Microleakage at the abutment-implant interface of osseointegrated implants: a comparative study.

Microleakage can occur at the abutment-implant (A-I) interface in osseointegrated implants and may cause malodor and inflammation of peri-implant tissues. The degree of microleakage at the A-I interface of 5 implant systems was comparatively assessed at varying closing torques. Using colored tracing probes driven by a 2-atm pressure system, the interface microleakage of Brånemark, Sulzer Calcitek, 3i, ITI, and Steri-Oss implants was determined spectrophotometrically. Microleakage through the A-I interface occurred in all systems, with variability between systems, samples, and closing torques.

Esthetic maxillary arch vertical location for the osseointegrated cylinder implant.

The single tooth edentulous space can be treated with an osseointegrated implant if presurgical prosthetic planning is specific and accurate. To establish accurate placement of the implant, the position of the mandibular incisor must be studied in relation to the exit point of the implant in the maxillary arch. A sufficient space for placing the implant abutment components, as well as for the crown, must be provided.

Alogliptin Enhances Implant Osseointegration in Diabetes Through an Osteogenic-Angiogenic Immunomodulatory Procedure.

People with diabetes often have a high rate of oral implant failure and unstable long-term treatment effects. It is urgent to find the potential mechanisms and effective cure methods to address the increasing demand for dental restoration in recent years. This paper aims to find an influential factor, and a probable treatment resulting from it, to improve poor osseointegration and achieve favorable bone regeneration. To find out the influential factor of poor diabetic osseointegration, we compared marginal bone loss among patients taking different hypoglycemic drugs. To verify our pre-clinical

Multifunctional metal-phenolic network coatings drive immunocompetent osseointegration via marrow microenvironment remodeling.

Surface modification is crucial for improving bone-implant integration, but current coating technologies lack simplicity, efficiency, and multifunctionality needed for clinical use. Metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) are emerging as a promising biomaterial interface that addresses osseointegration challenges through precise physicochemical design. Our study introduces a gallic acid-arginine@zinc (GA-Arg@Zn) MPN coating that promotes favorable host responses in the following ways: (1) Immunomodulation: Shifting macrophages towards CD206+ anti-inflammatory phenotypes while reducing TNF-α, IL-1β, and

Real-time locomotion mode detection in individuals with transfemoral amputation and osseointegration.

BACKGROUND: Despite notable advancements in prosthetic leg technology, commercially available devices with embedded algorithms utilizing bioelectric signals for prosthetic leg control are lacking. This untapped potential could enhance current prosthetic leg capabilities, enabling more natural movements. However, individuals with short residual limbs have limited available muscle and it has not been investigated if different locomotion modes can be predicted in real-time in this population. Here, we explored the feasibility of using electromyographic signals in individuals with short residual l

Enhancing Osseointegration of Zirconia Implants Using Calcium Phosphate Coatings: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP), a variant of zirconia (ZrO2), has attracted interest as a substitute for titanium in dental and orthopedic implants, valued for its biocompatibility and aesthetics that resemble natural teeth. However, its bioinert surface limits osseointegration, making surface modifications such as calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings highly relevant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The review process adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. Electronic searches of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library (July 2025) identified studies eva

Osseointegration and Bone Resorption of Scapula Tip Free Flaps in Mandibular Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: Bone resorption of more conventional vascularized bone grafts have been well described showing minimal resorption over time. Few studies have evaluated osseous union and bone resorption in scapula tip free flaps (STFF) in the reconstruction of mandibulectomy defects. We aimed to describe our series on STFF with respect to osseous union and bone resorption over time. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients receiving STFF from January 2014-January 2017 (n = 25). A neuroradiologist analyzed follow-up CT scans to assess (1) STFF complete, partial, or no osseous union with nati

Biomimetic Mineralized Fiber Bundle-Inspired Scaffolding Surface on Polyetheretherketone Implants Promotes Osseointegration.

The stress shielding effect caused by traditional metal implants is circumvented by using polyetheretherketone (PEEK), due to its excellent mechanical properties; however, the biologically inert nature of PEEK limits its application. Endowing PEEK with biological activity to promote osseointegration would increase its applicability for bone replacement implants. A biomimetic study is performed, inspired by mineralized collagen fiber bundles that contact bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) on the native trabecular bone surface. The PEEK surface (P) is first sulfonated with sulfuric acid

A dual-functional PEEK implant coating for anti-bacterial and accelerated osseointegration.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been widely applied in biomedical engineering. However, the unsatisfactory bioactivity essentially limits the clinical application of PEEK. In this study, a simply immersing method was proposed to fabricate a dual-functional PEEK with antibacterial properties and enhanced bone integration. Firstly, the surface of PEEK was modified with a polydopamine (PDA) coating by incubating at dopamine solution. Afterward, the PEEK-PDA was modified with manganese (Mn) and silver (Ag) ions by the soaking method to fabricate the PEEK-PDA-Mn/Ag. The physicochemical capabilities

A novel biomimetic trabecular bone metal plate for bone repair and osseointegration.

