Mindfulness-based and mindfulness-informed interventions for internet use disorders in adolescents and young adults: A three-level random-effects meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The pervasive integration of the internet into daily life has rendered Internet Use Disorders (IUDs) a particular threat to adolescents and young adults, whose vulnerability is amplified by a developmental stage characterized by ongoing neurodevelopment and self-exploration. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of mindfulness-based and mindfulness-informed interventions (MBIIs) for this population. METHODS: Seven databases were searched from inception to April 2026 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Risk of bias was assessed using the Revis

Can mindfulness have long-term impact on patients with fibromyalgia? A two-year prospective follow-up study of a mindfulness-based intervention.

To examine changes in symptoms and health status in patients with fibromyalgia (FM) 24 months after participating in the mindfulness-based group-program, the Vitality Training (VTP), followed by physical exercise counselling. Seventy-six participants, mean age (range) 43 (26-52), females 69 (91%), diagnosed with FM according to the ACR 2011-criteria received the VTP in a previous randomised controlled trial. Control group participants could receive the VTP after a 12-month observation period, therefore only data from the intervention group were analysed in the present study. Self-reported data

The effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for reducing rumination and improving mindfulness and self-compassion in patients with treatment-resistant depression.

Introduction Depression is one of the most important psychiatric disorders, and the rate of recurrence is high. The heavy cost burden of depression is probably due to treatment-resistant depression. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Method The present study was a quasi-experimental study conducted with twenty-four patients with treatment-resistant depression. Participants were selected by purposive sampling and randomly assigned to two groups, an experimental group an

Change in Brain Oscillations as a Mechanism of Mindfulness-Meditation, Cognitive Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Low Back Pain.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological treatments for chronic low back pain (CLBP) are effective. However, limited research has investigated their neurophysiological mechanisms. This study examined electroencephalography- (EEG-) assessed brain oscillation changes as potential mechanisms of cognitive therapy (CT), mindfulness-meditation (MM), and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) for CLBP. The a priori bandwidths of interest were changes in theta, alpha and beta power, measured at pre- and post-treatment. DESIGN: A secondary analysis of a clinical trial. SETTING: University of Queensland Psycholog

Low levels of mindfulness in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have shown that mindfulness therapy and attention tasks may benefit patients with seizure disorders. However, there is limited research on levels of mindfulness and electroencephalogram (EEG) power during a mindfulness task in these patients. This study evaluated levels of mindfulness in patients admitted to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) and its relationship with EEG power during a mindfulness task. METHODS: 71 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) patients completed a validated mindfulness questionnaire (the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire) and consented to part

Neural mechanisms of mindfulness-based stress reduction in asthma.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) can improve symptoms of chronic inflammation; in asthma, improving asthma control and reducing airway inflammation. Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying these salubrious outcomes could help identify neuroimmune phenotypes and personalize interventions. Adults with asthma were randomized to 8 weeks of MBSR (n = 38) or a wait-list group (n = 34). Clinically relevant asthma-related and psychological outcomes were measured, and task-based fMRI data were acquired during exposure to emotional cues at baseline, post-intervention, and 6mo follow-up.

[Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy in the treatment of depression].

This review presents the status of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) in the treatment of active depression. The theoretical underpinnings of MBCT are outlined, along with potential mediating and moderating factors influencing treatment outcomes. Several randomised controlled trials indicate that MBCT demonstrates efficacy comparable to other evidence-based interventions. However, MBCT is not yet widely available in mental health services in Denmark. Further research is needed to evaluate long-term effects and to identify which patient subgroups may benefit most from MBCT.

Sustainable benefits of mindfulness training in health professions education.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare work and even studies towards a healthcare profession is associated with a high prevalence of distress. According to recent meta-analyses, half of the medical students worldwide suffer from burn out prior to residency, and 34% of nursing students suffer from depression. The aim of this study was to investigate healthcare students' long-term experiences of mindfulness training, and whether, how and why students were continuing their mindfulness practice after graduation. Further, to assess if background characteristics were associated with continuing mindfulness practice.

Does Brief Mindfulness Intervention Increase Performance? An Exploratory Study.

The effects of mindfulness-based interventions combined with a running programme on physical performance need further investigation. Studies often proposed a long mindfulness intervention with a low-intensity physical activity. This study aims to investigate the effects on physical performance of a brief mindfulness intervention with a running programme. Sixty-five trained runners were randomised in brief mindfulness or control groups. Intermittent maximum speed, heart rate variability and ratings of perceived exertion were performed at baseline, at 4 weeks and 8 weeks. Fat mass and physical f

Seasickness Alleviation based on a Mindfulness Brain-Computer Interface.

