Lessons From Analyzing the Medical Costs of Civilian Terror Victims: Planning Resources Allocation for a New Era of Confrontations.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points: Across the globe, the threat from terrorist attacks is rising, which requires a careful assessment of long-term medical support. We found 3 major sources of costs: hospital expenditures, mental health services dedicated to acute stress reactions, and ambulatory follow-up. During the first year, most of the costs were related to hospitalization and support for stress relief. During the second year, ambulatory and rehabilitation costs continued to grow. Public health specialists should consider these major components of costs and their evolution over time to properly a

Clinical outcomes from a mid-western opioid treatment program during covid-19 emergency regulations: a brief report on the effect of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) use on take home methadone access.

The study examines whether tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) use alone affected sustainability of weekly take-home methadone medication among a small sample of 33 patients attending a single opioid treatment program, under special exception by state and federal governments during the Covid-19 pandemic. Kaplan Meier analyses of survival rates in months of eligibility for take-home methadone showed that the majority of patients with continuing THC use remained eligible for 10 months despite continued THC use. Majority were employed, insured, and housed stably, but Log Rank Tests on these predictor vari

The workers' compensation system: worker friend or foe?

BACKGROUND: The workers' compensation system was designed to help injured workers who have substantial medical expenses and perhaps have lost a great deal of income. This study determines both similarities and differences in how workers experience their interactions with the workers' compensation systems in Florida and Wisconsin. METHODS: Ethnographic open-ended interviews with 204 workers from Florida and 198 workers in Wisconsin were conducted. All the workers had back injuries in 1990 and were either paid workers' compensation temporary disability benefits for at least 4 weeks or received

To what extent are psychiatrists aware of the comorbid somatic illnesses of their patients with serious mental illnesses? - a cross-sectional secondary data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Somatic comorbidities are a serious problem in patients with severe mental illnesses. These comorbidities often remain undiagnosed for a long time. In Germany, physicians are not allowed to access patients' health insurance data and do not have routine access to documentation from other providers of health care. Against this background, the objective of this article was to investigate psychiatrists' knowledge of relevant somatic comorbidities in their patients with severe mental illnesses. METHODS: Cross-sectional secondary data analysis was performed using primary data from a pro

The effects of mental health parity on spending and utilization for bipolar, major depression, and adjustment disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires insurance parity for mental health/substance use disorder and general medical services. Previous research found that parity did not increase mental health/substance use disorder spending and lowered out-of-pocket spending. Whether parity's effects differ by diagnosis is unknown. The authors examined this question in the context of parity implementation in the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program. METHOD: The authors compared mental health/substance use disorder treatment use and spending before and after parity

Financial support systems for cancer care in India: A qualitative exploratory study.

PURPOSE: The financial toxicity (FT) of cancer care adversely impacts treatment initiation, compliance and completion in low-and middle-income countries like India. This qualitative study aimed to map the financial support systems for cancer care and associated barriers and facilitators in India. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with oncologists working in various settings (public/private, for-profit/not-for-profit, urban/rural). A deductive classification was first applied to organise support system resources into two categories: (1) resources for treatment centres and (2)

Promoting equitable access to financial services to end financial discrimination against cancer survivors in Europe: scientific and ethical reasons.

BACKGROUND: Cancer incidence and prevalence of cancer survivors are rising. The European Cancer Information System projects 3.25 million new cases in the EU-27 by 2040 versus 2.74 million in 2022; currently, 23 million people live with a previous cancer diagnosis. Cancer survivors face physical, psychosocial, and economic sequelae. Financial toxicity (FT)-the objective and subjective economic burden of cancer-compromises adherence, quality of life, and survival outcomes. Furthermore, mandatory disclosure of a cancer history when seeking loans or insurance further increases FT. MATERIALS AND M

Nonmedical Factors Influencing Early Deaths in Burns: A Study of the National Burn Repository.

It is well-established that survival in burn injury is primarily dependent on three factors: age, percent total-body surface area burned (%TBSA), and inhalation injury. However, it is clear that in other (nonburn) conditions, nonmedical factors may influence mortality. Even in severe burns, patients undergoing resuscitation may survive for a period of time before succumbing to infection or other complications. In some cases, though, families in conjunction with caregivers may choose to withdraw care and not resuscitate patients with large burns. We wanted to investigate whether any nonmedical

Adherence and Persistence Across Antidepressant Therapeutic Classes: A Retrospective Claims Analysis Among Insured US Patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).

BACKGROUND: Adherence and persistence to therapy, or how well a patient follows provider directions on frequency and time to discontinuation of prescribed medications, is associated with positive health outcomes, including decreased healthcare costs and patient mortality. A clear literature gap exists assessing adherence and persistence to antidepressants (ADs) in the major depressive disorder (MDD) population at clinically relevant time points and at the therapeutic class level. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed adherence and persistence to specific ADs, therapeutic classes, and AD therapy over
