Gingival metastasis of a bronchogenic adenocarcinoma: report of a case.

We report the case of a 64-year-old patient suffering from a multiple metastatic bronchial adenocarcinoma, referred to our department for a gingival tumefaction. The diagnostic assumptions considered were those of a pyogenic granuloma, of a primary gingival carcinoma, or of a metastasis of the bronchial tumor. An excisional biopsy was carried out and the histopathologic examination confirmed the latter diagnosis. No complementary care was performed because of the multiple localizations and unfavorable prognosis. If metastases of pulmonary cancers represent the majority of gingival metastases,

Gingival neurofibroma in a neurofibromatosis type 1 patient.

Neurofibroma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumour. It is one of the most frequent tumours of neural origin and its presence is one of the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF-I). Neurofibromatosis type 1 is an autosomal dominantly inherited disease due to an alteration in the long arm of chromosome 17. About 50% of NF-I patients have no family history of the disease. NF-I patients have skin lesions (cafe au lait spots and neurofibromas) as well as bone malformations and central nervous system tumours. Diagnosis is based on a series of clinical criteria. Gin

Metastasis to maxillary gingiva from carcinoma of breast. A case report.

A rare case of metastatic infiltrating duct carcinoma involving gingiva in relation to maxillary left canine-premolar of a 40 year old female is presented. The unilateral gingival enlargement in canine-premolar region was quite unusual. Pertinent history and histological examination revealed that the tumor was a metastatic carcinoma, the primary lesion of which was in the breast. The differential diagnosis of gingival enlargements is discussed in this paper. The resemblance of this mass to an inflammatory hyperplastic condition reflects the need for a detailed case history and examination.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy with high serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein. Ultrastructural study and immunological evidence of glial fibrillary protein and alpha-fetoprotein.

We report an infant melanotic neuroectodermal tumor in the anterior part of the upper gingiva, which was associated with high urinary excretion of vanilmandelic acid. Serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein were abnormally high (200 ng/ml). They returned to normal after removal of the tumor (10 ng/ml). The tumor was characterized histologically and ultrastructurally by the presence of melanocytic and astrocytic cells containing glial fibrillary protein. Intracellular alpha-fetoprotein was demonstrated by the immunoperoxidase method (PAP) in scattered foci of interstitial cells.

Plasmablastic lymphoma presenting as a brachial artery aneurysm associated with haemodialysis arteriovenous access ligation in a renal transplant patient.

INTRODUCTION: Plasmablastic lymphoma is a rare and aggressive neoplasm, generally associated with immunodeficiencies and related to latent Epstein-Barr virus infection. This case is the first reported case of plasmablastic lymphoma relapse in aneurysmatic brachial artery wall. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the case of male patient who underwent cadaveric donor kidney transplant when he was 61 years old and radio-cephalic distal arteriovenous fistula ligation 8 months later. After 8 years, he developed gingival plasmablastic lymphoma treated with cyclophosphamide, hydroxydaunorubicin, oncovin

Gingivobuccal Cancers: Demographics and Geographic Variations.

Gingivobuccal cancer (GBC), a squamous cell carcinoma of the inner cheek and gum, accounted for more than 389,485 new lip and oral cavity cancer cases worldwide in 2022. Its incidence varies geographically, mainly due to endemic habits like smokeless tobacco and betel nut use. GBC is highly prevalent in South Asia compared to the West. In India, more than 30% of adults consume tobacco. Most cases in South Asia are diagnosed late, with 50% to 70% presenting in advanced stages. Males are predominantly affected, with a ratio up to 4:1, linked to higher tobacco, betel quid, and alcohol use.

[A newborn with a tumour on the tongue and alveolar ridge].

In a newborn boy, a tumour was seen on the tongue and mandibula. A diagnosis of congenital epulis was made. This usually pedunculated tumour is present at birth and located on the maxillary or mandibular alveolar ridge (more commonly on the maxilla), but rarely on the tongue. It varies greatly in size from just a few millimetres in diameter to several centimetres. Treatment is only necessary when feeding problems occur.

[Gingival metastasis in breast phyllodes tumor].

BACKGROUND: The metastasis of oral cavity is rare. We report a gingival metastasis in the course of low grade phyllode sarcoma of the breast which is usually little metastatic. CASE-REPORT: A 44 year old woman was operated two years ago for a phyllod sarcoma of the breast histologically confirmed. She presented for a mandibular exophytic tumour associated with haemorrhagic, necrotic, ulcerated and bulking gingivitis surrounding at the level of the maxillary and mandibular gingiva. The examination revealed multiple nodular lesions of the trunk and the scalp. The histological examination confir

Hepatocellular carcinomas diagnosed following metastasis to the oral cavity. Report of 2 cases.

