Estimated fetal weight at mid-gestation in prediction of pre-eclampsia in singleton pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the distribution of birth weight according to gestational age in pregnancies complicated by pre-eclampsia (PE) and assess the potential value of sonographic estimated fetal weight (EFW) at mid-gestation as a predictor of PE. METHODS: The data for this study were derived from prospective screening for adverse obstetric outcome in 93 911 women with a singleton pregnancy attending for routine pregnancy care at 19 + 0 to 24 + 6 weeks' gestation in two UK maternity hospitals. This visit included recording of maternal demographic characteristics and medical history, sonographi

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the fetal brain in intrauterine growth restriction.

OBJECTIVE: Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) is a sensitive method for assessing brain maturation and detecting brain lesions, providing apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values as a measure of water diffusion. Abnormal ADC values are seen in ischemic brain lesions, such as those associated with acute or chronic hypoxia. The aim of this study was to assess whether ADC values in the fetal brain were different in fetuses with severe intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) compared with normal controls. METHODS: Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with single-shot axial DW

Timing of Gestational Weight Gain on Fetal Growth and Infant Size at Birth in Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the importance of timing of gestational weight gain during three time periods: 1: ≤ 20 weeks gestation), 2: 21-29 weeks) and 3: ≥ 30 weeks) on fetal growth and infant birth size. METHODS: Study uses secondary data from the PRECONCEPT randomized controlled trial in Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam (n = 1436). Prospective data were collected on women starting pre-pregnancy through delivery. Maternal conditional weight gain (CWG) was defined as window-specific weight gains, uncorrelated with pre-pregnancy body mass index and all prior body weights. Fetal biometry, was assessed

Influence of fetal body weight on metabolic complications in adult life: review of the evidence.

Numerous mainly cross-sectional studies have unequivocally shown an inverse relationship between birth weight of infants born at term and the incidence of impaired glucose tolerance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, hypertension and coronary heart disease. These findings apply to both sexes and are not modified by confounding factors such as age or body mass index. Although the original studies in the UK involved a relatively small number of subjects whose records of birth weight were traced back more than 50 years earlier, similar findings were recorded from larger prospective st

Accuracy and modifying factors of the sonographic estimation of fetal weight in a high-risk population.

There have been a number of reviews assessing the accuracy of different methods of sonographic estimation of fetal weight, without identifying any clearly superior equation. In order to optimise accuracy in a high-risk population, we decided to compare some of the most popular early equations with the newer volume-based equations, and to try and identify factors that affect the ability of these equations to estimate fetal weight accurately We collected the scan and delivery details of 192 fetuses born within one week of a sonographic estimation of fetal weight. We then applied three of the mos

Effects of maternal acetazolamide treatment on body weights and incisor development of the fetal rat.

The incisor development of fetal rats on gestation day 19 was well correlated with their fetal weights. The number of odontoblasts in the mandibular incisors, an index of incisor development, increased more than that of the maxillary incisors with increase in fetal body weights. Maternal acetazolamide treatments were observed to suppress the mean fetal weight and to retard incisor development. A smaller incisor size, a thinner predentin layer, and fewer odontoblasts were characteristic of the acetazolamide group. There was also a good correlation between the fetal weights and the number of odo

Glycosylated fetal hemoglobin. Correlation with hyperglycemia and birth weight in infants of diabetic mothers.

Glycosylated fetal hemoglobin levels were measured in umbilical cord blood of normal infants and infants of diabetic mothers. The glycosylated fraction proved to be a stable compound; its level remained unchanged over a 19-day period. Exposure of fetal and adult hemoglobins to the same concentrations of glucose in vitro resulted in similar levels of glycosylated hemoglobins, suggesting that both types of hemoglobin are about equally reactive with glucose. Levels of glycosylated hemoglobin were significantly increased above normal in umbilical cord blood of infants of both Class A and Class B d

Effects of gestational weight gain and HbA1C on fetal growth and birthweight in women with obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal growth and birthweight are influenced by various endogenous and exogenous factors during pregnancy. Pregnant women with obesity face higher rates of complications, which can impact fetal growth. This study aims to explore how gestational weight gain and metabolic factors, such as HbA1C and adipokines, are associated with fetal growth in the second and third trimesters and with birthweight in Norwegian women with a pregestational BMI ≥35 kg/m2. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective longitudinal cohort study at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Dramme

Sonographic fetal weight estimation percentiles should be interpreted with caution in the second trimester.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the limitations of sonographic estimation of fetal weight (EFW) percentiles during the second trimester; compare the accuracy of EFW percentiles to that of single fetal biometric indice; and identify the gestational age threshold beyond which the sonographic diagnosis of fetal growth restriction (FGR) becomes more reliable. METHODS: We described the limitations of EFW by simulation using the 1991 Hadlock. Then, we illustrated these limitations using data from a cohort of singleton pregnancies at a single tertiary center (2014-2023). The primary predictor was EFW percent

Comparing Fetal Ultrasound Biometric Measurements to Neonatal Anthropometry at the Extremes of Birth Weight.

OBJECTIVE: Error in birthweight prediction by sonographic estimated fetal weight (EFW) has clinical implications, such as avoidable cesarean or misclassification of fetal risk in labor. We aimed to evaluate optimal timing of ultrasound and which fetal measurements contribute to error in fetal ultrasound estimations of birth size at the extremes of birthweight. STUDY DESIGN: We compared differences in head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length, and EFW between ultrasound and corresponding birth measurements within 14 (n = 1,290) and 7 (n = 617) days of birth for small-

Placental weight and size in relation to fetal growth restriction: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Reductions in placental weight and size have been associated with reduced fetal growth. However, few studies have examined the association of placental weight and size with the risk of fetal growth restriction (FGR). METHODS: We enrolled 121 mother-newborn pairs, including 54 FGR cases and 67 healthy controls, from our previous case-control study. The weight, surface area, and thickness of the placenta were measured by medical professionals. RESULTS: Reduced placental weight and surface area were found to be associated with decreased birth weight. A 10-unit decrement in placental

Accuracy of sonographic fetal weight estimation prior to delivery in a Chinese han population.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the sonographic-estimated fetal weights (EFW) calculated with the Hadlock formula and with the Woo formula in a group of Chinese pregnant women. METHODS: We prospectively recruited term pregnancies for sonographic biometric examination. EFWs were calculated according to two formulas and compared with the corresponding birth weight (BW). We also assessed the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of EFW for the diagnosis of small-for-gestational age (SGA) and large-for-gestational age (LGA) neonates. RESULTS: A tota
