Eighteen-month follow-up of infants fed evaporated milk formula.

In parts of Canada including Newfoundland and Labrador and among Aboriginal peoples, infants still consume evaporated milk (EM) formulas for cultural and economic reasons. At 3 and 6 months, full-term infants fed EM (n = 30) received low intakes of iron, thiamine, selenium and had higher weight velocity than breastfed (BF, n = 29) infants. EM infants had greater anemia, lowered transketolase activity (thiamine) and lowered glutathione peroxidase (selenium) activity (p < 0.05). To determine the later effect of early feeding deficit on nutritional status, we examined these same infants at 18 mon

Calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium: how much is too much for infant formulas?

Despite the use of metabolic balance studies and measurements of bone mineral content, it is difficult to assess the requirements of Ca and P in growing infants. From observations made forty years ago with cow's milk formulas it is obvious what is too much calcium and phosphorus in infant formulas. These observations were utilized in the development of "humanized cow's milk formulas" in the 1950s. Though the total concentrations of Ca and P have been greatly reduced in these formulas, the Ca/P ratio imbalance, compared to human milk, persists. Infants fed these formulas still receive a relativ

[Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia of inadequately breast-fed infants and the effect of formula supplementation].

One hundred and fifty full-term breast-fed infants were analysed for their oral intake in the first 6 days. Fifty infants with less than 330 ml/kg/6 days breast feeding were defined as inadequately breast-fed infants. Twenty inadequately breast-fed infants without formula supplementation had significantly lower total fluid intake, lower total calorie intake, more body weight loss and significantly higher rates of hyperbilirubinemia and requirement of phototherapy when compared with the control group of 100 infants with more than 330 ml/kg/6 days breast feeding. On the other hand, 30 inadequate

Controlled trial of new formulae for feeding low birth weight infants.

Over a 13-month period 85 babies were randomly allocated to one of three groups at birth. Babies in Group A were fed SMA Low Birth Weight, Group B Prematalac and Group C Preaptamil. A fourth group, the control group was fed expressed breast milk (EBM). The babies were studied when they were on full enteral feeds until weight was greater than 2.0 kg. Weight gain was greatest in Group B compared to the other three groups but there was no significant difference in gain of length or occipito-frontal circumference. The babies in Group B had a lower volume of feeds and lower energy intake than the o

Results of feeding a special formula to very low birth weight infants.

Fifty-eight premature infants weighing less than 1,600 g at birth were fed a special formula. The formula contained nutrients in amounts recommended by the Committee ono Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics for very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. The feeding studies were carried out at newborn nurseries in Tampa, Florida (study A, n = 25), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (study B, n = 20), and Oaklawn, Illinois (study C, n = 13). Study subjects were comparable in birth weight, gestational age, and in the duration of follow-up in the nurseries. All study subjects grew at rates of weight a

Modular Formula: an approach to management of infants with specific or complex food intolerances.

Modular Formula is a dietary preparation for use in treating infants with complex malabsorptive disorders and for weaning infants from total parenteral nutrition. With this formula the physician can alter the quality of the various nutrients normally fed to infants as well as concentrations of those nutrients. Infants who cannot tolerate existing proprietary formulas will often thrive with the judicious use of this flexible formula. Modular Formula provides the clinician with a useful aid in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic diarrhea of infancy.

Supplemental Donor Milk vs Infant Formula in Moderate to Late Preterm Infants: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: High-quality evidence supports the use of pasteurized donor human milk (donor milk) in very preterm infants with insufficient maternal milk available. However, evidence to guide the use of donor milk in more mature preterm infants is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of donor milk vs term infant formula, used to supplement insufficient maternal milk, on the time to establish full enteral feeds in moderate to late preterm infants. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multisite, blinded randomized clinical trial was conducted from July 6, 2021, to April 5, 2023, at 2 Aus

Cyclic Formula Feeding Among Infants Participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.

BACKGROUND: Low-income households often experience a cyclic pattern in food availability, with acute food shortages at month end. Variations in the monthly feeding of infant formula are understudied. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the amount and frequency of formula consumed at the beginning and end of the monthly Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) assistance cycle and test associations with total energy intake and other feeding practices among infants aged 7-11 mo. METHODS: This study was conducted between May 2020 and April 2021 in the so

Rheological Behaviors of Thickened Infant Formula Prepared with Xanthan Gum-Based Food Thickeners for Dysphagic Infants.

Thickened infant formula (TIF) prepared with commercial xanthan gum (XG)-based food thickeners are commonly used to care for infants with swallowing difficulties or regurgitation. In this study, the rheological properties of TIF prepared with four commercial food thickeners (coded A-D) were determined as a function of thickener concentration, thickener type, and setting time because the selection of an appropriate food thickener for TIF preparation is necessary for managing dysphagia in infants. The flow and dynamic rheological properties of TIF were investigated at three different concentrati

Nutritional adequacy of goat milk infant formulas for term infants: a double-blind randomised controlled trial.