Fracture is one of the most common traumatic diseases in clinical practice, and metal plates have always been the first choice for fracture treatment because of their high strength. However, the bone plates have high elastic modulus and do not match the biomechanics of human bone, which adversely affects callus formation and fracture healing. Moreover, the complex microenvironment in the human body can induce corrosion of metallic materials and release toxic ions, which reduces the biocompatibility of the bone plate, and may necessitate surgical removal of the implant. In this study, tantalum

Osseointegration for Lower-Extremity Amputees: Operative Considerations from the Plastic Surgeon's Perspective.

➢: Osseointegration for lower-extremity amputees, while increasing in frequency, remains in its relative infancy compared with traditional socket-based prostheses. ➢: Ideal candidates for osseointegration have documented failure of a traditional prosthesis and should be skeletally mature, have adequate bone stock, demonstrate an ability to adhere to a longitudinal rehabilitation protocol, and be in an otherwise good state of health. ➢: Lowering the reoperation rate for soft-tissue complications depends heavily on surgical technique and on the implant device itself; the current gold standard

Promoting Effects of Titanium Implants Coated with Dipterocarpus tuberculatus Extract on Osseointegration.

Titanium (Ti) is the most commonly used biomaterial for dental implants. When inserting Ti implants into jawbones, the main issue is the lack of strong bonding between the Ti implant and the host bone (osseointegration). Inspired by the outstanding adhesion performance of natural phenolic compounds on metal substrates and promoting effect for cell adhesion, we coated a natural plant extract, Dipterocarpus tuberculatus (MED), on Ti implants. We tested three groups of Ti plates and screw-shaped fixtures: nontreated Ti as commercially produced, ozone-treated Ti as commonly used surface modificati

Dental Implants Loaded With Bioactive Agents Promote Osseointegration in Osteoporosis: A Review.

Implant-supported dentures are widely used in patients with defect or loss of dentition because these have higher chewing efficiency and do not damage the adjacent teeth compared with fixed or removable denture. An implant-supported denture carries the risk of failure in some systemic diseases, including osteoporosis, because of a non-ideal local microenvironment. Clinically common physical and chemical modifications are used to change the roughness of the implant surface to promote osseointegration, but they have limitations in promoting osteoinduction and inhibiting bone resorption. Recently

Surface modification for osseointegration of Ti6Al4V ELI using powder mixed sinking EDM.

Biomedical implant rejection due to micromotion and inflammation around an implant leads to osteolysis and eventually has an implant failure because of poor osseointegration. To enhance osseointegration, the implant surface modification both at the nano and micro-scale levels is preferred to result in an enhanced interface between the body tissue and implant. The present study focuses on the modification of the surface of Titanium (α+β) ELI medical grade alloy using powder-mixed electric discharge machining (PMEDM). Pulse current, on/off time, and various silicon carbide (SiC) powder concentra

Bioactive Coating on Ti Alloy with High Osseointegration and Antibacterial Ag Nanoparticles.

Titanium alloys have advanced mechanical properties jointly with high biocompatibility that make them eminently suitable for biomedical applications such as dental and orthopedic implants. Improvement in their osseointegration with human bone can be achieved by the development of hydroxyapatite (HAp) on a Ti alloy surface using different methods of deposition. However, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment has been found to be one of the most promising techniques, due to the formation of high bonding between the bone and the Ti surface. Along with this high bonding, an antibacterial ab

Improved osseointegration properties of hierarchical microtopographic/nanotopographic coatings fabricated on titanium implants.

BACKGROUND: Titanium (Ti) implants are extensively used in reconstructive surgery and orthopedics. However, the intrinsic inertness of untreated Ti implants usually results in insufficient osseointegration. In order to improve the osteoconductivity properties of the implants, they are coated with hierarchical microtopographic/nanotopographic coatings employing the method of molecular layering of atomic layer deposition (ML-ALD). RESULTS: The analysis of the fabricated nanostructured relief employing scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and electron spectroscopy for chemical
