An international perspective on grief in neurosurgery: a survey study on how neurosurgeons deal with complications.

OBJECTIVE: Complications in neurosurgery are virtually inevitable due to the specialty's high-stakes nature. The emotional impact of these events on neurosurgeons is profound, yet little is known about how surgeons cope across different healthcare and cultural systems. Understanding these coping mechanisms is critical to support well-being and reduce burnout. Hence, the authors aimed to characterize the emotional and behavioral responses of neurosurgeons to complications and to examine differences in coping strategies between practitioners in Europe and the US. METHODS: The authors conducted

Psilocybin for Trauma-Related Disorders.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating, chronic disorder and efficacy rates of current PTSD treatments are underwhelming. There is a critical need for innovative approaches. We provide an overview of trauma and PTSD and cite literature providing converging evidence of the therapeutic potential of psilocybin for PTSD. No study to date has investigated psilocybin or psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) as treatments for PTSD. An open-label study in traumatized AIDS survivors found that PAP reduced PTSD symptoms, attachment anxiety, and demoralization. Several PAP trials show p

Forgivingness, anger, and hostility in aggressive driving.

This study was aimed at investigating the relationship between trait forgivingness, general anger, hostility, driving anger, and self-reported aggressive driving committed by the driver him/herself ("self" scale) and perceiving him/herself as an object of other drivers' aggressive acts ("other" scale). The Slovak version of questionnaires was administrated to a sample of 612 Slovak and Czech drivers. First, the factor structure of the Driver Anger Indicators Scale (DAIS) was investigated. Factor analyses of the self and other parts of the DAIS resulted in two factors, which were named as aggre

Experiential self-focus writing as a facilitator of processing an interpersonal hurt.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the effects of experiential self-focus writing on changes in psychological outcomes (i.e., unforgiveness and negative affect) after an interpersonal hurt and the buffering effects of experiential self-focus writing on the association between anger rumination and these psychological outcomes. DESIGN: A sample of 182 college students who had experienced interpersonal hurt were randomly assigned to either the experiential self-focus writing condition, in which participants wrote about their feelings and experiences related to the hurt, or to a control writing cond

Pain and multiple facets of anger and hostility in a sample seeking treatment for problematic anger.

A number of studies have reported associations between pain and anger in samples with chronic pain, but research has mostly overlooked associations between pain and anger in those with problematic anger. The present study explored associations between pain severity and a variety of anger and hostility constructs in a sample seeking anger treatment (n =131). Zero-order correlations and partial correlations were used to examine associations between pain, anger, and hostility, controlling for depressive symptoms. Hierarchical regression models examined potential interaction effects of gender on a

Culture and Comorbidity: Intimate Partner Violence as a Common Risk Factor for Maternal Mental Illness and Reproductive Health Problems among Former Child Soldiers in Nepal.

Our objective was to elucidate how culture influences internal (psychological), external (social), institutional (structural), and health care (medical) processes, which, taken together, create differential risk of comorbidity across contexts. To develop a conceptual model, we conducted qualitative research with 13 female child soldiers in Nepal. Participants gave open-ended responses to intimate partner violence (IPV) vignettes (marital rape, emotional abuse, violence during pregnancy). Twelve participants (92%) endorsed personal responses (remaining silent, enduring violence, forgiving the h

Leveraging opportunities for treatment/user simplicity (LOTUS): Navigating the current treatment landscape for achieving hepatitis C virus elimination among persons who inject drugs.

All-oral, direct-acting antivirals can cure hepatitis C virus (HCV) in almost all infected individuals; yet, many individuals with chronic HCV are not treated, and the incidence of acute HCV is increasing in some countries, including the United States. Strains on healthcare resources during the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted the progress toward the World Health Organization goal to eliminate HCV by 2030, especially among persons who inject drugs (PWID). Here, we present a holistic conceptual framework termed LOTUS (Leveraging Opportunities for Treatment/User Simplicity), designed to int

Localization of ictal Islamic rituals: Study of epilepsy center in Makkah.

BACKGROUND: Ictal semiology is important to aid the diagnosis of seizure type. Patients frequently require admission to an epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) to reach a correct diagnosis of epilepsy type. Some patients may exhibit unusual ictal phenomena that can lead to the diagnosis of psychogenic seizures. Unusual ictal phenomena include ictal kissing, praying, and drinking. Ictal religious speech and praying are other examples of unusual ictal phenomena. This study aims to assess the localization value of ictal Islamic rituals. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients admitted to the

Optimizing Antiretroviral Therapy with Bictegravir/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Alafenamide in virologically suppressed PLWH.

The pillar of treatment success, defined as viral suppression and immune restoration, should be integrated into a modern vision of therapeutic success with pharmacological attributes of ART, such as potency, forgiveness, and genetic barrier of single drugs and regimens, as well as their longterm tolerability and safety. Moreover, the longterm success of lifelong treatment cannot be separated from the opinions and preferences of PLWH. Regimen Optimization in the setting of HIV suppression may reduce pill burden, and/or dosing frequency, enhance tolerability and/or decrease toxicity, prevent or

Pillars of long-term antiretroviral therapy success.