Oral metastases from hepatocellular carcinomas are rare. Case 1 was a 66-year-old male without previous history of liver disease who presented with metastasis to the gingival jaw mucosae on the lingual side. Case 2 was a 71-year-old male, with a previous history of diabetes, hepatitis, and cirrhosis who presented with metastasis to the right palatine tonsil. Oral metastases were the first manifestation of the hepatocellular carcinoma in both cases. A review of the literature disclosed 20 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma metastasizing to the oral cavity, 7 affecting the gingival mucosae and no

Surgical Principles and Approaches to Gingivobuccal Cancers.

Surgical management of gingivobuccal cancers presents unique challenges due to complex anatomy and aggressive tumor behavior. This subset of oral cavity cancer frequently demonstrates extension into critical structures, submucosal spread, and bony invasion. This article reviews the general principles as well as surgical approaches associated with these cancers. En bloc resection remains the foundation of primary management, with individualized approaches based on tumor location, stage, and depth of invasion. Achieving negative surgical margins is critical for local control, with emerging evide

Nuances of Perioperative Therapy in Gingivobuccal Cancers.

Gingivobuccal complex cancers represent the most common oral cavity malignancy in the Indian subcontinent, constituting up to 40% of oral cancers in Southeast Asia. Despite surgery being the primary treatment modality, locoregional recurrence remains a significant challenge in locally advanced disease. Adjuvant radiotherapy improves locoregional control in patients with adverse pathologic features. Implementation of evidence-based dose constraints, comprehensive dental prophylaxis, and early supportive care measures are critical for minimizing treatment-related morbidity while maintaining onco

Pediatric localized reactive gingival lesions: a retrospective study from Israel.

PURPOSE: Chronic irritation of the gingiva causes localized reactive hyperplastic lesions (LRHLs), which are classified into: peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF); peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG); pyogenic granuloma (PG); and focal fibrous hyperplasia (FFH). The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of localized reactive hyperplastic lesions in Israeli children and adolescents. METHODS: All consecutive archival LRHL biopsies of the gingiva between 1989 and 2008 were included. Lesions were analyzed according to location and patients' age and gender. Our findings were compar

Ghrelin and oral diseases.

Eating food is one of the most complicated behaviours in mammals, especially humans. The primary function of ghrelin is regulation of the appetite level and its stimulation. It is also responsible for the body's energy balance and glucose homeostasis. Ghrelin has been shown to affect many brain structures, which confirms the presence of ghrelin receptors in the brain. Studies are also conducted to assess the possible role of ghrelin in anxiety states and in memory disorders and motor dysfunctions. Ghrelin has been found in saliva and salivary glands, teeth and gums, and in the taste buds of th

Gingival Mucoperiosteal Fibroma-Clinical, Imaging, and Histological Review of a Novel Oral Fibroma in 27 Dogs.

This case series describes the clinical, imaging, and histological features of 27 lesions diagnosed as a benign fibrous mass not previously described in veterinary literature. The authors propose the name gingival mucoperiosteal fibroma (GMPF) to describe these fibrous lesions found in dogs. Histologically, GMPF is characterized by a lack of odontogenic tissue and various degrees of ossification. GMPFs affect adult dogs with an average age of 95 months (range 24-156 months) and appear as expansile growths with superficial appearance matching the surrounding gingiva. The mandibular incisive reg

A puzzling pregnancy epulis with aggressive bone loss mimicking malignant neoplasm: A case report.

Epulis is a benign tumor, rarely involves aggressive alveolar bone resorption. This study reported a rare case of rapid growth of pregnancy epulis with extensive alveolar bone destruction and the management of this case. A 24-year old pregnant woman at 35 weeks and 1 day of gestation presented a large asymptomatic nodular mass with severe teeth loosening at the anterior mandibular region for 4 weeks. Radiographic examination showed extensive alveolar bone resorption around the affected teeth to the apical area. After delivery, the patient received an extended resection under general anesthesia

Tension Pneumothorax After Percutaneous Tracheostomy.

A 76-year-old woman with right mandibular gingival cancer was scheduled for surgery. A percutaneous tracheostomy kit was used for tracheostomy under intravenous sedation. After puncturing the cricothyroid membrane, a dilator was inserted along a guidewire. Bucking was observed at the time of insertion of the dilator, despite intratracheal lidocaine spray applied before insertion. After that, the tracheostomy tube was inserted, but no capnographic waveforms appeared when the tube was connected to the anesthesia circuit. Direct macroscopic observation revealed a perforation extending from the po
