Adoptive transfer of pregnancy-induced CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells reverses the increase in abortion rate caused by interleukin 17 in the CBA/JxBALB/c mouse model.

STUDY QUESTION: Could adoptive transfer of pregnancy-induced CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) reverse the increase in abortion rate caused by interleukin 17 (IL-17) in the CBA/J × BALB/c mouse model? SUMMARY ANSWER: The effects of exogenous IL-17 on increased abortion rate, as well as decreased transforming growth factor (TGF)-β and IL-10 expression, are reversed by a pre-mating transfusion of Tregs in a mouse model of pregnancy. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: IL-17 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine mainly expressed by T helper 17 cells, and plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis

Male Reproductive Morphology Across Latitudinal Clines and Under Long-Term Female Sex-Ratio Bias.

SynopsisRecent work in evolutionary ecology has capitalized on the species-specific, rapidly evolving nature of male reproductive traits, but it is unclear how the strength of sexual selection mechanisms, such as female choice and intersexual conflict, changes with ecological factors-shifts in latitude, elevation, and sex-ratio. Marginal habitats, such as those found at high elevation or latitude, might be expected to exert energetic hardships on males such that they do not invest heavily in reproductive structures. Conversely, males in these habitats may adapt to limited breeding opportunitie

Fgl2 prothrombinase expression in mouse trophoblast and decidua triggers abortion but may be countered by OX-2.

Spontaneous abortion of normal karyotype embryos in mice and in humans is associated with an increase in uterine T helper (Th) 1 type proinflammatory cytokines, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interferon-gamma and interleukin (IL)-1, and a deficiency of Th2/3 type cytokines, IL-4, IL-10, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta2. In mice, Th1 cytokines up-regulate a novel prothrombinase, fgl2, which via thrombin, leads to activation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes that terminate the pregnancy. Here we show that Th1 cytokines up-regulate fgl2 mRNA in fetal trophoblast and secondary decidua

DNA-damaging agents show different kinetics in induction of heterothallic mating-type switching during growth after treatment in yeast.

Heterothallic mating-type switching in Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been shown to be inducible by DNA-damaging agents (Schiestl and Wintersberger, 1983). Different DNA-damaging agents differ greatly in their kinetics of induction during incubation after treatment. Irradiation with X-rays resulted in an increase in the frequency immediately after exposure and no further increase was seen during incubation after treatment. Nitrous acid and 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide, on the other hand, did not show any increase in frequency immediately after treatment, but require post-treatment incubation to prod

A review of factors that impact on the capacity of beef cattle females to conceive, maintain a pregnancy and wean a calf-Implications for reproductive efficiency in northern Australia.

A review of factors that may impact on the capacity of beef cattle females, grazing semi-extensive to extensive pastures in northern Australia, to conceive, maintain a pregnancy and wean a calf was conducted. Pregnancy and weaning rates have generally been used to measure the reproductive performance of herds. However, this review recognises that reproductive efficiency and the general measures associated with it more effectively describe the economic performance of beef cattle enterprises. More specifically, reproductive efficiency is influenced by (1) pregnancy rate which is influenced by (i

Mate choice, frequency dependence, and the maintenance of resistance to parasitism in a simultaneous hermaphrodite.

Biomphalaria glabrata are simultaneous hermaphroditic freshwater snails that act as intermediate hosts for the macroparasitic trematode Schistosoma mansoni, a causative agent of schistosomiasis. Heritability and strain-specificity of both snail resistance and susceptibility to schistosome infection have been demonstrated, genetic variability for which is maintained, in part, through trade-offs between high fitness costs associated with infection and those associated with resistance. However, despite such a high cost of resistance and a low prevalence of infection in natural snail populations,

Neurexin controls plasticity of a mature, sexually dimorphic neuron.

During development and adulthood, brain plasticity is evident at several levels, from synaptic structure and function to the outgrowth of dendrites and axons. Whether and how sex impinges on neuronal plasticity is poorly understood. Here we show that the sex-shared GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid)-releasing DVB neuron in Caenorhabditis elegans displays experience-dependent and sexually dimorphic morphological plasticity, characterized by the stochastic and dynamic addition of multiple neurites in adult males. These added neurites enable synaptic rewiring of the DVB neuron and instruct a functional s

Modulation of uterine responses in dogs: The divergent effects of semen and embryonal signals on steroidogenic receptors and selected immune system-related factors.

Although dogs lack the classical pregnancy recognition via embryo-derived anti-luteolytic signaling, precise embryo-maternal communication remains essential in establishing pregnancy. While previous studies confirmed uterine responses to pre-attachment embryos versus semen-exposed non-pregnant controls, they did not include non-mated, non-pregnant controls. Following the hypothesis that embryo-derived signaling differs from the responses induced by semen, the present project included three groups of dogs (d. 10-12 of pregnancy/corresponding dioestrus): non-mated, mated and pregnant, and mated

Mechanisms mediating false codling moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta (lepidoptera: Tortricidae), mating disruption using point-source pheromone dispensers.

BACKGROUND: False codling moth (FCM) is a polyphagous Tortricid moth that is a priority agricultural pest. Mating disruption shows potential as an environmentally friendly and sustainable control option against FCM in stone fruit, table grapes and citrus. How the technique alters the mate-finding ability of FCM and what factors are important to ensure the control success is uncertain. Recent work indicated that Lepidoptera are disrupted either competitively or non-competitively. No studies have yet been conducted on FCM to determine its disruptive mechanism. However, studies conducted on close

The effect of sexual selection on phenotypic diversification among human populations: A simulation study.