BACKGROUND: Meeting the challenge of antiretroviral therapy (ART) whose efficacy can last a lifetime requires continuous updating of the virological, pharmacological, and quality of life outcomes to be pursued and a continuous review of literature data on the efficacy and tolerability of new drugs and therapeutic strategies. METHODS: With the aim of identifying open questions and answers about the current controversies in modern ART, we adapted the Design Thinking methodology to the needs of the design phase of a scientific article, involving a team of experts in HIV care. Determinants of Relapse and Opportunities for Growth: Perspectives on Substance Use among American Indian Community Members.

Resulting from generations of historical oppression and systemic racism, American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities experience serious health disparities associated with substance use disorders (SUDs). As part of a longstanding community-based participatory research intervention development project, our partnership of academic and community co-researchers conducted seven focus groups (N = 35) to understand community stakeholders' perspectives on substance use, relapse, and recovery on a rural AI reservation. Participants included cultural leaders (n = 10), SUD treatment providers (n

Parental reactions to parent- and sibling-directed aggression within a domestic violence context.

Parent- and sibling-directed aggression by minor children are two forms of family violence that often co-occur and have strong relations to prior exposure to domestic violence, yet are often overlooked in intervention efforts. In addition, current research does not examine these forms of family violence in tandem, and there is very limited research with samples exposed to domestic violence. To better understand how these forms of aggression operate within a domestic violence context, we interviewed 44 women residing in a domestic violence shelter with at least one child over 3.5 years of age w

Posttraumatic growth among women survivors of childhood sexual abuse: Its relation to cognitive strategies, posttraumatic symptoms, and resilience.

OBJECTIVE: Research suggests that, after a traumatic event, survivors can experience positive change (posttraumatic growth), but the relation of these changes to overall psychological adjustment (resilience) and psychological distress (posttraumatic symptoms; PTS), as well as the relation to possible contributors, is still unclear. The study examines posttraumatic growth (PTG) among women survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), looking at the relation of PTG to the women's cognitive strategies (past self-blame, self-forgiveness, perception of control and hope), resilience and PTS. METHODS:

Treatment of interdigital tinea pedis: once-daily therapy with sertaconazole nitrate.

The treatment of cutaneous fungal infections has been shown to be directly affected by the extent of patients' adherence to therapy regimens that are often cumbersome and last for several weeks. One useful alternative approach is once-daily dosing of topical antifungal agents rather than the traditional twice-daily regimen, an example of what has been called a "forgiving" regimen, designed to promote patient adherence. Sertaconazole, an imidazole antifungal agent, is known to be safe and effective when used twice daily in the treatment of tinea pedis. This report discusses a small (n=32) clini

The neural bases of empathy.

INTRODUCTION: Empathy is understood to refer to the capacity to vicariously experience the emotional states of others, and is considered to play a crucial role in many forms of adaptive social interaction. It has two components, one of which is cognitive and strongly related to the capacity to abstract the mental processes of other people, while the other is emotional and would be the reaction to the emotional state of another person. The development of neuroimaging techniques has made it possible to further our knowledge of the neuronal circuits involved in empathy by using a variety of strat

Fixation of metatarsal osteotomies in the treatment of hallux valgus.

Osteotomies as a treatment for hallux valgus require careful preoperative planning and meticulous attention to surgical technique. The procedure selected should be tailored to fit the deformity. For a patient with mild hallux valgus, the chevron osteotomy is the most intrinsically stable of the distal osteotomies and has the least potential for complications. Interest in the Ludloff osteotomy has had a resurgence because of its improved stability compared with more traditional osteotomies for correction of metatarsus primus varus. This osteotomy, however, is less forgiving and more dependent o

The Cerebellum's Role in Affective Disorders: The Onset of Its Social Dimension.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD) are the most frequent mental disorders whose indeterminate etiopathogenesis spurs to explore new aetiologic scenarios. In light of the neuropsychiatric symptoms characterizing Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome (CCAS), the objective of this narrative review is to analyze the involvement of the cerebellum (Cbm) in the onset of these conditions. It aims at detecting the repercussions of the Cbm activities on mood disorders based on its functional subdivision in vestibulocerebellum (vCbm), pontocerebellum (pCbm) and spinocerebellum (s

"We Try to Fix Things Quietly, and We Do Not Take Revenge": Christian Arab Teachers' Experiences Coping with Child Sexual Abuse Among Their Pupils in Israel.

Teachers are at the frontlines of the fight to identify and cope with child sexual abuse (CSA) among their pupils. Their methods of coping with CSA cases, both personally and professionally, are strongly influenced by their socio-cultural contexts and religious beliefs. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the experiences of Christian Arab teachers in Israel coping with the CSA of their pupils. Twelve Christian Arab elementary school teachers in Israel were recruited for the study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and a qualitative thematic analysis was employed based

Bioresorbable Coronary Scaffolds: Deployment Tips and Tricks and the Future of the Technology.

Bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS) were developed as an alternative to drug-eluting stents (DES) to facilitate vessel restoration and reduce the risk of future adverse events. However, recent meta-analyses and "real-world" registries have raised some concern about the safety of this novel technology, especially due to an increased risk of thrombosis within the first weeks of scaffold implantation. These devices appear to be less forgiving to poor implantation strategies when compared to contemporary DES. Moreover, problems with the first generation of these devices-bulky struts and high crossing pr
