OBJECTIVE: Neurocognitive impairment is often reported in moyamoya disease. We aimed to detect default mode network (DMN) alterations using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and their association with neurocognitive impairments. In addition, the influence of surgical treatment was individually evaluated.
METHODS: Seven patients with moyamoya disease underwent preoperative resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and neuropsychologic tests. We compared the resting-state networks (RSNs) of our patients with those obtained from relatively large cohort datasets (127 h

Major depression is associated with altered static functional connectivity in various brain networks, particularly the default mode network (DMN). Dynamic functional connectivity is a novel tool with little application in affective disorders to date, and holds the potential to unravel fluctuations in connectivity strength over time in major depression. We assessed stability of connectivity in major depression between the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), key nodes in the DMN that are implicated in ruminative cognitions. Functional connectivity stability betw

Numerous neuroimaging studies have implicated default mode network (DMN) involvement in both internally driven processes and memory. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether memory operations reflect a particular case of internally driven processing or alternatively involve the DMN in a distinct manner, possibly depending on memory type. This question is critical for refining neurocognitive memory theorem in the context of other endogenic processes and elucidating the functional significance of this key network. We used functional MRI to examine DMN activity and connectivity patterns while particip

Functional brain imaging studies have shown abnormal neural activity in individuals recovered from anorexia nervosa (AN) during both cognitive and emotional task paradigms. It has been suggested that this abnormal activity which persists into recovery might underpin the neurobiology of the disorder and constitute a neural biomarker for AN. However, no study to date has assessed functional changes in neural networks in the absence of task-induced activity in those recovered from AN. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whole brain resting state functional connectivity in nonmedic

A neurobiological account of cognitive vulnerability for recurrent depression is presented based on recent developments of resting state neural networks. We propose that alterations in the interplay between task positive (TP) and task negative (TN) elements of the Default Mode Network (DMN) act as a neurobiological risk factor for recurrent depression mediated by cognitive mechanisms. In the framework, depression is characterized by an imbalance between TN-TP components leading to an overpowering of TP by TN activity. The TN-TP imbalance is associated with a dysfunctional internally-focused co

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Multiple sclerosis (MS) exhibits racially disparate rates of disease progression. Black people with MS (B-PwMS) experience a more severe disease course than non-Hispanic White people with MS (NHW-PwMS). Here we investigated structural and functional connectivity as well as structure-function decoupling in the sensorimotor and default mode networks (SMN and DMN, respectively), which play a key role in determining physical and cognitive disability in people with MS.
METHODS: A total of 176 participants (50 B-PwMS, 50 NHW-PwMS, 41 Black healthy controls (B-HCs), and 35

Nostalgia is a mixed emotion that is often evoked by music. Nostalgic music may induce temporary improvements in autobiographical memory in individuals with cognitive decline. However, the neural mechanism underlying music-evoked nostalgia and its associated memory improvements is unclear. With the ultimate goal of understanding how nostalgia-evoking music may help retrieve autobiographical memories in individuals with cognitive impairment, we first sought to understand the neural underpinnings of these processes in healthy younger and older adults. Methodological constraints, including the la

Parkinson's disease (PD) has become the second most prominent neurogenerative disorder relating to aging individuals. PD involves the loss of neurons containing dopamine in the midbrain and leads to a number of motor issues as well as non-motor complications such as cognitive and psychological abnormalities. The default mode network (DMN) is a complex brain network primarily active during rest and serves multiple roles relating to memory, self-referential processing, social cognition and consciousness and awareness. Multiple brain regions are involved in the DMN such as the medial prefrontal c

Neuroimaging studies have found both semantic and non-semantic effects in the default mode network (DMN), leading to an intense debate on the role of the DMN in semantic processes. Four different views have been proposed: (1) the general semantic view holds that the DMN contains several hub regions supporting general semantic processes; (2) the non-semantic view holds that the semantic effects observed in the DMN (especially the ventral angular gyrus) are confounded by difficulty and do not reflect semantic processing per se; (3) the multifunction view holds that the same areas in the DMN can

Previous studies of resting state functional connectivity have demonstrated that the default-mode network (DMN) is negatively correlated with a set of brain regions commonly activated during goal-directed tasks. However, the location and extent of anti-correlations are inconsistent across different studies, which has been posited to result largely from differences in whether or not global signal regression (GSR) was applied as a pre-processing step. Notably, coordinates of seed regions-of-interest defined within the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC)/precuneus, an area often employed to study fu

