Perinatal depression, and the perspective of individuals with legal backgrounds in India: Exploring policy gaps and human rights implications.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal Depression (PND) remains an underrecognized public health concern in India, despite its myriad consequences for women, children and families. Unmet perinatal mental health (PMH) needs may have a multifaceted adverse impact on human rights advancements. However, in India, awareness about PND and PMH amongst healthcare providers and law enforcement agencies remains limited, which is critical for law and policy reforms. OBJECTIVES: This study assesses awareness and perceptions of PND and PMH among individuals holding Indian law degrees (IHLD), with a focus on the currently

Torture as a tool of domination: The logic behind the use of torture against Palestinians. A human rights approach.

This article explores the psychopolitical logic of torture within the Palestinian context, focusing on its role as a tool of domination and resistance. Torture in Palestine is not merely an instrument for inflicting individual suffering but is a strategic mechanism employed by the Israeli state to dismantle collective identity, suppress resistance, and erode the dignity of the Palestinian people. Since the onset of the Gaza war on October 7, 2023, the scale and brutality of torture tactics, including physical abuse, psychological manipulation, and sexual violence, have intensified, highlightin

HIV, Hepatitis C, TB, Harm Reduction, and Persons Deprived of Liberty: What Standards Does International Human Rights Law Establish?

HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and TB in prisons and other places of detention are serious public health concerns, with prevalence and incidence considerably higher than in the general community because of the overrepresentation of risky behavior, substandard conditions, overcrowding, people who inject drugs, and the wholly inadequate prevention, care, and treatment of these conditions, including the denial of harm reduction services. This is not only a severe public health crisis but also a serious human rights concern. This article works to clarify the standards established by human rights la

Interventions to change the policing of drug consumption and sex work in ways that facilitate public health programming and respect for human rights have included policy reforms, education, and litigation. In 2009, the Kyrgyz government promulgated "Instruction 417," prohibiting police interference with "harm reduction" programs, re-enforcing citizen rights, addressing police occupational safety concerns, and institutionalizing police-public health collaboration. Restricted patients and detention in the community: The human rights implications of supervised discharge under the Mental Health Bill 2025.

This article critically analyses provisions in the Mental Health Bill 2025 that, if passed, will amend the Mental Health Act (MHA) 1983 to create a power for tribunals and the Justice Secretary to discharge restricted patients from hospital subject to conditions that deprive them of their liberty in the community. These provisions pose a threat to the human rights of patients who straddle the divide between the mental health and criminal justice systems. Furthermore, the provisions and the cases that preceded them expose the limits of policies of de-institutionalisation and official ambitions

Health status of women affected by homelessness: A cluster of in concreto human rights violations and a time for action.

Health problems of women experiencing homelessness are driven either from the usual background characteristics of this population, or from the homeless lifestyle. Apart from poverty and unemployment, transition to homelessness is often associated with substance abuse, history of victimization, stress, poor mental health and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Water insecurity can undermine bodily hygiene and dental health, posing a greater risk of dehydration and opportunistic infections. Exposure to extreme environmental conditions like heat waves and natural disasters increases morbidity, ac

Human rights violations and smoking status among South African adults enrolled in the South Africa Stress and Health (SASH) study.

Despite South Africa's history of violent political conflict, and the link between stressful experiences and smoking in the literature, no public health study has examined South Africans' experiences of human rights violations and smoking. Using data from participants in the nationally representative cross-sectional South Africa Stress and Health study (SASH), this analysis examined the association between respondent smoking status and both human rights violations experienced by the respondent and violations experienced by the respondents' close friends and family members. Recommendation by a law body to ban infant male circumcision has serious worldwide implications for pediatric practice and human rights.

BACKGROUND: Recent attempts in the USA and Europe to ban the circumcision of male children have been unsuccessful. Of current concern is a report by the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute (TLRI) recommending that non-therapeutic circumcision be prohibited, with parents and doctors risking criminal sanctions except where the parents have strong religious and ethnic ties to circumcision. The acceptance of this recommendation would create a precedent for legislation elsewhere in the world, thereby posing a threat to pediatric practice, parental responsibilities and freedoms, and public health. The tragedy of Tauccamarca: a human rights perspective on the pesticide poisoning deaths of 4 children in the Peruvian Andes.

The pesticide poisoning deaths of 24 children in an isolated Peruvian village make a compelling case that corporate accountability for pesticide poisonings in the developing south should be examined from a human rights perspective. Highly toxic pesticides cannot be used safely under prevailing socioeconomic conditions. The industry asserts that the deaths of these children were accidental, blaming misuse. Tragedies such as these poisonings are not accidents, but foreseeable, and therefore preventable. Sales of highly toxic pesticides that cause repeated and predictable poisonings violate the f

Disclosure of HIV status and human rights: the duties and responsibilities of couples, medical professionals, family members and the state.

This case history is about a young husband in India who became HIV positive and did not inform his wife. This man was working for a company in the city of Mumbai when he became ill with tuberculosis and was diagnosed with AIDS. This information was not disclosed to his 21-year-old wife, who was living with her parents-in-law in a rural area of South Kerala. He came home to recover and, supported by his parents' wishes, wanted his wife to become pregnant, even though she had asked that they wait until he had recovered. She came to know that her husband had AIDS and the dangers it posed only whe

Addressing the Global Mental Health Crisis: How a Human Rights Approach Can Help End the Search for Pharmaceutical Magic Bullets.

Although there is a seductive neutrality to calls to end the "mental health crisis" and develop more effective psychotropics, these calls are grounded in a neoliberal sensibility. Such rhetoric deflects attention away from the lived realities of people's lives and from the human rights violations that are often the cause of mental ill-health. Moreover, the undue influence of both industry and organized psychiatry in the mental health field create a perfect storm in which mental health research, policy, and clinical practice are driven by the search for pharmaceutical magic bullets. This search

Dignity, Social Reintegration of Prisoners, and the New Penal Power: European Human Rights, Experiences of Belgian Prisoners, and Professional Practices.

Over the last 30 years, prisoners' dignity and fundamental rights have increasingly been protected by European human rights bodies such as the European Court of Human Rights and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. This protection is aimed particularly at the traditional power relations between prisoners and uniformed staff. More recently, social reintegration of prisoners has also been recognized by these European human rights standards as a fundamental element of human dignity and an equally important aim of imprisonment as re
