KETAMINE, MEDETOMIDINE, AND MIDAZOLAM ANESTHESIA WITH AND WITHOUT BUTORPHANOL IN SLOW LORISES (NYCTICEBUS BENGALENSIS AND XANTHONYCTICEBUS SPECIES).

Slow lorises (Nycticebus bengalensis and Xanthonycticebus spp.) are endangered small nocturnal prosimians that are frequently rescued from the illegal wildlife trade in Southeast Asia. Routine health examinations under anesthesia are essential for their care but anesthetic protocols are based largely on protocols established for other prosimians, with limited species-specific data. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of adding butorphanol to a ketamine (6 mg/kg IM)-medetomidine (0.05 mg/kg IM)-midazolam (0.15 mg/kg IM) (KMM) anesthetic combination (KMMB) during health examinations of

Effect of repeated xylazine-ketamine or medetomidine-ketamine administration on selected reproductive parameters in male rats.

BACKGROUND: Sperm retrieval methods and surgical interventions are typically performed with the aid of anesthetic agents. In cases where the depth of anesthesia is insufficient, the procedure is often repeated. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the effects of repeated administration of xylazine-ketamine (XK) and medetomidine-ketamine (MK), as commonly used agents in laboratory animals, on sperm parameters, reproductive hormones, and testicular oxidative stress status. METHODS: A total of 60 rats were used in the study. The animals were divided to two groups of thirty animals each as XK o

Effects of a mixture of medetomidine, midazolam and butorphanol on anesthesia and blood biochemistry and the antagonizing action of atipamezole in hamsters.

Syrian golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) are useful laboratory rodents for studying human infectious diseases, metabolic diseases and cancer. In other rodents, such as mice and rats, a mixture of medetomidine, midazolam and butorphanol functions as a useful anesthetic, although it alters some blood biochemical parameters. In this study, we examined the effects of this mixture on anesthesia and blood biochemical parameters, and the action of atipamezole, a medetomidine antagonist, in hamsters. Intramuscular injection of a mixture of medetomidine, midazolam and butorphanol at doses of 0.15,

EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF A MEDETOMIDINE-AZAPERONE-ALFAXALONE COMBINATION IN CAPTIVE WHITE-TAILED DEER (ODOCOILEUS VIRGINIANUS).

Alfaxalone is a neurosteroid that interacts with gamma-aminobutyric type A receptors to produce central nervous system depression and muscle relaxation. The effects of alfaxalone vary from sedation to general anesthesia. Alfaxalone is synergistic with other tranquilizers and sedatives and therefore has the potential to improve existing alpha-2 adrenergic agonist-based combinations used for wildlife immobilization. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy and cardiopulmonary effects of a medetomidine-azaperone-alfaxalone (MAA) combination in captive white-tailed deer (Odocoileu

Injection anaesthesia with fentanyl-midazolam-medetomidine in adult female mice: importance of antagonization and perioperative care.

Injection anaesthesia is commonly used in laboratory mice; however, a disadvantage is that post-anaesthesia recovery phases are long. Here, we investigated the potential for shortening the recovery phase after injection anaesthesia with fentanyl-midazolam-medetomidine by antagonization with naloxone-flumazenil-atipamezole. In order to monitor side-effects, the depth of anaesthesia, heart rate (HR), core body temperature (BT) and concentration of blood gases, as well as reflex responses, were assessed during a 50 min anaesthesia. Mice were allowed to recover from the anaesthesia in their home c

Non-invasive evaluation of the haemodynamic effects of high-dose medetomidine in healthy cats for semen collection.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess non-invasively the cardiovascular effects of high-dose medetomidine on healthy male cats undergoing semen collection. METHODS: Haemodynamic evaluations were assessed on the basis of clinical examination, systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and transthoracic echocardiographic examination. Eight client owned, male domestic shorthair cats were sedated with a bolus of medetomidine intramuscularly (IM; 0.13 mg/kg), and semen collection was performed. A second transthoracic echocardiographic examination and SAP measurement were carried out 15 mins after sedation.

Reversible immobilization of free-ranging snow leopards (panthera uncia) with a combination of medetomidine and tiletamine-zolazepam.

Conservation and research of the elusive snow leopard (Panthera uncia) have been hampered by inadequate knowledge about its basic life history. Global positioning system (GPS) collars can provide useful information, but there has been limited information available on safe capture methods, drug doses, and efficacy for effective immobilization of free-ranging snow leopards. We describe a drug protocol using a combination of medetomidine and tiletamine-zolazepam for the chemical immobilization of free-ranging snow leopards. We also describe physiologic responses to immobilization drugs, including

Evaluation of medetomidine-ketamine and atipamezole for reversible anesthesia of free-ranging gray wolves (Canis lupus).

Twenty-eight anesthetic events were carried out on 24 free-ranging Scandinavian gray wolves (Canis lupus) by darting from a helicopter with 5 mg medetomidine and 250 mg ketamine during winter in 2002 and 2003. Mean±SD doses were 0.162±0.008 mg medetomidine/kg and 8.1±0.4 mg ketamine/kg in juveniles (7-10 mo old) and 0.110±0.014 mg medetomidine/kg and 5.7±0.5 mg ketamine/kg in adults (>19 mo old). Mean±SD induction time was shorter (P<0.01) in juveniles (2.3±0.8 min) than in adults (4.1±0.6 min). In 26 cases, the animals were completely immobilized after one dart. Muscle relaxation was good, pa

Subeffective doses of nitroparacetamol (NCX-701) enhance the antinociceptive activity of the α₂-adrenoceptor agonist medetomidine.

The α₂-adrenergic system is involved in pain processing and inflammation-induced sensitization. α₂-adrenoceptor agonists induce analgesia, and this effect is greater when administered in combination with other analgesics. In the present study, we assessed a possible enhancement of antinociception combining the α₂-adrenoceptor agonist medetomidine with subeffective doses of NCX701 (nitroparacetamol). The effects of the drugs were studied in spinal cord neuronal responses from adult male Wistar rats with carrageenan-induced inflammation, using the recording of single motor unit technique. The ex
