Mite fauna and mite antigen detection in house dust found in residential areas in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines.

Dust mites are a medically important group of animals commonly found in carpets and mattresses in houses. Antigens in their feces cause allergic reactions such as asthma and contact dermatitis. Dust samples were vacuum-collected in a special collecting bag from a one square meter area of living room floors of 100 randomly sampled houses in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines for one minute. Chromato-immunoassay ELISA (Mitey Checker) was used to detect mite antigenicity. Twenty-three species of mites were identified belonging to 7 families. Of these, Blomia tropicalis (265 mites/g of dust in 87% of

In-vivo allergenic potency of Siriraj Mite Allergen Vaccine (SMAV) comparing with standardized vaccine in mite-sensitive patients.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of allergic diseases, particularly asthma and allergic rhinitis, has increased tremendously in Thailand and worldwide. House dust mite (HDM) is the major IgE sensitizer among allergic children and adults. We have developed local standardized mite allergen extracts, Siriraj Mite Allergen Vaccine (SMAV) from Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp) and Dermatophagoides farinae (Df) from our source materials which were highly purified (99%). OBJECTIVE: To compare in-vivo allergenic potency of both SMAV Dp and Df with commercial standardized mite allergen vaccine by using sk

Analysis of ectoparasites (chigger mites, gamasid mites, fleas and sucking lice) of the Yunnan red-backed vole (Eothenomys miletus) sampled throughout its range in southwest China.

The Yunnan red-backed vole Eothenomys miletus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) is an endemic rodent species and reservoir host of zoonoses in southwest China. Based on a large host sample (2463 voles collected from 39 localities between 2001 and 2013), a general analysis of four categories of ectoparasite (fleas, sucking lice, chigger mites and gamasid mites) on E. miletus across its entire range of distribution was made. This analysis identified a total of 71 895 ectoparasites belonging to 320 species (30 species of flea, 9 of sucking louse, 106 of gamasid mite and 175 of chigger mite) with a high prev

Identification of guanine and hematin as arrestment pheromones of poultry red mites, Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae) and their application in mite control.

Dermanyssus gallinae, also known as the poultry red mite (PRM), is one of widespread ectoparasite in the poultry industry worldwide, causing direct and indirect detriments to poultry as well as substantial financial losses. Novel control methods are urgently needed to improve the current acaricide-based control of D. gallinae. The control approach based on arrestment pheromone is environment-friendly but the related research is limited in PRMs. In the present study we found two compounds from the mite feces acting as arrestment pheromones of D. gallinae, which could lead to mite arrestment upo

Characterization of a serine protease homologous to house dust mite group 3 allergens from the scabies mite Sarcoptes scabiei.

The scabies mite, Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, infests human skin, causing allergic reactions and facilitating bacterial infection by Streptococcus sp., with serious consequences such as rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. To identify a possible drug target or vaccine candidate protein, we searched for homologues of the group 3 allergen of house dust mites, which we subsequently identified in a cDNA library. The native protein, designated Sar s 3, was shown to be present in the mite gut and excreted in fecal pellets into mite burrows within the upper epidermis. The substrate specif

Lack of de novo sensitization to tropomyosin in a group of mite-allergic patients treated by house dust mite-specific immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: There is some evidence that specific immunotherapy may induce de novo sensitization to proteins contained in the allergen extract. This raises the possibility that the novel sensitization to cross-reacting allergens may cause food allergies. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess whether injection of mite-specific immunotherapy (SIT) may induce sensitization to shrimp tropomyosin. METHODS: Seventy mite-allergic subjects who did not show any shrimp sensitization at baseline were followed up for at least 3 years. Thirty-one of them underwent a 3-year SIT course, 39 served a

Rose rosette emaravirus dynamics in eriophyoid mites: implications for virus transmission.

Understanding the interaction between rose rosette emaravirus (RRV) and its vectors is pivotal in addressing the epidemic outbreak of rose rosette disease. This study employed quantitative real-time RT-PCR to assess RRV concentration in Phyllocoptes fructiphilus and P. adalius, providing insights into the viral dynamics and vector competency. Our findings suggest an increase in virus titer within P. fructiphilus, a confirmed vector species, unlike P. adalius, highlighting its non-vector status. Furthermore, the study highlights the variability in virus concentration in mites over time, underli

Diet optimization for rearing Transeius montdorensis predatory mites under laboratory conditions.

The predatory mite Transeius montdorensis (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is a biological control agent against a range of insect pests like thrips, whiteflies, broad mites and russet mites across protected crops. Optimizing diet for rearing T. montdorensis under laboratory conditions is crucial for improving their application in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. Here, we evaluated the development and reproduction of T. montdorensis when fed on four different diets, including cattail pollen (Typha latifolia), living dried fruit mites (Carpoglyphus lactis), frozen C. lactis eggs, and a mixed die

Raising awareness of Demodex mites: a neglected cause of skin disease.

BACKGROUND: Demodex mites are among the most prevalent human parasites. While commonly found on healthy individuals, an overpopulation of this arachnid resident of human skin triggers demodicosis, a neglected yet widely prevalent disease with considerable skin and eye morbidity. Despite its health impact, demodicosis remains overshadowed by other common skin diseases. This neglect has significant consequences for individual and public health, which require a paradigm shift in our understanding and management of this ubiquitous ectoparasite. We reviewed the literature to re-evaluate the pathoge

In vitro culture and morphological observation of human eye demodex mites.

The prevalence of human Demodex mites has surged in recent years, prompting significant concern among both patients and the medical community. This study aimed to investigate the survival duration and morphological alterations of Demodex folliculorum under diverse temperature conditions and in various culture media. We employed the eyelash sampling technique to procure the mites. The collected specimens were then subjected to culture at two distinct temperature ranges (16-22 °C and 4 °C) across a spectrum of media, including 30% tea tree oil (TTO), phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), pure water,

Innate type 2 immunity controls hair follicle commensalism by Demodex mites.

Demodex mites are commensal parasites of hair follicles (HFs). Normally asymptomatic, inflammatory outgrowth of mites can accompany malnutrition, immune dysfunction, and aging, but mechanisms restricting Demodex outgrowth are not defined. Here, we show that control of mite HF colonization in mice required group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s), interleukin-13 (IL-13), and its receptor, IL-4Ra-IL-13Ra1. HF-associated ILC2s elaborated IL-13 that attenuated HFs and epithelial proliferation at anagen onset; in their absence, Demodex colonization led to increased epithelial proliferation and replace
