Mandibular molar protraction: A comparison between fixed functional appliances and temporary anchorage devices.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to compare the efficiency of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) and fixed functional appliances (FFAs) for mandibular molar protraction. METHODS: Orthodontic records of 1050 consecutively treated patients with molar protraction were screened. Thirty-six records (22 females and 14 males; mean age, 17.4 years) were divided into two groups: TAD (21 subjects with 25 edentulous spaces) and FFA (15 subjects with 24 edentulous spaces). The primary outcome measure was the efficiency of protraction [magnitude and time required for protraction (rate) and anchor loss (AL)]

The effects of diode laser (660 nm) on the rate of tooth movements: an animal study.

Low-level laser has been indicated to have the capability to facilitate the differentiation of the osteoclastic and osteoblastic cells which are responsible for the bone remodeling process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of InGaAlP laser with a wavelength of 660 nm on the rate of tooth movement and histological status. Thirty male Wistar rats of 7 weeks old were selected for this study. The rats were randomly divided into two groups of 15 each to form the experimental (laser-irradiated) and control (non-irradiated) groups. The control group received unilateral orthodontic ap

Clinical and Patient-Reported Outcomes of Laceback Ligature in Fixed Orthodontic Treatment: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Laceback ligatures are passive stainless-steel auxiliaries tied from the first permanent molar hook to the canine bracket during the alignment phase of orthodontic fixed appliance treatment, predominantly in premolar extraction cases. Despite equivocal evidence on their effectiveness in controlling anterior tooth position, lacebacks are routinely used to stabilize flexible nickel-titanium archwires against masticatory forces. Their effects on 3 clinically important outcomes, oral hygiene, appliance complication rates, and patient-reported pain, have never been investigated in a ran

Digital treatment planning and clear aligners therapy: Current evidence-based perspectives in growing patients - A narrative review with case reports.

The mixed dentition phase represents a fundamental step for guiding occlusal development and addressing dento-skeletal discrepancies in growing patients. Among available modalities, clear aligners (CA) have emerged as a viable option in Phase I therapy, offering benefits in terms of aesthetics, hygiene, and comfort. The present narrative review explores current evidence on CA therapy in growing patients and analyses the biomechanical issues of CA therapy. Two clinical cases are presented to illustrate treatment protocols highlighting the importance of customized digital planning in the applica

Pain experience in adults undergoing treatment: A longitudinal evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: To quantify the intensity and duration of pain experience in adults over the initial three visits of fixed appliance-based orthodontic treatment. A secondary objective was to assess the relationship between pain experience and analgesic use, dental irregularity, gender, and age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study design was adopted. Fifty-eight adults undergoing fixed appliance treatment in five orthodontic practices recorded pain experience at four time points (4 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, and 7 days) following the initial bond-up appointment (T0) and first (T1

Treatment of a skeletal Class II malocclusion growing patient using clear aligners with solid occlusal blocks: A case report.

This case report describes a two-phase orthodontic treatment of an 11-year-old adolescent patient with a Class II malocclusion. Before orthodontic treatment, the patient exhibited adenoid hypertrophy, mouth breathing, and snoring. He was referred to an otolaryngologist and diagnosed with paediatric obstructive sleep apnoea (PedOSA), which was treated with tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. Thereafter, given that the patient was at the pubertal growth peak and preferred aesthetic appliances, clear aligner functional therapy was selected for orthodontic treatment. During the first phase (mandibula

Implant-enhanced tooth movement: indirect absolute anchorage.

Four case reports demonstrate the effectiveness of indirect anchorage in orthodontics. These cases demonstrate the variety of situations in which absolute anchorage can be applied. A maxillary premolar extraction case illustrates the effectiveness of anterior retraction with this technique. A maxillary posterior protraction case shows the ease with which space closure can be achieved. Dual-arch capability is demonstrated through a four-premolar extraction case. Lastly, a case of severe dental mutilation devoid of any anchor units under conventional methods depicts how effectively distal drivin

MTH herbst appliance, class II elastics and Paolone-Kaitsas functional appliance in mixed dentition class II patients: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: It is generally accepted that the ideal time to benefit from functional therapy in Class II patients is during the circumpubertal growth period (CVM 3-4). However, in severe cases, early intervention during the mixed dentition phase may be indicated, particularly to reduce the risk of dental trauma and to protect the child from potential bullying. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Manni Telescopic Herbst (MTH) appliance in young patients with mixed dentition, comparing the outcomes with two control groups: one treated with Class II elastics and a Wilson arch,

Clinical guidelines and planning for orthodontic-surgical treatment using clear aligners.

INTRODUCTION: Orthognathic surgery, a well-established procedure for correcting significant skeletal imbalances, addresses both aesthetic and functional concerns. Traditionally, fixed orthodontic appliances have been preferred due to their effectiveness in managing dental movements and ensuring postoperative stability. However, the increasing demand for more aesthetic and comfortable options has led to the growing use of clear aligners, even in complex surgical cases. Although aligners present some limitations, such as reduced control over certain dental movements and the need for greater pati

Efficiency of the skeletonized Pendulum K appliance for non-compliance maxillary molar distalization : A clinical pilot study.

PURPOSE: Conventional anchorage with exclusively intraorally anchored appliances for non-compliance molar distalization combines a palatal acrylic button with periodontal anchorage. This type of anchorage is critically discussed because of the temporary hygienic impairment of the palate and the uncertain anchoring quality of the button. A purely dentally/periodontally anchored Pendulum K appliance was developed, which is exclusively anchored via four occlusal rests. The aims of this pilot study were to examine the suitability of the skeletonized Pendulum K for distalization of maxillary molars

Efficiency evaluation of maxillary molar distalization using Invisalign based on palatal rugae registration.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to compare the predicted maxillary molar distalization with the achieved clinical outcome using the palatal rugae area for registration and superimposition of digital models. Understanding Invisalign efficiency may assist clinicians in predicting changes, thus applying specific measures to minimize the chance of midcourse correction later. METHODS: The study sample included 38 patients with a mean age of 25.4 years, eligible for Invisalign treatment and requiring distalization of maxillary molars. Two digital models were acquired using iTero intraoral scanner (A
