Pancreatic cancer is a highly malignant gastrointestinal tumor, frequently accompanied by severe cancer-related pain that significantly diminishes patients' quality of life. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), a non-invasive therapeutic modality, alleviates cancer pain through multiple mechanisms, including the induction of coagulative necrosis through rapid temperature elevation in targeted tissues, disruption of nerve fibers within the tumor microenvironment, and modulation of inflammatory factor release. In combination therapy, HIFU can be integrated with radiotherapy, chemotherapy an

The efficacy and safety of focused ultrasound (FUS) treatments can be significantly enhanced with microbubbles, but the common ultrasound contrast agents suffer from limited stability, short circulation times, and risks associated with inertial cavitation and jetting. Here, we demonstrate that rigid hollow microparticles enable controlled, targeted thermal treatments of deep tissues via FUS. These acoustically responsive agents exhibit properties comparable to microbubbles yet possess superior mechanical stability, prolonged circulation, and enhanced responsiveness. Characterized by a negative

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid nodules are common and sometimes associated with cosmetic issues. Surgical treatment has several disadvantages, including visible scarring. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a recent noninvasive treatment for thyroid nodules. The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of HIFU for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library for studies evaluating the outcomes of HIFU for patients with benign thyroid nodules. We conducted a meta-analysis by using a random effects model and evaluated the volu

Objective.High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can induce thermal and mechanical mechanisms in a well-defined focal volume of tissues. Histotripsy is a form of mechanical HIFU that can initiate and interact with bubble(s) to cause shock scattering and perhaps atomization within the bubble(s) to fractionate most soft tissues. Ultrasonic atomization, or the ejection of fine droplets from an acoustically-excited liquid exposed to air, has been shown to erode planar soft tissue surfaces, which has led to theories that atomization is a mechanism in histotripsy. However, healthy tendons show res

PURPOSE: Tissue-mimicking phantoms (TMPs) are synthetic materials designed to replicate properties of biological tissues. There is a need to quantify temperature changes following ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging-guided high intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU). This work describes development, characterization and evaluation of tissue-mimicking thermochromic phantom (TMTCP) for direct visualization and quantification of HIFU heating. The objectives were to (1) develop an MR-imageable, HIFU-compatible TMTCP that reports absolute temperatures, (2) characterize TMTCP physical propertie

Focused ultrasound (FUS) produces a region of high intensity at the focal zone of the beam but with minimal effects at adjacent areas, allowing the sonication of deep targets throughout the body. Despite early obstacles to transmitting ultrasound energy through the skull, recent advances in ultrasound technology, software, and real-time monitoring have resulted in a renewed interest in the clinical applications of transcranial FUS. Following extensive pre-clinical studies, ultrasound-induced thermal ablation has been approved by several countries for the treatment of essential tremor, Parkinso

The benefits of hyperthermia are well known as both a primary treatment modality and adjuvant therapy for treating cancer. Among the different techniques available, high-intensity focused ultrasound is the only noninvasive modality that can provide local hyperthermia precisely at a targeted location at any depth inside the body using image guidance. Traditionally, focused ultrasound exposures have been provided at high rates of energy deposition for thermal ablation of benign and malignant tumors. At present, exposures are being evaluated in pulsed mode, which lower the rates of energy deposit

Thyroid nodules are very frequent in the iodine deficiency regions of central Europe and some of the affected patients are referred for definitive treatment, such as surgery and radioiodine treatment. In recent years nonsurgical and non-radioiodine techniques have been introduced to treat thyroid gland pathologies. These techniques include the probe-based techniques of radiofrequency, microwave and laser application. The only noninvasive technique is high-intensity focused ultrasound. All mentioned techniques have the goal to reduce the volume of the thyroid nodule by application of energy/hea

