Electromyography and nerve conduction studies in Friedreich's ataxia and autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS).

Twenty four ataxic patients were investigated with electromyography and nerve conduction studies. They were divided in two groups according to the area they came from, the evolution of the disease, and the clinical signs. Group I patients from the Rimouski area displayed all the clinical and electrophysiological signs of Friedreich's ataxia. Group II comprised patients who presented with a new syndrome known as the autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS). Although the clinical evolution was better in the latter, there were more electromyographic signs of denervation

Evaluation of Side-to-Side Differences in Lower Extremity Sensory Nerve Action Potential (SNAP) Amplitude in Relation to Motor Nerve Conduction Studies.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Anatomical variations and technical factors can lead to side-to-side differences in nerve conduction studies, potentially causing false positive diagnoses. This study aimed to define normal limits of side-to-side differences in sural and superficial peroneal (SP) sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitudes, considering their association with lower extremity motor nerves. METHODS: Fifty healthy adults were assessed for lower extremity compound muscle action potential (CMAP) and SNAP amplitudes. The upper limit of side-to-side differences was defined as the mean plus

Relationship of obesity indices with clinical severity and nerve conduction studies in females presenting with median nerve compression neuropathy at the wrist.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is considered to be one of the most common peripheral nerve disorders with female preponderance which significantly reduces work efficacy and needs further research on its preventable factors, especially obesity. We studied the effects of obesity indices on Phalen's test duration and median nerve conduction study (NCS) parameters in patients presenting with CTS. METHODS: We examined 229 female patients presenting with clinical features of CTS. Clinical examinations including Phalen's test, median NCSs, and body composition were evaluated. Obesity indic

Sonographic measurement of cross-sectional area of the median nerve in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome: correlation with nerve conduction studies.

PURPOSE: To assess the usefulness of sonographic measurement of the median nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and grading of its severity using nerve conduction (NC) studies as the standard. METHOD: The CSA of the median nerve was measured at the tunnel inlet and outlet using the ellipse formula and automatic tracing in 72 hands with suspicion of CTS. RESULT: The lack of inter-reader reliability led to excluding CSA measurements obtained at the tunnel outlet. Based on the receiver operating characteristic curves, the following cut-off points for

The study of diagnostic efficacy of nerve conduction study parameters in cervical radiculopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cervical Radiculopathy (CR) is a neurologic condition characterised by dysfunction of a cervical spinal nerve, the roots of the nerve, or both. Diagnostic criteria for CR are not well defined, and no universally accepted criteria for its diagnosis have been established. Clinical examination, radiological imaging and electrophysiologic evaluation are the different modalities to diagnose CR. The incidence of Cervical Spondylosis and related conditions is increasing in the present scenario and the use of radiologic examination is time consuming and uneconomical for the common Indian s

Effect of different cuff widths on the motor nerve conduction of the median nerve: an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: A bloodless operative field is considered mandatory for most surgical procedures on the upper and lower extremity. This is accomplished by using either an Esmarch bandage or a pneumatic tourniquet, but a number of complications are associated with both. Nerve palsy is one of the most frequently encountered complications of this procedure. Wider cuffs have been found to cause reduced risk of tourniquet induced injury to the underlying soft tissues than the narrower ones due to the fact that lower occlusion pressures are caused by the former. To address and investigate this question,

Nerve conduction velocity study of the upper limb in Raynaud's phenomenon.

A prospective study of upper limb nerve conduction velocity was performed in 39 subjects (9 males, 30 females, mean age 46.8 years) with idiopathic Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) and 18 patients (3 males, 15 females, mean age 49.9 years) with RP secondary to systemic sclerosis (SS). Five subjects with idiopathic RP (13%) showed slowing of sensory conduction velocity (SCV) of the distal median nerve, associated with delayed distal motor latency (DML) of the same nerve in three patients, without clinical signs or symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Three patients with secondary RP (17%) had red

Thoracic spinal nerve and root conduction: a magnetic stimulation study.

We describe a technique of magnetic coil (MC) stimulation of the thoracic spinal nerves and roots in 12 normal subjects and a patient with diabetes mellitus. We kept the MC flat against the vertebral column in the midline over T-7, T-8, and T-9 spinous processes and obtained compound muscle action potentials from the upper rectus abdominis, external oblique, and intercostal muscles. We obtained mean latencies to these muscles after stimulation in the posterior axillary line. We noted that the onset latencies remained fixed despite increasing the intensity of stimulation from 30% to 100% and on

A combined morphological and electrophysiological study of conduction block in peripheral nerve.

