[Nicotine in neuropsychiatric movement disorders].

Nicotine has various effects in the CNS, especially in dopaminergic and cholinergic systems, relevant in pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric movement disorders. Nicotine acutely reduce the symptomatology in Parkinson's disease. In neuroleptic-induced Parkinsonism (NIP) acute nicotine application induces positive changes of symptomatology. Chronic application, however, leads to a greater likelihood of NIP. The results concerning tardive dyskinesia are not consistent, but nicotine tends to exercise a positive influence on basic mechanisms. In the Gilles-de-la-Tourette syndrome nicotine reduces t

Movement disorders in multiple sclerosis.

Movement disorders (MD), other than tremor, associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) occur infrequently. We report 14 new cases of whom nine had dystonia, three parkinsonism, and two had myoclonus. We also reviewed 135 such cases from the literature. From an analysis of the individual MDs and the site of the lesions described, we conclude that paroxysmal dystonias (tonic spasms), ballism/chorea, and palatal myoclonus can be caused by demyelinating lesions. Parkinsonism, dystonia, and other types of myoclonus, however, often appear to be coincidental.

Supranuclear disorders of eye movement.

Eye movements are the result of activity in discrete systems. Saccades and smooth pursuit movements respond to target position and target velocity respectively. Compensatory responses to movements that alter the position of the eyes in space depend upon the vestibular and optokinetic systems. Vergence movements allow fusion and binocular vision. Eye movement abnormalities of supranuclear origin may be divided into nystagmus, other ocular oscillations, saccadic dysfunction, smooth pursuit dysfunction, gaze palsy, tonic deviation, and vergence disability. An algorithm for the analysis of supranu

Movement disorders in bacterial meningitis.

Movement disorders developed in five children, ages 6 to 21 months, during the course of bacterial meningitis caused by Hemophilus influenzae (one), Streptococcus pneumoniae (one), Neisseria meningitidis (one), or Mycobacterium tuberculosis (two). Athetosis, choreoathetosis, and hemiballismus occurred, ranging in duration from hours to months. Cranial computed tomography, performed in four cases, showed no lesion of the basal ganglia. The movements were of such abrupt onset and severity that in four cases they were initially misinterpreted as seizures, and anticonvulsant therapy was contemplat

[Gastrointestinal disorders in hyperkinetic movement disorders and ataxia].

Disorders of the gastrointestinal tract in patients suffering from hypokinetic movement disorders, and in particular Parkinson's disease, have increasingly been the subject of more intensive neuromedical research. So far, few data are available for patients with hyperkinetic movement disorders and ataxias. This review article summarizes the currently available and relevant publications on this topic. The particular focus is on essential tremor, restless legs syndrome, Huntington's disease and the group of hereditary ataxias. Further intensive research will be necessary in the future to collect

Thyroid Disorders and Movement Disorders-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: There is overlap between movement disorders and neuroendocrine abnormalities. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: To provide a systematic review on the association of thyroid dysfunction and movement disorders. Thyroid physiological function and classical thyroid disorders highlighting typical and atypical manifestations including movement disorders, as well as diagnostic procedures, and treatments are discussed. RESULTS: Hypothyroidism may be associated with hypokinetic and hyperkinetic disorders. There is debate whether their concomitance reflects a causal link, is coincidence, or the resu

Gastrointestinal disorders in hyperkinetic movement disorders and ataxia.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders have been thoroughly investigated in hypokinetic disorders such as Parkinson's disease, but much less is known about GI disorders in hyperkinetic movement disorders and ataxia. The aim of this review is to draw attention to the GI disorders that are associated with these movement disorders. METHODS: References for this systematic review were identified by searches of PubMed through May 2020. Only publications in English were reviewed. RESULTS: Data from 249 articles were critically reviewed, compared, and integrated. The most frequently reported GI

Hyperkinetic movement disorders in congenital disorders of glycosylation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) represent an increasing number of rare inherited metabolic diseases associated with abnormal glycan metabolism and disease onset in infancy or early childhood. Most CDG are multisystemic diseases mainly affecting the central nervous system. The aim of the current study was to investigate hyperkinetic movement disorders in patients affected by CDG and to characterize phenomenology based on CDG subtypes. METHODS: Subjects were identified from a cohort of patients with CDG who were referred to the University Hospital of Catania,

Neuropathology and pathogenesis of extrapyramidal movement disorders: a critical update-I. Hypokinetic-rigid movement disorders.

Extrapyramidal movement disorders include hypokinetic rigid and hyperkinetic or mixed forms, most of them originating from dysfunction of the basal ganglia (BG) and their information circuits. The functional anatomy of the BG, the cortico-BG-thalamocortical, and BG-cerebellar circuit connections are briefly reviewed. Pathophysiologic classification of extrapyramidal movement disorder mechanisms distinguish (1) parkinsonian syndromes, (2) chorea and related syndromes, (3) dystonias, (4) myoclonic syndromes, (5) ballism, (6) tics, and (7) tremor syndromes. Recent genetic and molecular-biologic c

Quality of life in functional movement disorders is as altered as in organic movement disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with functional movement disorders (FMD) often report a disability and psychiatric comorbidities. However, few studies have compared these aspects in FMD and in organic movement disorders (OMD). The objectives were to compare QoL and psychiatric comorbidities of FMD and OMD patients. METHODS: Twenty-one and 30 FMD patients were compared to 21 and 30 sex- and age-matched dystonia and Parkinson patients respectively. QoL was assessed using the Parkinson's Disease Summary Index (PDSI). Psychiatric comorbidities were screened with the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interv

The Neuropsychology of Movement and Movement Disorders: Neuroanatomical and Cognitive Considerations.

This paper highlights major developments over the past two to three decades in the neuropsychology of movement and its disorders. We focus on studies in healthy individuals and patients, which have identified cognitive contributions to movement control and animal work that has delineated the neural circuitry that makes these interactions possible. We cover advances in three major areas: (1) the neuroanatomical aspects of the "motor" system with an emphasis on multiple parallel circuits that include cortical, corticostriate, and corticocerebellar connections; (2) behavioral paradigms that have
