Paternal-maternal congruence in emotional abuse and adolescent depressive symptoms: A moderated polynomial regression with response surface analyses.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depressive symptoms are a significant concern around the world. Existing research has found that parental emotional abuse is an important risk factor for adolescent depressive symptoms. However, these studies typically treated parental emotional abuse as a whole, without distinguishing differential effects of paternal and maternal emotional abuse. Thus, this conceptual and empirical work was designed to explore the unique and joint effects of paternal and maternal emotional abuse on adolescent depressive symptoms. Moreover, we further explored whether this relation could

The fathering of violent men: constriction and yearning.

The study presented in this research note aims to expand our understanding of the experience of fathering for men who are violent toward their partners. The naturalistic qualitative methodology applied was shaped by phenomenological, feminist, and interpretative interactionist influences. In-depth interviews were conducted with 14 abusive men identified through domestic violence intervention centers. The findings describe the drama of fathering for abusive men, centered on an inner dialogue between an experienced constriction and a yearning for a closer, deeper connection with their children.

Parental reports of stress and anxiety in their migrant children in China: The mediating role of parental psychological aggression and corporal punishment.

BACKGROUND: Both ecological system theory and developmental contextualism framework have pointed out that family is one of the most direct microsystem environmental factors affecting children adjustment, especially for migrant children. As two major family microsystem factors, parenting stress and harsh discipline may be closely related to migrant children's anxiety. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the predictive effects of both mothers' and fathers' parenting stress on Chinese migrant children's anxiety one year later in the single model and the mediating role of mothers' and fathers' harsh d

Fathers' Childcare Success and Maternal Parenting Stress: A Comparative Study of Families With and Without Children Having Neurodevelopmental Disabilities.

Paternal engagement has been described as a relational process that redistributes caregiving responsibilities and strengthens family resilience and function. This study investigated the association between fathers' childcare success and maternal parenting stress by comparing families raising children with neurodevelopmental disabilities (ND) with those raising typically developing (TD) children. Fifty-three fathers of children with ND and 206 fathers of TD children completed online surveys on parenting self-efficacy, childcare knowledge, involvement, communication with their spouse, and percei

Engaging Latino Fathers in Children's Eating and Other Obesity-Related Behaviors: a Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There is a growing evidence of the important role that fathers play in influencing their children's eating and other weight-related behaviors. Latino children are at high risk for obesity and associated medical conditions. Engaging Latino fathers is a potentially important and unique way to help promote healthy lifestyles for Latino children, but doing so requires a culturally sensitive understanding both of fathers' current role and the family perceptions of this role. RECENT FINDINGS: Here, we review recent data and argue that there are subtle but important differences be

Concordance of Fathers and Mothers in the Assessment of Their 5-Year-Old Child's Dental Fear.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the concordance of parents' assessments of their child's dental fear. Cross-sectional secondary analysis used data from the multidisciplinary FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study. Child dental fear was assessed at age 5 with the Finnish translation of the modified Children's Fear Survey Schedule Dental Subscale (CFSS-M) by both fathers (n = 588) and mothers (n = 1100). Reply alternatives were from 1 = not afraid to 5 = very afraid and 6 = no experience coded as missing and 1. In total, 514 mother-father pairs were eligible for the analyses. Descriptive statistics,

Determinants of expressed emotion in families of disturbed and normal children.

Both high expressed emotion (EE) and psychiatric disorders were frequent in the parents of children and adolescents with disruptive behavior disorder (DBD, N = 34) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD, N = 49) compared to normal controls (NC, N = 41). Parental psychiatric diagnosis was significantly related to high-EE in fathers (p = .0002) and mothers (p = .0001) of all groups combined, and in parents of the ill groups (p = .03). Absence of diagnosis was associated with low-EE in fathers (p = .0006) and mothers (p = .04) of the controls. Psychiatric diagnosis was the only significant predic

Fathers' experiences singing to their infants: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Infant-directed singing (ID singing) is a powerful phenomenon with well-established clinical applications for infants and parents. Existing research, however, focuses primarily on mothers, leaving a critical gap in the literature. METHODS: This study explores fathers' experiences singing with their infants, specifically examining how fathers engage in and perceive singing to their infant; the factors that influence fathers' singing; and how, if at all, singing influences father-infant bonding. Semi-structured interviews with thirteen fathers were analyzed using Interpretative Phen

Oxytocin moderates father-infant dynamics during triadic family interaction: A dynamic structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Touch is a primary way parents communicate and bond with infants. Oxytocin, a neuropeptide that promotes bonding and regulates social responsiveness, may shape how parents touch their infants. However, most research has focused on maternal touch in dyadic interactions, leaving fathers and triadic family processes understudied. This study examined second-by-second links between parental touch and infant affect during triadic play with mothers, fathers, and infants. METHODS: Sixty-nine families from a longitudinal transition-to-parenthood study were observed during a four-minute tri

[Paternal postpartum depression: Why is it also important?].