The reliability of the electrophysiological criterion of conduction block in determining the presence of focal demyelination in a peripheral nerve has been studied in an animal model. Demyelination was produced in the rat tibial nerve by one or two closely spaced microinjections of lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC). Histological and electrophysiological data were obtained on the acute lesion (up to 6 days), and during recovery (up to 11 weeks). Single LPC injections produced a lesion of very variable severity. Double injections more reliably produced a severe lesion with marked conduction block. S

Recurrent laryngeal motor nerve conduction studies in a rat model: Establishing an objective measure for investigating laryngeal innervation.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Disease or injury can cause neuromuscular changes to the larynx that can affect voice, breathing, and swallowing. Motor nerve conduction studies have had limited use in the study of laryngeal neurophysiology, despite their importance in other anatomic sites. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of performing recurrent laryngeal motor nerve conduction studies (rlMNCS) in a rat model. METHODS: rlMNCS were performed in 15 rats under anesthesia. A bipolar stimulating electrode was placed on the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) 5 mm below the cricoid cartilage. Vi

Effectiveness of ultrasonography and nerve conduction studies in the diagnosing of carpal tunnel syndrome: clinical trial on accuracy.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two diagnostic tests routinely used for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)-ultrasonography (US) and nerve conduction studies (NCS)-by comparing their accuracy based on surgical results, with the remission of paresthesia as the reference standard. METHODS: We enrolled 115 patients, all of the female gender with a high probability of a clinical diagnosis of CTS. All patients underwent US and NCS for a diagnosis and subsequent surgical treatment. As a primary outcome, the accuracy of the US and NCS diagnoses was measured

Diagnostic Significance of Ultrasonographic Measurements and Median-Ulnar Ratio in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Correlation with Nerve Conduction Studies.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We determined the reliability of ultrasonography (US) measurements for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and their correlation with symptom duration and electrophysiology findings. We determined whether the ratio of the median-to-ulnar cross-sectional areas (CSAs) can support CTS diagnoses. METHODS: The pisiform CSA (CSA(pisiform)), swelling ratio (SR), palmar bowing, and CSA(pisiform)/ulnar CSA (CSA(ulnar)) measurements made in two subgroups of CTS patients (having sensory affection alone or having both sensory and motor affection) were compared with controls. Use of nerve conduction studies and the pressure-specified sensory device in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Sixty-nine patients with signs of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) underwent nerve conduction studies (NCS) and testing with the Pressure-Specified Sensory Device (PSSD). A total of 102 tests were performed (28 bilateral). Twenty patients underwent a carpal tunnel release and were retested after 4 to 6 months. The Symptom Severity Score (SSS) was calculated before and after surgery. A control group of 20 hands in 10 asymptomatic volunteers underwent identical testing. The NCS sensitivity was 87% with a specificity of 90% whereas the PSSD sensitivity was 81% with a specificity of 65%. The combined

Utility of nerve conduction studies for carpal tunnel syndrome by family medicine, primary care, and internal medicine physicians.

INTRODUCTION: Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are increasingly being performed at the point-of-service by family medicine, primary care, and internal medicine (FM/PCP/IM) physicians. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common neuropathy often diagnosed with the aid of NCS. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a point-of-service NCS data registry was conducted; 1190 patients who underwent NCS by 613 FM/PCP/IM physician practices, for evaluation of CTS were analyzed. Utility measures included demographic and electrophysiological characteristics of study population, adherence to evidence-based test

Current practice in the use of nerve conduction studies in carpal tunnel syndrome by surgeons in the netherlands.

The current practice in and the opinion about the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome by surgeons in the Netherlands was evaluated in respect of the extent to which electrodiagnostic studies are used or needed to confirm the diagnosis. Questionnaires were sent to all Dutch surgeons who operate on patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. The response rate was 47% (324 out of 686). The majority of neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons seldom operate without electrodiagnostic confirmation in line with the Dutch consensus guideline on this subject. In contrast, plastic surgeons operate more often on

Correlating nerve conduction studies and clinical outcome measures on carpal tunnel syndrome: lessons from a randomized controlled trial.

The reported relationships between nerve conduction studies (NCS) and outcome measures in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are weak to moderate. However, selection of patients may have confounded nonrandomized studies. NCS have potentially great value in selecting patients for a specific treatment and in objectively assessing the efficacy of treatments in CTS, especially if they correlate significantly with clinical outcome measures. To investigate the relationship between clinical outcome measures for the severity of complaints and NCS in patients treated for CTS, data were obtained from a multic

[Motor nerve conduction study in McArdle disease: case report].

McArdle disease (glycogenosis type V) is a metabolic myopathy with symptoms of exercise intolerance caused by deficiency of the enzyme myophosphorylase. In these patients, the motor nerve conduction studies after a short period of maximal voluntary muscle contraction or repetitive stimulation reveals characteristic findings of the disease. A 37-year-old man presented symptoms of exercise intolerance, muscular fatigue and cramps in the beginning of the physical activity with "second wind" phenomenon. The motor nerve conduction studies after a voluntary contraction of 30 and 90 seconds presented
