Context: During thoroughbred races, jockeys are placed in potentially injurious situations, often with inadequate safety equipment. Jockeys frequently sustain head injuries; therefore, it is important that they wear appropriately certified helmets. Objective: The goals of this study are (1) to perform impact attenuation testing according to ASTM F1163-15 on a sample of equestrian helmets commonly used by jockeys in the United States and (2) to quantify headform acceleration and residual crush after repeat impacts at the same location. Participants and Design: Seven helmet models underwent impa

Cycling is a leading cause of mild traumatic brain injury in the US. While bicycle helmets help protect cyclists who crash, limited biomechanical data exist differentiating helmet protective capabilities. This paper describes the development of a bicycle helmet evaluation scheme based in real-world cyclist accidents and brain injury mechanisms. Thirty helmet models were subjected to oblique impacts at six helmet locations and two impact velocities. The summation of tests for the analysis of risk (STAR) equation, which condenses helmet performance from a range of tests into a single value, was

This study assessed to what extent an enforcement campaign influenced seat-belt and helmet wearing on a Pakistani highway. The study setting was the Karachi-Hala highway where a traffic enforcement campaign was conducted from Dec 2009 to Feb 2010. Seat-belt and helmet wearing were observed in Nov 2009 and Apr 2010 at Karachi toll plaza. Differences in wearing rates as a function of occupants' age, sex, and vehicle type were compared between the two periods. On average, 9 119 (Standard deviation=1 896) traffic citations were issued per month from Aug 2009 to Feb 2010; 4.2% of which were for not

Liquid-conditioned garments (LCG's) may be useful in alleviating heat stress on aircrew members. This study evaluated the effects of a liquid-cooled vest and/or cap on subjects exposed to a thermal environment which simulated the stress of low-level flight in hot weather. The chamber was set at dry bulb temperature 35 degrees C, wet bulb temperature 26 degrees C, and black globe temperature 43 degrees C. Subjects were eight men, aged 23-45 yr. Each subject was studied in four 100-min exposures: uncooled control (XX); head cooling only (HX); torso cooling only (XT); and combined head and torso

Equestrian sports are associated with high rates of major injury compared to collision and powered two-wheel sports. Advancements in rider and horse safety equipment and the implementation of comprehensive emergency action planning standards may help mitigate injuries, particularly in regard to the Olympic disciplines of dressage, show jumping, and three-day eventing covered in this review. Personal safety equipment to consider includes helmets, safety and air vests, and horse tack including safety stirrups, acoustic dampeners, and breakaway reins. Equestrian event medical coverage requires em

BACKGROUND: Sterile surgical helmet systems are frequently utilized in total knee arthroplasty procedures to protect the surgeon while maintaining a comfortable working environment. However, common helmet systems pressurize the space between the surgical gown and the surgeon's skin. In gowns with a back seam, this may allow contaminated skin particles to escape into the surgical field. By measuring bacterial colony-forming units (CFUs), this study sought to determine if occlusion of the open back seam reduced the risk of potential contamination.
METHODS: First, qualitative analysis depicting

This paper presents three adult cases referred to a Scottish Dental Hospital and Research School for management of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs), associated with either electric bike (e-bike) or electric scooter (e-scooter) use. E-bikes and e-scooters are widely available for purchase within the UK. This article discusses the factors relevant to e-bikes and scooters which may affect resulting injuries. These include the mechanism of trauma, alcohol intake and helmet-use. Patients sustaining such injuries are likely to present to the dental team in primary care in the first instance, often w

PURPOSE: This study evaluated head impact response between different helmet impact test systems by comparing the performance of ten polo helmets.
METHODS: Helmets were evaluated using three test systems: a twin-wire guided drop tower, an oblique drop tower, and an impact pendulum. Impact tests were conducted at matched locations (front boss, side, rear boss) and speeds (3.46, 5.46 m/s). We employed a linear mixed model with helmet model as a random effect and calculated the least square mean differences between systems for peak linear acceleration (PLA), peak rotational acceleration (PRA), pe

The purpose of the study was to describe helmet fitting characteristics and influence of prior helmet fitting, issuance and initial season in a sample of youth football athletes. Helmet fit was assessed for 69 athletes aged 8-14 years using a standardized, 9-point inspection. Associated variables for improper fit consisted of previous fitting of helmet for the season, helmet issuance [team/school issued or purchased individually] and year of helmet initial season within 3 years of current season. A series of chi-square tests for association were conducted between the overall helmet fit and the

PURPOSE: The current equestrian helmet standards set minimal requirements for passing helmets, highlighting the need for a rating system that differentiates helmets based on their impact performance. This study's objectives were to compare equestrian helmet impact response kinematics between linear-driven and oblique impact conditions and then to evaluate the effect of incorporating oblique drop tests into a previously established equestrian helmet rating system, Equestrian STAR.
METHODS: Oblique drop tests were conducted with 45 equestrian helmet models at two impact locations, front boss an

Concussions, a prevalent public health concern in the United States, often result from mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), notably in sports such as American football. There is limited exploration of smart-textile-based sensors for measuring the head impacts associated with concussions in sports and recreational activities. In this paper, we describe the development and construction of a smart textile impact sensor (STIS) and validate STIS functionality under high magnitude impacts. This STIS can be inserted into helmet cushioning to determine head impact force. The designed 2 × 2 STIS matri

This study aimed to investigate the association between drunk riding, unhelmeted riding, unlicensed riding, and running-off-road (ROR) crashes. Multiple logistic regression was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) by using the National Taiwan Traffic Crash Dataset for 2011-2016. The results revealed that unhelmeted riding was associated with 138% (AOR = 2.38; CI (confidence interval) = 2.34-2.42) and 47% (AOR = 1.47; CI = 1.45-1.49) higher risks of drunk riding and unlicensed riding, respectively. The risk of unhelmeted riding increased with blood alcohol concentrations (BACs), and

PROBLEM: E-scooters are a new form of mobility used more frequently in urban environments worldwide. As there is evidence of an increased risk of head injuries, helmets are recommended and (less frequently) legislated. Denmark has enacted mandatory e-scooter helmet use legislation from January 1, 2022. So far, it is unclear how this newly implemented law influenced helmet use of e-scooter riders in Denmark immediately after its implementation.
METHOD: In this observational study, we register and compare e-scooter helmet use before the mandatory helmet use legislation (December 2021) and after

Headguard use is appropriate during some combat sports activities where the risks of injury to the face and ears are elevated. Headguards are highly effective in reducing the incidence of facial lacerations in studies of amateur boxers and are just as effective in other striking sports. They should be used in scenarios - especially sparring prior to competitions - where avoidance of laceration and subsequent exposure to potential blood-borne pathogens is important. Headguards are appropriate where avoidance of auricular injury is deemed important; limited data show a marked reduction in incide