The safety and nutritional adequacy of goat milk infant formulas have been questioned. The primary aim of the present study was to compare the growth and nutritional status of infants fed a goat milk infant formula with those of infants fed a typical whey-based cow milk infant formula. The secondary aim was to examine a range of health- and allergy-related outcomes. A double-blind, randomised controlled trial with 200 formula-fed term infants randomly assigned to receive either goat or cow milk formula from 2 weeks to at least 4 months of age was conducted. A cohort of 101 breast-fed infants w

Clinical Response to Two Formulas in Infants with Parent-Reported Signs of Formula Intolerance: A Multi-Country, Double-Blind, Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Signs of feeding intolerance are common in formula-fed infants. We evaluated the clinical response to a partially hydrolyzed 100% whey protein formula with high sn-2 palmitate and reduced lactose (FA) and to an alpha-lactalbumin-enriched whey-predominant intact protein formula with full lactose (FB) in healthy full-term infants with parent-reported signs of feeding intolerance. METHODS: In a double-blind, parallel-group trial in 6 Asian study centers, exclusively formula-fed infants aged 30 to 90 days, whose parents reported fussiness-crying for ≥2 hours/day plus gassiness and/or

Gendered heuristics and social pressure in infant feeding: a qualitative study of formula choice and legitimation.

This study examined how expectant mothers, mothers, and fathers in Southeastern Brazil interpret and justify infant formula use. Four focus groups (n = 28) underwent a hybrid inductive-deductive thematic analysis. Four domains emerged: social pressure; technology and risk control; safety in preparation procedures; and legitimation of parental choices. Expectant mothers framed formula as a justifiable last resort; mothers invoked necessity to reconcile formula use with maternal expectations; fathers more often weighed pragmatic needs, professional recommendations, and observed infant outcomes.

Effects of Soy-Based Infant Formula on Weight Gain and Neurodevelopment in an Autism Mouse Model.

Mice fed soy-based diets exhibit increased weight gain compared to mice fed casein-based diets, and the effects are more pronounced in a model of fragile X syndrome (FXS; Fmr1KO). FXS is a neurodevelopmental disability characterized by intellectual impairment, seizures, autistic behavior, anxiety, and obesity. Here, we analyzed body weight as a function of mouse age, diet, and genotype to determine the effect of diet (soy, casein, and grain-based) on weight gain. We also assessed plasma protein biomarker expression and behavior in response to diet. Juvenile Fmr1KO mice fed a soy protein-based

Determination of Aflatoxin M1 and Heavy Metals in Infant Formula Milk Brands Available in Pakistani Markets.

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) after its bioconversion from aflatoxin B1 in animal liver becomes the part of milk while heavy metals get entry into milk and milk products during handling in the supply chain. Aflatoxin M1 and heavy metals being toxic compounds are needed to be monitored continuously to avoid any ailments among consumers of foods contaminated with such toxicants. Thirteen commercially available infant formula milk (IFM) brands available in Pakistani markets were analyzed for the quantitative determination of AFM1 and heavy metals through ELISA and atomic absorption spectrophotometer, respe

Infant formula alters surfactant protein A (SP-A) and SP-B expression in pulmonary epithelial cells.

Surfactant proteins A (SP-A) and SP-B are critical in the ability of pulmonary surfactant to reduce alveolar surface tension and provide innate immunity. Aspiration of infant milk formula can lead to lung dysfunction, but direct effects of aspirated formula on surfactant protein expression in pulmonary cells have not been described. The hypothesis that infant formula alters surfactant protein homeostasis was tested in vitro by assessing surfactant protein gene expression in cultured pulmonary epithelial cell lines expressing SP-A and SP-B that were transiently exposed (6 hr) to infant formula.

Dry stress and survival time of Enterobacter sakazakii and other Enterobacteriaceae in dehydrated powdered infant formula.

Powdered infant formula is not a sterile product, and opportunistic pathogens could multiply in the reconstituted product, resulting in neonatal infections. In this study, the generation of sublethally injured Enterobacteriaceae during desiccation and their persistence in dehydrated powdered infant formula was assessed during a 2.5-year period. The study included 27 strains of Enterobacter sakazakii, Enterobacter cloacae, Salmonella Enteritidis, Citrobacter koseri, Citrobacter freundii, Escherichia coli, Escherichia vulneris, Pantoea spp., Klebsiella oxytoca, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Infant Formula Affordability Negatively Impacts Parental Wellbeing, Financial Security and Safe Feeding Practices in the UK.

In the UK, media reporting has highlighted the impact of high infant formula prices upon parent wellbeing and feeding practices. We explored this issue through surveys (n = 261) and interviews (n = 20) with parents who were struggling to afford infant formula, and surveys (n = 137) and interviews (n = 21) with stakeholders in infant feeding, parenting and food insecurity. Almost all parents and stakeholders identified a detrimental impact upon parental mental and physical health, relationships, social and emotional wellbeing. Parents described feeling shame, anxiety and sadness, compounded if
