Predicting adult-age mental health with childhood reading and math disability: do resilience and coping styles matter?

We studied the associations between childhood-identified learning disabilities and adult-age mental health and whether adult-age reading and math skills, coping styles, or resilience influenced the associations. The participants were 159 Finnish adults (60.4% males). Of them, 48 (30%) had a reading disability (RD), 22 (14%) had a math disability (MD), 21 (13%) had RD + MD identified in childhood, and 68 (43%) were population-based controls, matched based on gender, age, and place of residence. At ages 20-40 (Mage = 29), they reported their mental health, coping styles, and resilience, and thei

The Effects of Stress Mindset, Manipulated Through Serious Game Intervention, on Performance and Situation Awareness of Elite Female Football Players in the Context of a Match: An Experimental Study.

Background: Performance levels in football are ever more important and no longer are just physical, technical, and tactical skills, the ones that make an athlete stand out. Cognitive variables, such as stress-coping, become more important and seem to be explaining differences in performance, for example, through reaching an optimal level of arousal. In addition, it is suggested that stress-coping skills also affect situation awareness (SA), important for decision-making in the complex and dynamic situations in football. Objective: This study was conducted to examine how stress-coping skills, s

Coping with Fear of and Exposure to Terrorism among Expatriates.

This paper examines existing research on the impact of terrorism on expatriate coping strategies. We consider pre-assignment fear of terrorism, in-country coping strategies, and anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with repatriation. The extant research is small but growing. Our model for expatriate coping at the pre-departure, in-country, and repatriation stages includes strategies specific to each stage. Preparation using proactive coping, systematic desensitization, problem and emotion focused coping, social support, and virtual reality explorations are recommended. S

Association of social skills with psychological distress among female nurses in Japan.

Nursing is a highly stressful occupation. Because nursing work involves interaction with patients and colleagues, competence in social skills may be a key issue in stress management among nurses. However, there are very few studies among nurses focused on social skills together with social support, both of which are important aspects of job stress. The aim of this study was to examine the interrelationships between social skills and social support with job stressors, problem-solving coping, and psychological distress among Japanese nurses. Data from a self-administered questionnaire of 1,197 f

Ask the experts: a practitioner-centred approach to resilience in emergency medical services.

Background: Resilience in high-stress occupations is commonly framed as a trait, an outcome, or the absence of psychopathology. None of these framings captures what practitioners in emergency medical services actually do, and interventions built on trait-based models have produced weak or inconsistent effects. Objective: This study argues that frontline resilience in emergency medical services is better understood as a domain-specific expert skill, and that work mode - a deliberately entered state, akin to an athlete's game face, in which the demands of the task rather than the emotional force

Stressors and coping among esports coaches.

Esports coaches are integral to the development, performance, and overall success of esports players. Sharing the same high-pressure environment, they are likely exposed to similar stressors that can affect not only their effectiveness as coaches but also their personal well-being. Despite their critical role, esports coaches often lack access to structured development programs and support systems. To inform future research enabling tailored intervention strategies for coaches, this study explored the stressors faced by esports coaches and the coping strategies they employ. Drawing on data fro

Riding the time treadmill: An interpretive phenomenological study of clinical nursing interns' experience of time poverty.

BACKGROUND: Time poverty refers to the condition where individuals struggle to secure sufficient free time due to overwhelming responsibilities. This phenomenon has significant physical and mental health implications. Clinical nursing interns are particularly susceptible to time poverty due to demanding schedules, long shifts, and irregular hours during clinical placements. Despite its relevance, limited research explores the subjective experiences of clinical nursing interns regarding time poverty and its implications for their professional development and well-being. AIMS: This study aimed

Experiences of Secondary Emotional Distress: Considerations for Supporting the Research Team.