Seasickness is a common condition that negatively affects both the experience of passengers and the operating performance of maritime personnel. Techniques aimed at redirecting attention have been proposed to alleviate motion sickness symptoms; however, their effectiveness has not yet been rigorously verified, especially in maritime environments, which present unique challenges due to the prolonged and severe motion conditions. This research introduces a mindfulness brain-computer interface (BCI) specifically designed to redirect attention and alleviate seasickness. The system employs a single

Examining the Relationships between Mindfulness and Tobacco Craving Factors.

BACKGROUND: Relationships between mindfulness and general craving have been documented. However, there is still no data regarding relationships between mindfulness and the different craving factors. METHODS: Using data from an online survey among hospital workers smoking tobacco in France (n = 127), we performed linear regression models with the four craving factors as outcomes, and dispositional mindfulness as explanatory variable. RESULTS: After adjusting for nicotine dependence, mindfulness was negatively associated with general craving and three out of four craving factors (emotionality,

The Relevance of Mindfulness and Thought Suppression to Scrupulosity.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relevance of the mindfulness and thought suppression to scrupulosity, or religious obsessions. It was hypothesized that scrupulosity would be negatively associated trait mindfulness and positively associated with thought suppression. It was also hypothesized that thought suppression and mindfulness would mediate the association between scrupulosity and symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A survey-based study was conducted to test these hypotheses in a large, nonreferred sample. In particular, undergraduate university students completed

Effects of Mindfulness on Diabetes Mellitus: Rationale and Overview.

UNLABELLED: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an emerging global healthcare problem and its prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate. Despite improvements in both medical and pharmacological therapies, a complex medical condition may demand a diversified approach, such as: drug therapy, healthy diet and exercises, diabetes education programs, adherence to medical treatment and active participation of the patients in their lifestyle changes, such as stress management. The concept of mindfulness is here defined as the awareness that unfolds from the intention to attentively observe the current exper

Mindfulness and asthma symptoms: A study among college students.

INTRODUCTION: Given the known link between asthma and stress as well as the link between mindfulness and stress, we explore the possible association between trait mindfulness and asthma-related diagnosis and symptoms with a cross-sectional study. METHOD: In 2014, we surveyed a sample of college students in their freshman year, from a public university in Shanghai, China. We used three multilevel logistic regressions to estimate the association between trait mindfulness (measured by Mindful Awareness Attention Scale, MAAS) and self-report of ever having an asthma diagnosis, ever having had per

Dissociation and mindfulness in patients with auditory verbal hallucinations.

The very few studies relating mindfulness and dissociation have found a negative association between them (depersonalization and absorption). However, all of these studies have been done in nonclinical populations, and there are no data on the relationship between these variables in psychiatric patients with auditory hallucinations. This study was designed to study the relationship between mindfulness and the two dissociative variables, absorption and depersonalization, as well as their predictive power for the severity of auditory hallucinations and the distress they cause in a clinical popul

"Off with the old": mindfulness practice improves backward inhibition.

Mindfulness practice has been linked to reduced depressive rumination and described as involving inhibition of information that has been relevant in the past and is no longer relevant in the present moment. Backward inhibition (BI) is considered to be one of the purest measures of task set inhibition, and impaired BI has been linked to depressive rumination. BI was contrasted with Competitor Rule Suppression (CRS), which is another phenomenon observed in task switching, yet one which involves episodic memory tagging of information that is currently conflicting rather than active inhibition. Reducing teachers' psychological distress through a mindfulness training program.

Teachers constitute one of the professional collectives most affected by psychological problems. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study is to examine the efficacy of a mindfulness training programme to reduce psychological distress in a group of teachers. The sample comprised 68 teachers of Secondary School Education, from various public schools; half of them formed the experimental group, and the another half the control group. The levels of psychological distress were measured, in both groups, by the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R) before and after the application of the programme. S

Mindfulness meditation for symptom reduction in fibromyalgia: psychophysiological correlates.

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia, a chronic pain syndrome, is often accompanied by psychological distress and increased basal sympathetic tone. In a previous report it was shown that mindfulness-based stress-reduction (MBSR) reduced depressive symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia with gains maintained at two months follow-up (Sephton et al., Arthr Rheum 57:77-85, 2007). This second study explores the effects of MBSR on basal sympathetic (SNS) activation among women with fibromyalgia. METHODS: Participants (n = 24) responded to a television news appearance, newspaper, and radio advertisements. Effec

Mindfulness meditation and substance use in an incarcerated population.

Despite the availability of various substance abuse treatments, alcohol and drug misuse and related negative consequences remain prevalent. Vipassana meditation (VM), a Buddhist mindfulness-based practice, provides an alternative for individuals who do not wish to attend or have not succeeded with traditional addiction treatments. In this study, the authors evaluated the effectiveness of a VM course on substance use and psychosocial outcomes in an incarcerated population. Results indicate that after release from jail, participants in the VM course, as compared with those in a treatment-as-usua
