Relationship between work-related musculoskeletal symptoms and burnout symptoms among preclinical and clinical dental students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The demanding nature of dental education exposes students to a high risk of burnout symptoms, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Similarly, work-related musculoskeletal symptoms are prevalent among dental students, posing significant occupational health challenges. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between work-related musculoskeletal symptoms and burnout symptoms among preclinical and clinical dental students. METHODS: A total of 248 dental students participated in this cross-sectional study, and a three-part

HIV health-care providers' burnout: can organizational culture make a difference?

One of the major challenges facing those working with people living with HIV (PLWH) is the increased potential for burnout, which results in increased turnover and reduces quality of care provided for PLWH. The goal of this study was to examine the relationship among HIV health-care providers' burnout (emotional exhaustion and depersonalization) and organizational culture including teamwork, involvement in decision-making, and critical appraisal. Health-care providers for PLWH (N = 47) in federally funded clinics in a southwestern state completed a cross-sectional survey questionnaire about th

Dissociative disorders.

The dissociative disorders, including "psychogenic" or "functional" amnesia, fugue, dissociative identity disorder (DID, also known as multiple personality disorder), and depersonalization disorder, were once classified, along with conversion disorder, as forms of hysteria. The 1970s witnessed an "epidemic" of dissociative disorder, particularly DID, which may have reflected enthusiasm for the diagnosis more than its actual prevalence. Traditionally, the dissociative disorders have been attributed to trauma and other psychological stress, but the existing evidence favoring this hypothesis is p

Dissociative subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder or PTSD with comorbid dissociative disorders: Comparative evaluation of clinical profiles.

INTRODUCTION: The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) introduced a dissociative subtype for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depersonalization and/or derealization symptoms. Despite high comorbidity rates between PTSD and dissociative disorders (DDs), research has not paid attention to the differentiation or overlap between the dissociative subtype of PTSD and DDs. This raises a question: To what extent do patients with dissociative PTSD differ from patients with PTSD and comorbid DDs? METHOD

COVID-19 Exposure Risk, Burnout, and Shifts in Family Medicine Faculty's Efforts: A National Survey.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, academic family physicians had to change their clinical, teaching, research, and administrative efforts, while simultaneously balancing their home environment demands. It is unclear how the changes in effort affected physicians' personal well-being, particularly burnout. This study sought to identify changes in faculty's clinical, teaching, research, and administrative efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic and how effort shifts were associated with burnout. We also examined associations with important demographics and burnout. ME

'Are these my thoughts?': A 20-year prospective study of thought insertion, thought withdrawal, thought broadcasting, and their relationship to auditory verbal hallucinations.

The co-occurrence of delusions and other symptoms at the onset of psychosis is a challenge for theories about the aetiology of psychosis. This paper explores the relatedness of delusions about the experience of thinking (thought insertion, thought withdrawal, and thought broadcasting) and auditory verbal hallucinations by describing their trajectories over a 20-year period in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, affective and other psychosis, and unipolar depression nonpsychosis. The sample consisted of 407 participants who were recruited at index hospitalization and evaluated over six fo

Wellness Principles Correlate With More Favorable Burnout Scores in Junior Anesthesiology Residents.

BACKGROUND: Strategies to prevent or reduce burnout for anesthesiology residents remain relatively unexplored. We aimed to determine if participation in a wellness course would be associated with lower burnout. METHODS: A prospective, case-control survey/questionnaire study was implemented within a single anesthesiology residency in a large academic medical center program. One class participated in an inaugural wellness course (n = 15) promoting particular wellness principles 4 months into their postgraduate year (PGY)-1, while another class with no course participation served as controls (n

Assessing Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners in the Upstate of South Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) provide trauma-informed care to victims of sexual assault. Repeated exposure to trauma places SANEs at risk for burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS), which may negatively impact SANE availability. AIM: To examine burnout and STS among SANEs and their potential impact on workforce sustainability. METHODS: SANEs in the Upstate of South Carolina completed a cross-sectional survey including a demographic and occupational questionnaire, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel, and the Secondary Traumatic

Self-reports of trauma and dissociation: An examination of context effects.

To examine context effects in moderating the link between self-reported trauma and dissociation in undergraduate samples, we administered these measures either in the same or different experimental contexts. Trauma History Screen/THS (Carlson et al., 2011)-Dissociative Experiences Scale/DES-II (Bernstein & Putnam, 1986) correlations revealed a context effect (greater correlations in same test context), although multiple regression analyses did not confirm this finding. A context effect was supported in DES-Taxon scores using multiple regression for the THS but not the Modified Posttraumatic St

Dissociative disorders in DSM-5.

The rationale, research literature, and proposed changes to the dissociative disorders and conversion disorder in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) are presented. Dissociative identity disorder will include reference to possession as well as identity fragmentation, to make the disorder more applicable to culturally diverse situations. Dissociative amnesia will include dissociative fugue as a subtype, since fugue is a rare disorder that always involves amnesia but does not always include confused wandering or loss of personality identity. Professional depression, 'burnout' and personality in longstay nursing.

Conceptualizations of 'burnout' vary between authors. Some descriptions of burnout show strong similarities to depression in the work setting, or 'professional depression' as described by Oswin [Children Living in Long Stay Hospitals, 1978. Heinemann, London]. This study supported such a similarity, and demonstrated a considerable extent of depressed mood amongst nursing staff in longstay settings, which was particularly significant amongst male staff. A number of distinct 'burnout' responses were evident amongst staff including not only 'professional depression' and depersonalization but also

The Role of Occupational Coping Self-Efficacy in Determining the Effectiveness of Social Sharing Following Patient Aggression: A Longitudinal Study Among Healthcare Workers.

Workplace aggression against medical staff is widely recognized as a major threat to employees' health and well-being, yet evidence regarding the long-term effects of nonphysical aggression, the most common form of aggression perpetrated by patients or visitors, is scarce. The present study aimed to test the longitudinal relationships between nonphysical aggression and employees' burnout and turnover intention and examine the joint effect of social sharing and occupational coping self-efficacy (OCSE) in these relationships. A sample of 274 healthcare employees completed online self-reported qu

Comparative effectiveness of individual-level psychosocial interventions for nurse burnout and its core dimensions: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nurses face heavy workloads, emotional labor, and frequent shift work, contributing to physical and mental stress. This stress leads to burnout, negatively impacting their health and the quality of patient care. Effective interventions are essential to mitigate nurse burnout, but the relative efficacy of these strategies remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study systematically evaluates the relative efficacy of different interventions in alleviating nurse burnout and its core dimensions-emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement. METHODS: A comprehensive searc

Religious Officials with Voice Disorders and Burnout: A Comparative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Voice disorders are a major occupational health concern among professionals whose work depends on continuous and efficient voice use. Religious officials are particularly at risk due to the phonatory demands of religious rituals, prolonged speaking durations, and emotionally intensive communication. Moreover, burnout may influence the onset and persistence of voice disorders. Understanding the relationship between voice-related handicap and burnout in religious officials is therefore essential for developing effective preventive and rehabilitative strategies. PURPOSE: This study a

Appraisal, Burnout, and Caregiving in Dyads Living With Chronic Illness: A Dyad-Informed Analysis of Informal Care.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers play a central role in supporting adults living with chronic illness, particularly in contexts where family caregiving is culturally expected and formal support is limited. However, the extent to which caregiver burnout is associated with caregiving appraisal, psychological symptoms, and dyad-informed relational characteristics remains insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: To examine caregiver burnout among informal caregivers of adults living with chronic illness and to identify associations between burnout and caregiving appraisal, psychological symptoms, car