Emerging evidence suggests that researchers studying sensitive topics are prone to secondary emotional distress, and graduate students and trainees are particularly vulnerable as novice researchers. While many studies account for potential emotional distress in participants of research on sensitive topics, very few include considerations for mitigating emotional harm to researchers. Therefore, this article examines the experiences of graduate research assistants in a study on live discharge from hospice care. Distress stemmed from repeated exposure to sensitive narratives, blurred role boundar

The influence mechanism of mindfulness training on college students' psychological stress regulation: a mediation model with moderating effect.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the impact of mindfulness training on college students' stress regulation ability, building upon the psychological stress issues among undergraduates in the context of universal higher education and intensified employment competition. METHODS: A moderated mediation model was constructed, featuring "mindfulness training → cognitive reappraisal → stress regulation ability," to systematically explore the mechanism of mindfulness training. Using a combination of stratified random sampling and online convenience sampling, 567 valid data were collected. Empirical

Task-based interpretation flexibility predicts real-world emotion regulation variability.

Adapting to daily emotional challenges requires flexibility including flexible interpretations of ambiguous situations and dynamic use of emotion regulation (ER) strategies. Understanding whether flexibility is a domain-general capacity that spans both cognition and emotion regulation has important implications. This study investigated whether baseline interpretation flexibility predicts day-to-day ER variability and affective outcomes using a multimethod design. Participants completed a lab-based Interpretation Inflexibility Task (IIT) to assess flexibility in revising interpretations of ambi

Therapeutic strategies to manage climate distress among young people.

The impact of climate change on mental health is increasingly evident, particularly among young people (16-25 years old), ranging from acute distress after extreme weather events to more persistent feelings of anxiety, grief, and uncertainty regarding the future. This Viewpoint explores how mental health care for young people can be improved to more effectively respond to the psychological impacts of climate change. Rather than proposing a new treatment model, this Viewpoint provides a starting point for clinicians by examining how existing therapeutic approaches could be applied, adapted, or

Clinical Nurses as Second Victims After Patient Safety Incidents: A Meta-Synthesis of Experiences, Coping and Support Needs.

BACKGROUND: In patient safety incidents (PSIs), nurses often act as 'second victims', experiencing multifaceted distress, including psychological, physiological and professional burdens. In recent years, qualitative studies on nurses as second victims have increased; however, the evidence remains fragmented. Existing qualitative meta-syntheses have limitations in terms of contextual diversity, coverage of incident types and exploration of support needs. AIM: To synthesise qualitative evidence on nurses as second victims after PSIs and provide implications for developing a multilevel support s

Are you weary of illness? Coping and existential positioning in life with myasthenia gravis.

This article explores what it means to position oneself existentially in relation to illness weariness in myasthenia gravis. Grounded in phenomenology and informed by autoethnographic principles, the study examines how the body's changing disposition shapes lived meaning and coping in chronic illness. Phenomenological vignettes serve as experiential entry points, followed by reflective interpretation inspired by Havi Carel, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Drew Leder, and Kay Toombs. Two experiential themes emerge. First, When the body doesn't always follow one's lead anymore shows how myasthenia gravis

Addiction across substance use, gambling, and screen: a scoping review of coping strategies adopted by concerned significant others.

BACKGROUND: A loved one's addiction to substance use (alcohol or drugs), gambling, or screen use (e.g. gaming, social media) has significant impact on the quality of life of concerned significant others (CSOs), affecting various aspects of their daily lives. As a result, CSOs implement a range of coping strategies to deal with their loved one's addiction and to try to preserve their personal and family well-being. Several studies have focused on the strategies used by CSOs, but none have provided a comprehensive overview of CSO's experiences of coping across substance use, gambling, or screen-

A meta-analysis of coping strategies and psychological distress in rheumatoid arthritis.

PURPOSE: Theory and research indicate that coping plays a central role in the experience of psychological distress in people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study meta-analysed the associations of adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies with psychological distress in people with RA to quantify and better understand the proposed differential relationships, as well as the factors that might influence these links. METHODS: Searches of four databases identified eligible studies according to a pre-registered protocol. Two random effects meta-analyses examined the direction and magnitude of
