Firearm sexual homicide offenders: Criminal careers, psychopathology, and offense conduct.

Most homicides are firearm-perpetrated, but in sexual homicide, offenders are more likely to utilize personal weapons (e.g., hands and feet), contact weapons (e.g., blunt object), or edged weapons (e.g., knife) to comport with their fantasy life, motivational states, and psychopathology. Despite these conceptual designations, epidemiological data suggest roughly 17% to 31% of sexual homicide offenders kill their victim with a firearm, yet we know surprisingly little about these offenders' criminal careers, psychopathology, and offense conduct. Drawing on a near-census of condemned capital murd

The scattering of violence: A review of the global epidemiology and characteristics of maxillofacial firearm wounds.

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial surgery frequently faces the permanent and catastrophic impacts of firearm injuries, an alarming scenario due to rising mortality and morbidity rates, representing both global and individual losses. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study was to outline and synthesize the epidemiological profile and trends in the global incidence of firearm-related maxillofacial injuries. METHODS: A scoping systematic review was conducted, including observational studies, case series, and case reports published up to September 2025, retrieved from PubMed and Google Scholar, usi

Firearm violence victimization in the United States: do drug preferences matter?

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether primary drug of choice is associated with risk of being injured or threatened by a gun. METHODS: The sample included 401 Medicaid-eligible adults receiving addiction treatment services in the Midwest United States who completed life-course history surveys between 2021 and 2023 as part of the Removing Barriers to Recovery randomized controlled trial. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Bivariate analyses showed marginally and statistically significant differences in firearm victimization risk between individuals identifying alcoh

Racialized economic segregation and youth firearm carriage: community violence as a mediator.

Firearm carriage poses a significant public health challenge, especially for youth (ages 14-24) living in predominantly Black communities that endured racial and economic segregation. Structural racism is a determinant of fatal and nonfatal firearm assaults, but the influence of structural racism on youth firearm carriage has received limited attention. Our study examines whether community violence exposure mediates the association between racialized economic segregation and youth firearm carriage. We analyzed data among 599 youths who sought emergency care and reported drug use within the pas

Childhood victimization and young adult firearm violence and self-harm ideation.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of childhood adversity impact broader society. Understanding the linkage between patterns of childhood victimization, specifically, and risks associated with young adult firearm violence is critical to public discourse regarding relative investments in child safety. METHODS: In a nationally representative sample of U.S. young adults (n = 4121), we conducted latent class analyses to model patterns of childhood victimization. We then estimated how the latent classes of childhood victimization patterns are related to adulthood firearm violence perpetration (inclusive

A Qualitative Scoping Review of Community Firearm Violence in Low-Income Settings.

Firearm violence is a public health crisis in the United States that disproportionately impacts community members in low-income areas who witness and experience violence and violent victimization at elevated rates compared to other socioeconomic groups, often as result of community disinvestment and systemic racism (Smith et al., Soc Sci Med 246:112587, 2020). While quantitative reviews of firearm violence and related factors exist, a review of qualitative methods and findings regarding exposure to firearm violence has not yet been conducted. This scoping review sought to address a gap in the

Female Victims of Firearm Intimate Partner Violence: Characterization and Lethality Predictors.

Objective: To characterize the sociological risk factors for firearm intimate partner violence (IPV) among women in Texas, with a focus on lethal predictors to aid in screening and intervention guidelines. Methods: A retrospective medical and forensic chart review was conducted and supplemented by news sources, public police reports, and court records on firearm cases in Houston, TX, from 2018 to 2020. IPV was defined as a cis-gendered female victim of firearm violence from a current or ex-intimate partner. Non-IPV was defined as cis-gendered female victims of firearm violence from strangers,

Firearm Injuries in Young Children: Surgical Resource Utilization and Implications for Prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric firearm injury prevention research in younger age groups is limited. This study evaluated a large multicenter cohort of younger children with firearm injuries, focusing on injury patterns and surgical resource utilization. METHODS: Children ≤15 y old sustaining firearm injuries between 2016 and 2021 and treated at 10 pediatric trauma centers in Florida were included. Individual cases were reviewed for demographics, shooting details, injury patterns, resource utilization, and outcomes. Patients were grouped by age into preschool (0-5 y), elementary school (6-10 y), midd

Timing of surgical intervention after firearm-related spinal cord injury.

CONTEXT: Surgical management of firearm-related spinal cord injury (SCI) remains controversial, and there are no clear guidelines. Time to surgery, surgical indications, and patient characteristics on initial presentation in this group are not well understood, and these factors may impact the potential for neurologic recovery after operative intervention. OBJECTIVE: To understand the timing and factors affecting the timing of operative intervention after firearm-related SCI. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, patients with traumatic SCI from July 2012 to July 2022 (n = 1569) were iden

Ballistic lobar trajectory outcomes in civilian firearm penetrating brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Penetrating brain injury (PBI) is the most lethal of all firearm injuries, with reported survival rates of less than 20%. The projectile trajectory (PT) has been shown to impact mortality, but the significant lobar tracks have not been defined. The aim of this retrospective case-control study was to test for associations between distinct ballistic trajectories, missile types, and patient outcomes. METHODS: A total of 243 patients who presented with a PBI to the Saint Louis University emergency department from 2008 through 2019 were identified from the hospital registry. Conventiona

METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample was queried from 1993 to 2014 for all firearm injuries. International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision codes were used to identify firearm injuries and those who also underwent a vascular repair. An unusual case of unintentional firearm death of a 3-year-old child.

The authors report the case of an accidental death of a 3-year-old child who unintentionally shot himself while he was handling his father's handgun. The peculiarity of the observed injury makes the case particularly interesting, along with the fact that, in Italy, unintentional firearm-related deaths are rather uncommon among children and adolescents.Because of the presence of only 1 bullet hole on the parietal-occipital region, radiological cranial examinations were performed before proceeding with the autopsy.Computed tomographic scans were useful to confirm the entrance site of the bullet a

The study objective was to describe the incidence trends and nature of firearm-related injury hospitalizations in Finland between 1990 and 2003. METHODS: We included all firearm-related injury hospitalizations between 1990 and 2003. The data were obtained from the Finnish National Hospital Discharge Register. Only events with traumatic physical injuries were included. RESULTS: The overall incidence of firearm-related injury hospitalization was 5.1 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 34.5-5.7) per 100,000 person-
