects with pathological gambling behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Sociodemographic features, phenomenology, and psychiatric comorbidity of 30 subjects reporting pathological gambling behavior were examined. METHODS: Twenty-three men and seven women were recruited by advertisement and word-of-mouth. They all scored higher than 5 points on the South Oaks Gambling Screen, indicating problematic gambling behaviors. They completed structured and semistructured assessments, including the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for DSM-III-R disorders (DIS), the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire, Fourth Revision (PDQ-IV), and the Minnesota Impulsive Disorders

Prevalence and construct validity of compulsive buying disorder in shopping mall visitors.

Compulsive buying is a relatively new psychopathological concept and very few data are currently available regarding the prevalence and validity of compulsive buying disorder. In this cross-sectional study, we establish the prevalence of compulsive buying disorder in shopping mall visitors and explore the construct validity of the concept using the revised version of the Edwards Compulsive Buying Scale in 1441 shopping mall visitors looking at shopping habits, current substance use (smoking, alcohol and illicit drug) and various psychological characteristics. Overall, 8.7% (95% CI: 7.3-10.3) o

Diagnostic Correlates of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Disorder among Veterans with Psychiatric Disorders.

With its recent inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, nonsuicidal self-injury disorder (NSSID) has received limited research attention, especially in samples of military veterans. The present study sought to identify diagnostic predictors of NSSID within a veteran sample. Study participants included 124 veterans with at least one psychiatric diagnosis. Chi-square tests and t-tests evaluated bivariate associations between NSSID and twenty diagnostic correlates. Logistic regression models identified psychiatric disorders that were unique correlates of NSSID among veterans. Veterans

Multiaxial evaluation of violent criminals.

A multiaxial assessment and personality evaluation was performed on a group of 70 people (65 men and 5 women) who were recently incarcerated in Málaga, Spain for having committed violent crimes, such as murder and sex-based violence. Analysis of scores on the MCMI indicated that there were chiefly two clearly differentiated personality profiles related to two personality disorders present in the group, the antisocial and the dependent personality disorder with compulsive traits. The "antisocial-psychotic group" presented a clear relation with clinical syndromes, specifically alcohol and drug a

Personality disorders among subjects recovered from eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Personality disorders are common in symptomatic eating disorders subjects. Because personality symptoms could be exaggerated by malnutrition or Axis I disorders, we studied women who had recovered from eating disorders for at least 1 year to see if personality disorder symptoms persisted in the well state. METHOD: Personality disorders were evaluated in 10 women recovered from anorexia nervosa (AN), 28 women recovered from bulimia nervosa (BN), and 16 women recovered from AN and BN, using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R personality disorders. RESULTS: Fourteen of 5

The relation of major depression, OCD, personality disorders and affective temperaments with Temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: In patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), studies demonstrate frequent comorbidity with mood disorders, personality disorders (especially obsessive-compulsive disorder) and major depression, but there are conflicting findings. This study aimed to investigate psychiatric comorbidities and affective temperament among TLE patients and to explore the relationships between obsessive compulsive disorder, other personality disorders, major depression and affective temperament in order to clarify the mediator effect of TLE in these relationships. METHODS: Thirty patients with TLE and

An autistic dimension: a proposed subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

This article focuses on the possibility that autism spectrum disorder (ASD: Asperger syndrome, autism and atypical autism) in its milder forms may be clinically important among a substantial proportion of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and discusses OCD subtypes based on this proposition. The hypothesis derives from extensive clinical experience of OCD and ASD, and literature searches on MEDLINE. Neuropsychological deficits are more common in OCD than in panic disorder and depression. Moreover, obsessive-compulsive and schizotypal personality disorders are over-represented

Compulsion hysteria.

Compulsion is the most important symptom not only of compulsion diseases but acts as a dynamic element in relatively exceptional form of hysteria, called in this article "compulsion hysteria". Out of three patients observed by the author, one is extensively described. The fundamental structure of these patients is not that of the compulsive personality or of any other form of personality put forward by Rümke in his masterly survey of compulsive syndromes, the classic study called "Clinic and psychopathology of compulsion phenomenons". The basic personality disorder of compulsion hysteria is th

[Liaison between body dysmorphic disorder and eating disorders].

This study presents the cases of anorexia nervosa which began with a body dysmorphic disorder lasting for at least 6 months. In some subjects (25%) there was comorbidity of 3 mental disorders: anancastic personality or obsessive-compulsive disorder + dysmorphophobia + anorexia nervosa or dysmorphophobia + anorexia nervosa + depressive disorder (dysthymia or major depression). The author considers the conception that in some cases dysmorphophobia and anorexia nervosa are a spectre of obsessive-compulsive disorder or affective disorders in adolescents.