Health supervision is a privileged opportunity to walk along with the new families during their transition to parenthood. This period is challenging for both mother and father, and there is the potential danger that demand surpasses the existing resources of the family. This imbalance may lead to mothers and fathers to develop depressive symptomatology. Postpartum depression may affect one to two out of ten men, and maternal depression is a major risk factor for developing it. The postpartum depression in the father impact all the family members, being the child development, the bonding, and t

Effects of social class differences and social mobility on growth in height, weight and body mass index in a British cohort.

By longitudinally linking follow-up restudies of the National Child Development Study it has been possible to examine not only the well-known association of social class with the size of the child, but also with longitudinal growth, and, in addition the effect of social mobility on growth. The relation of type of occupation of the male head of household to height and weight of the child is seen at all ages (7, 11 and 16) but class influence on growth from 7 years onward is minimal. Social mobility is a significant factor especially in relation to stature but is not significantly related to gro

Methamphetamine-using parents: the relationship between parental role strain and depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: The methamphetamine epidemic in the United States involves a large number of men and women with dependent-age children. However, we know little about the parenting strains experienced by methamphetamine-using mothers and fathers and the relationship of these parenting strains to mental health outcomes, specifically depressive symptoms. METHOD: The primary goal of this study was to examine five dimensions of parental role strain in relation to depressive symptoms in a sample of 180 methamphetamine-using parents of dependent-age children in San Diego, CA. Dimensions of parental role

Gates of hardened steel: Bruce Springsteen's Mansion on the Hill and the father-son relationship.

This essay contributes to the medical humanities by using Bruce Springsteen's 1982 song 'Mansion on the Hill' from his album Nebraska to interrogate the clinical aetiology of the 'paternal void' and generational emotional inheritance. Grounded in rigorous psychoanalytical scholarship, the analysis synthesises the relational theories of D W Winnicott and more contemporary advances by Jessica Benjamin, Christopher Bollas and André Green to decode the song's architectural and narrative metaphors. The distant, hardened steel gates of the mansion represent the emotional distance of the father rather

Broken bonds: A meta-analysis of emotion reactivity and regulation in emotionally maltreating parents.

BACKGROUND: Emotional maltreatment is the most pervasive but least studied form of abuse. OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we examined the role of emotion reactivity and emotion regulation in emotional child maltreatment. METHODS: We identified nine studies that compared levels of parental emotion reactivity and regulation in emotionally maltreating families with levels in non-maltreating families. RESULTS: Our meta-analytic findings revealed that, in comparison to non-maltreating parents, parents who are emotionally maltreating their children report higher levels of negative affect, depres

Role of psychosocial risk factors in predicting maternal and paternal depressive symptomatology during pregnancy.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of several psychosocial risk factors in predicting depressive symptomatology during pregnancy in mothers and fathers, respectively. A total of 146 primiparous mothers and 105 primiparous fathers reporting a psychosocial risk condition were recruited independently from maternity and child health services, during the second trimester of pregnancy. All parents were evaluated for depressive symptomatology, anxiety, and perceived social support. Two hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed to determine the role of psychosocial

Parenting and children's cardiovascular functioning.

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that more supportive/less negative parenting is associated with lower resting blood pressure and heart rates in children and to determine whether parent and/or child gender and developmental stage moderate the relations in question. DESIGN: Longitudinal data on 835 children/families who participated in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development were analysed. Children (one per family) were followed from age 1 month to 11 years. METHODS: Data were collected from children and their families via

Fathers in Jail and their Minor Children: Paternal Characteristics and Associations with Father-Child Contact.

OBJECTIVES: More than five million children have experienced a co-resident parent leaving to spend time behind bars. Most incarceration occurs in jails, yet little is known about contact between parents in jail and their minor children. Such information is essential to inform programming and policy to support families in the context of incarceration. METHODS: In the present study, 315 fathers in jail with minor children (3-17 years old) were recruited from four jails in the Midwest region of the United States. Fathers in jail reported their demographic information, incarceration-related chara

Major cardiovascular events and death in parents of children with type 1 diabetes: a register-based matched cohort study in Sweden.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Parenting a child with type 1 diabetes has been associated with stress-related symptoms. This study aimed to elucidate the potential impact on parental risk of major cardiovascular events (MCE) and death. METHODS: In this register-based study, we included the parents of 18,871 children, born 1987-2020 and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in Sweden at <18 years. The median parental age at the child's diagnosis was 39.0 and 41.0 years for mothers and fathers, respectively. The cohort also encompassed 714,970 population-based matched parental control participants and 12,497 parent

Severe eczema vaccinatum in a household contact of a smallpox vaccinee.

BACKGROUND: We report the first confirmed case of eczema vaccinatum in the United States related to smallpox vaccination since routine vaccination was discontinued in 1972. A 28-month-old child with refractory atopic dermatitis developed eczema vaccinatum after exposure to his father, a member of the US military who had recently received smallpox vaccine. The father had a history of inactive eczema but reportedly reacted normally to the vaccine. The child's mother also developed contact vaccinia infection. METHODS: Treatment of the child included vaccinia immune globulin administered intraven