Internet addiction (IA) is a condition characterized by loss of control over Internet use, leading to a variety of negative psychosocial consequences. Recent neuroimaging studies have begun to identify IA-related changes in specific brain regions and connections. However, whether and how the interactions within and between the large-scale brain networks are disrupted in individuals with IA remain largely unexplored. Using group independent component analysis, we extracted five intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs) from the resting-state fMRI data of 26 adolescents with IA and 43 controls, inc

Existing evidence suggests that the default-mode network (DMN) and fronto-pariatal network (FPN) play an important role in altered states of consciousness. However, the brain mechanisms underlying impaired consciousness and the specific network interactions involved are not well understood. We studied the topological properties of brain functional networks using resting-state functional MRI data acquired from 18 patients (11 vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome, VS/UWS, and 7 minimally conscious state, MCS) and compared these properties with those of healthy controls. We identifi

The experiences induced by psychedelics share a wide variety of subjective features, related to the complex changes in perception and cognition induced by this class of drugs. A remarkable increase in introspection is at the core of these altered states of consciousness. Self-oriented mental activity has been consistently linked to the Default Mode Network (DMN), a set of brain regions more active during rest than during the execution of a goal-directed task. Here we used fMRI technique to inspect the DMN during the psychedelic state induced by Ayahuasca in ten experienced subjects. Ayahuasca

BACKGROUND: The thalamus plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of adolescent depression, with its subregions showing functional heterogeneity. Abnormalities in the default mode (DMN) and frontoparietal networks (FPN) are associated with depressive symptoms, and both networks are closely coupled with the thalamus. This study examined, at a finer granularity, functional connectivity (FC) changes between thalamic subregions and these networks in depressed adolescents, aiming to reveal underlying mechanisms and explore their potential as diagnostic biomarkers.
METHOD: This study included 64

OBJECTIVE: Brain default mode network (DMN) function is altered in schizophrenia (SZ). Considering the roles of nitrergic and glutamatergic transmission in SZ neurobiology, supplementation with nitric oxide (NO) donors such as sodium nitroprusside (SNP) has been proposed as a means of reducing symptoms, but results have been mixed and potential mechanisms remain unclear. In this context, we sought to investigate the effects of SNP on DMN functional connectivity (FC) assessed by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in SZ patients and healthy controls.
METHODS: In an open-label trial, p

Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been demonstrated to be associated with changes in resting-state functional connectivity of the default-mode network (DMN) across various mental disorders. Growing evidence regarding severity of CM is available but transdiagnostic research considering the role of both severity and duration of CM for DMN connectivity at rest is still scarce. We recruited a sample of participants with varying levels of CM suffering from three disorders in which a history of CM is frequently found, namely, post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, or somatic sympto

The study of patients after glioma resection offers a unique opportunity to investigate brain reorganization. It is currently unknown how the whole-brain connectomic profile evolves longitudinally after surgical resection of a glioma and how this may be associated with tumor characteristics and cognitive outcome. In this longitudinal study, we investigate the impact of tumor lateralization and grade on functional connectivity (FC) in highly connected networks, or hubs, and cognitive performance. Twenty-eight patients (17 high-grade, 11 low-grade gliomas) underwent longitudinal pre/post-surgery

Our brains at rest spontaneously replay recently acquired information, but how this process is orchestrated to avoid interference with ongoing cognition is an open question. Here we investigated whether replay coincided with spontaneous patterns of whole-brain activity. We found, in two separate datasets, that replay sequences were packaged into transient bursts occurring selectively during activation of the default mode network (DMN) and parietal alpha networks. These networks are believed to support inwardly oriented attention and inhibit bottom-up sensory processing and were characterized b

OBJECTIVE: The functional connectivity of the brain in chronic pancreatitis (CP) remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate functional connectivity in CP patients using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and explore the associations to clinical parameters and altered cerebral metabolites.
METHODS: Seed-based and ROI-to-ROI analyses were performed to assess connectivity within and between the default mode network (DMN) and salience network (SN). Additionally, functional connectivity in these networks were investigated in relation to clinical parameters (CP etiolog
