BACKGROUND: Silver-based therapies are effective in preventing caries but often cause undesirable tooth staining. This study aimed to develop a dual-action nanosilver-fluoride (NSF) formulation that arrests caries while minimizing discolouration. METHODS: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized via chemical reduction and characterized using transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. Various AgNP concentrations (0–150 µg/mL) were evaluated for their ability to inhibit Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation using a colorimetric assay, while bacterial viability within es

BACKGROUND: Patients with White spot lesions (WSLs) are seeking minimally invasive remineralizing treatment. While fluoride is the gold standard of non-invasive caries therapy, its remineralizing impact is predominantly superficial. MI Paste One (MIP-1) combines casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) with 1100 ppm fluoride. This in vitro study aimed to assess the effect of MIP-1 compared with other agents.
METHODS: Enamel slabs were demineralized to create a caries-like lesion and randomized into five groups (n = 10): G1, WSL/artificial saliva (AS) (negative control); G2,

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a highly effective topical fluoride for halting dental caries; however, it darkens both teeth and restorations. Therefore, it is of interest to assess the shear bond strength (SBS) of glass ionomer cement (GIC) to caries-affected dentin treated with SDF alone and SDF followed by KI. Forty primary molar samples were prepared to reveal a flat dentin surface and were randomly assigned to two groups. In group A, the dentin surfaces were pre-treated with 38% SDF, while in group B, the dentin was treated first with SDF and then with KI before being restored with GIC.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the calcium fluoride uptake by human enamel in situ after topical application using three fluoridated mouthrinses: a neutral pH solution (Fluordent), an acidulated solution (Fluorgard) and a solution associated with chlorhexidine (Duplak). Twenty-four samples from 6 third sound human molars were divided into two groups: 5-min treatment and 10-min treatment. In both the 5-min and 10-min treatment samples, those treated with the chlorhexidine-associated solution showed higher formation of CaF2-like material. In the

OBJECTIVES: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) is a prevalent, irreversible condition; however, despite the availability of numerous anti-erosive dentifrices, heterogeneity among systematic reviews limits clear clinical guidance. This umbrella review synthesizes and critically appraises the highest-level secondary evidence on the effectiveness of anti-erosive dentifrices on enamel and dentin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses was conducted following PRISMA 2020 and Joanna Briggs Institute guidance. Searches were performed in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of

This in vitro study evaluated the anti-erosive effect of an experimental varnish containing 5% stannous chloride (SnCl₂) associated with different concentrations of NaF (NaF-free, 2.5% NaF, or 5.2% NaF) on bovine enamel and root dentin. One hundred samples were pre-eroded (0.3% citric acid, pH 2.6, 10 min) and randomized into five groups (n=10 for each substrate): Negative control - milli-Q water; NaF-free - Experimental varnish SnCl₂-free and NaF-free; 2.5 NaF - Experimental varnish 5% SnCl₂ associated with 2.5% NaF; 5.2 NaF: Experimental varnish 5% SnCl₂ associated with 5.2% NaF and positive

Aim of the in situ-study was to evaluate fluoride retention in sound and demineralised enamel after application of a novel water-based fluoride (0.12% F) varnish Mirafluorid (Hager and Werken, Germany) compared to the resin-based varnish (2.26% F) Duraphat (Colgate, USA). Each five enamel specimens were prepared from 60 bovine incisors. In 150 of these specimens, incipient lesions were produced with acidic hydroxyethylcellulose (pH 4.8; 72 h), 150 specimens were not demineralised. The samples were equally (n=100) allotted to three groups (A: Mirafluord, B: Duraphat, and C: control). Each 80 sp

Different formulas of topical fluoride have been used to manage root carious lesions. This clinical trial aimed to investigate the efficacy of a dental varnish containing casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) and fluoride compared with fluoride alone in reversing/arresting root caries in xerostomic patients over 1 year. A total of 80 patients (age range 45-92 years) with primary root caries (n = 184 root carious lesions) and unstimulated salivary flow rate of <0.2 mL/min were randomly allocated to receive either dental varnish containing CPP-ACP and 5% fluoride (group 1:

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF), an effective topical fluoride agent for arresting caries, has a reputation for staining the teeth. Potassium iodide (KI) has been reported to minimize such staining, but doubts remain over its long-term efficacy and potential adverse influence on the effectiveness of SDF. This in vitro study used quantitative evaluation of color changes and the silver and fluoride release of treated tooth specimens to determine the effect of KI on the staining and caries-arresting properties of SDF. Twenty-one noncarious premolars were sectioned buccolingually to create 42 tooth

The histories of three controversies are described: fluoridation of water supplies and the risk of cancer; whether oral contraceptives cause breast cancer; and the role of self-examination in the prevention of cancer. For the future, some new controversies are already predictable. As well as the scientific debate around these topics, the roles of politics, the media, and pressure groups are discussed. The epidemiologist's responsibility to ensure that the correct interpretation of data is made clear to the public is considered.

Dermal exposure to hydrofluoric acid could potentially result in severe serum calcium and magnesium depletion induced by binding with fluoride anion. This report describes the case of a 48-year-old man who developed hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia accompanied by hypokalemia-an interesting finding-following a chemical injury with exposure to 70% hydrofluoric acid. Successful treatment included administration of calcium gluconate and magnesium both intravenously and topically.

Dental caries is a chronic condition that affects people of all ages and has a high prevalence in Indonesia. Applying silver diamine fluoride (SDF) as a topical fluoridation agent is one of the approaches to prevent bacterial interactions that lead to the development of carious lesions. This study aims to determine the efficacy of SDF as a caries preventive agent on permanent teeth. Article searches were conducted using the keywords "silver diamine fluoride" AND "permanent tooth OR permanent teeth" AND "caries OR dental caries" AND "remineralize" through digital databases including PubMed, Coc

The normal concentration of fluoride in saliva is about 1 mumol/L, which is somewhat less than that in plasma, and the salivary concentration is relatively independent of flow rate. Even this low concentration appears to be significant in terms of maintaining the integrity of tooth mineral. After fluoride consumption, the level in plasma peaks within less than an hour, and this produces a corresponding increase in salivary levels, which achieve baseline values usually within a few hours. At low concentrations (less than 4 mmol/L) in oral fluids, fluoride undergoes only slight reaction with too