Despite the generally low level of inter-population genetic differentiation in humans as compared with great apes, it has long been acknowledged that there is a considerable amount of geographic variations in human phenotypes, for example, skin pigmentation, cranial morphology, and soft-tissue facial morphology, to name but a few. Indeed, recent studies have suggested that the extent of inter-population diversity in some human phenotypes is greater than expected from random drift alone. Such an excess of phenotypic diversity is often attributed to adaptation to local environment. However, this

Interactions between cycloheximide and T-locus alleles during mouse embryogenesis.

Female CD-1 mice were mated with CD-1 X T/ + F1 males that were heterozygous for the brachyury (T') semidominant lethal gene or were +/+. Fetuses from CD-1 X +/+ matings were normal when observed on gestation Day 17 (plug day = Day 0). Those from the CD-1 X T/+ cross exhibited the expected 1:1 ratio of short:normal tail lengths, but 10% of these fetuses were tailless, apparently due to factors in the CD-1 genotype that increased the expressivity of the T-gene with regard to reduction of tail length. Additional CD-1 females were mated with CD-1 X tw18/+ F1 males. Fetuses from the CD-1 X tw18/+

Pregnancy and parturition in dromedary camels II. Incidence, timing and factors affecting early pregnancy loss (EPL) and the outcome of twin pregnancies.

In this paper, we described the incidence of early pregnancy loss (EPL) both after natural mating and embryo transfer, evaluated risk factors, and summarized the outcome of twin pregnancies throughout gestation in dromedaries under reproductive care. Data were collected over seven breeding seasons at the world's largest camel dairy farm (study 1). In addition, we determined the timing of EPL and monitored serum progesterone (P4) concentration between Days 13-70 of gestation during one breeding season (study 2). In the first study, out of 2970 pregnancies, 507 cases (17.1%) of EPL were diagnose

The mushroom body D1 dopamine receptor controls innate courtship drive.

Mating is critical for species survival and is profoundly regulated by neuromodulators and neurohormones to accommodate internal states and external factors. To identify the underlying neuromodulatory mechanisms, we investigated the roles of dopamine receptors in various aspects of courtship behavior in Drosophila. Here, we report that the D1 dopamine receptor dDA1 regulates courtship drive in naïve males. The wild-type naïve males actively courted females regardless their appearance or mating status. On the contrary, the dDA1 mutant (dumb) males exhibited substantially reduced courtship towar

Ilex paraguariensis: Potential antioxidant on aluminium toxicity, in an experimental model of Alzheimer's disease.

Ilex paraguariensis, yerba mate is a native plant from the southern region of Brazil. Studies showed that yerba mate has an antioxidant potential, which could help to reduce the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases, as Alzheimer's Disease (AD). It's known that I. paraguariensis grows in acid soils with aluminium (Al), which is bioavailable in these soils. Al has a neurotoxic potential related with the progression of neurological disorders. This study aim was to evaluate the potential of I. paraguariensis in the etiology of AD using strains of Caenorhabditis elegans and the concentrati

Pharmacogenetic variation and metformin response.

Diabetes is a major health problem worldwide, and metformin, a traditional oral anti-hyperglycemic drug, is now believed to be the most widely prescribed antidiabetic drug. Metformin acts primarily by inhibiting hepatic glucose production and improving insulin sensitivity. Metformin is absorbed predominately by the small intestine and excreted in an unaltered form in the urine. The pharmacokinetics of metformin is primarily determined by membrane transporters, including the plasma membrane monoamine transporter (PMAT), the organic cation transporters (OCTs), the multidrug and toxin extrusion (

Pregnancy and murine thyroiditis: thyroglobulin immunization leads to fetal loss in specific allogeneic pregnancies.

Thyroid autoantibodies are risk factors in human pregnancy. To investigate the influence of autoimmune thyroiditis on pregnancy, we have studied the impact of murine experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) on pregnancy outcome by using thyroglobulin (Tg) immunized CBA/J (H2(k)) female mice. When Tg immunized mice were mated with BALB/c (H2(d)) males, only 57% (47/83) of pregnant mice maintained their conceptions compared with >85% of other strain combinations (P < 0.05). We also found that MHC class II antigens were expressed on placental cells from Tg immunized pregnant mice but not in cont

Factors affecting outcomes of embryo transfer in dromedary camels: A retrospective study.

The present study aimed to use a comprehensive approach for evaluating 12 factors related to embryo quality (shape, size and transparency), donors (age, ET type, number of recovered embryos and day of uterine flushing), recipients (age), males (age and individual variations) and environment (season and year) which could affect the outcome of ET in terms of pregnancy (PR) and pregnancy losses in dromedary camels. During three breeding seasons, 116 donor females were mated repeatedly at 12- to 14-day intervals by fertile male camels (n = 33) without stimulation of the ovaries (WSPO). Superovulat

Assortative fertilization and selection at larval stage in the mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis.

Assortative mating (prezygotic isolation) and reduced hybrid fitness (postzygotic isolation) are typically invoked to explain the stability of hybrid zones. In the tension zone model, these factors work in opposition to migration, which promotes genetic homogeneity. Many marine animals migrate over long distances through a planktonic larval stage. Therefore, strong reproductive isolation is needed to maintain stable marine hybrid zones. However, surprisingly little is known about mating preferences and hybrid fitness in marine organisms. Smooth-shelled mussels (Mytilus spp.) form a well-known