BACKGROUND: Whether cryoablation and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) provide distinct advantages in hemigland ablation for localized prostate cancer (PCa) is unresolved. METHODS: A prospective FT-PCa registry (2021–2025) was analysed, identifying 258 men treated with hemigland ablation (cryoablation n = 179; HIFU n = 79). Baseline differences were addressed through inverse-probability-of-treatment weighting based on age, PSA, PSA density, ISUP, PI-RADS, lesion size, % of positive cores and prostate volume. Weighted Kaplan–Meier estimators, log-rank tests and Cox models were used for t

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a leading cause of cancer mortality, with limited curative options. Histotripsy is a noninvasive focused ultrasound ablation technique that destroys tumors through acoustic cavitation rather than heat-based methods, offering an alternative to radiofrequency and microwave ablation. This review traces histotripsy from preclinical development to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for liver tumors. Unlike thermal methods, histotripsy creates precise mechanical tissue fractionation while preserving critical structures, including blood vessels and

Pressure-modulated shockwave histotripsy (PSH) is a new type of histotripsy that has recently been proposed for precise mechanical tissue fractionation without inducing the shock scattering effect. Though a previous initial proof-of-concept study clearly demonstrated the feasibility of PSH through introducing the pressure modulation time point (tm) to minimise the shock scattering effect, this study was limited to the examination of the effect of a single PSH pulse at a constant tm on bubble dynamics. Here, we investigated the effects of varying PSH exposure conditions, particularly changes of

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a contemporary non-invasive ablative procedure that utilizes high- or low-intensity ultrasound, guided and monitored by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While MRgFUS has been established as an effective treatment for conditions like essential tremor and tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease, it has recently emerged as a safe and promising ablative minimally invasive procedure for the management of treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders. Indeed, despite the availability of various pharmacological and behavioral therapies,

PURPOSE: Image-guided thermal ablation are established treatment options for non-surgical patients with primary and metastatic liver cancers. However, there are limitations with nonuniformity of cancer tissue destruction, heat sink effect and the risk of thermal ablative injury. The current non-thermal ablative techniques have high risk of local recurrence and are not widely adopted. Histotripsy is a treatment technology that destroys targeted tissue under ultrasound visualization via mechanical destruction through the precise application of acoustic cavitation and can offer the potential of n

INTRODUCTION: To date, there have only been 2 systematic reviews, and 1 systematic review and meta-analysis on high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for benign thyroid nodules. The present systematic review and meta-analysis seeks to evaluate the efficacy and safety of HIFU in the treatment of benign thyroid nodules.
METHODS: Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane databases were searched for relevant studies from 1990 to 2021. Nine studies were included in the systematic review and 6 in the meta-analysis. Pooled volume reduction rates (VRRs) at 3, 6 and 24 months after HIFU were assessed.

Introduction: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders and is often difficult to control with medication. Intractable epilepsy often results in compromised quality of life (QOL), neurologic morbidity and even mortality. In carefully selected cases, resective surgery offers the best potential for cure or seizure control. However, a large proportion of patients are not suitable for resective epilepsy surgery. Neuromodulation techniques are increasingly being used to treat such refractory cases. Recently, the FDA approved Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) for

This study presented the design, and preliminary validation of a dual-mode focused ultrasound system for thermal ablation and histotripsy based on a single transducer. The acoustic characteristic measurements indicated that the maximum acoustic power was approximately 185 W in thermal ablation mode and exceeded 6 000 W in histotripsy mode. Under different treatment parameters, the ex vitro experimental results demonstrated that the system could achieve coagulative necrosis through thermal ablation and liquefaction through histotripsy, which disintegrates tissue into homogenate, respectively. The advent of telesurgery has opened a new frontier within minimally invasive surgery, allowing surgeons to complete procedures from a remote location and providing new opportunities for the delivery of care. Herein, we present the first clinical experience of telesurgery using high intensity-focused ultrasound (HIFU) for focal treatment of prostate cancer. The procedure was performed using the Focal One® device (Focal One, Austin, TX, USA) on a 72-year-old with an ISUP Grade Group 2 prostate cancer from a single biopsy core that corresponds to a PIRADS 4 lesion in the left mid-apical region.
