PAC-Net: A physics-guided multimodal hybrid network for antibody-antigen interaction prediction.

The precise prediction of Antibody-Antigen Interaction (AAI) is a pivotal task for accelerating antibody drug discovery and virtual screening. To address the challenges of suboptimal multimodal fusion and the paucity of physical interpretability in existing approaches, this paper proposes PAC-Net, a physical prior-guided end-to-end deep learning framework. First, the model incorporates a Gated Multimodal Fusion mechanism that effectively integrates sequence semantics with implicit structural context from a pretrained protein language model via dynamic weight allocation, thereby achieving adapt

Vector Physics Applied: A Strategic Approach to Optimized Retraction in Robotic Liver Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Robotic liver resection continues to expand; yet surgeons frequently face a fundamental limitation: there are not enough available "hands" to provide effective retraction.1 Although traction and counter-traction are fundamental principles of surgery, robotic platforms constrain how these forces can be applied, often resulting in limited exposure during parenchymal transection.2-5 To address this limitation, we describe a vector-based approach that integrates multiple sources of traction-including ligament-based traction, gallbladder traction, suture-based traction, and retraction u

A Multi-physics model of flow from coronary angiography: Insights to microvascular function.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction (CMD) is characterized by impaired vasodilation and can lead to insufficient blood flow to the myocardium during stress or exertion, affecting millions of people globally. Although invasive wire-based diagnostics such as the index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR) and coronary flow reserve (CFR) provide valuable insights, their adoption in clinical settings remains limited due to procedural complexity and inconsistency. Coronary angiography, one of the most commonly used imaging modalities, offers valuable flow information that as

Physics-Informed Emulation of Systemic Circulation for Fast Parameter Estimation and Uncertainty Quantification.

There are many computational models set up to predict blood flow and pressure in vascular networks. Methods for a single forward solution of such models are well established but become problematic in clinical applications, where model calibration and patient-specific parameter estimation call for repeated forward simulations of the model requiring substantial computational costs. A potential workaround is emulation, which approximates the original mathematical model by a statistical or machine learning surrogate model. Our methodological framework is based on physics-informed neural networks,

Particle Transformer: A Physics-Informed Transformer for Real-Time Fluid-Structure Interaction Simulation.

Recently, the use of data-driven approaches to accelerate physical simulation has emerged as a prominent research frontier. However, existing methodologies often grapple with limitations such as constrained generalization capabilities, a lack of physical consistency, and performance that falls significantly short of real-time requirements. In this paper, we propose the Particle Transformer, a Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) designed to substitute the core computational steps of the Material Point Method (MPM), aiming to enhance efficiency while maintaining physical fidelity. Our propose

Excitonic physics and emergent phenomena in layered transition metal dichalcogenides: progress and prospects.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a fascinating class of layered materials, distinguished by weak interlayer van der Waals forces. Their atomically thin structure and ability to form various layered assemblies provide exceptional electronic and optical properties, positioning TMDs at the forefront of condensed matter research and next-generation technologies. The presence of strong quantum confinement and reduced dielectric screening gives rise to tightly bound excitonic quasiparticles with large binding energies, enabling their existence even at room temperature. The collective inte

SimTac: A Physics-Based Simulator for Vision-Based Tactile Sensing with Biomorphic Structures.

INTRODUCTION: Otitis externa is thought to affect 10% of people at some stage, and can present in acute, chronic, or necrotising forms. Otitis externa may be associated with eczema of the ear canal, and is more common in swimmers, humid environments, people with absence of ear wax or with narrow ear canals, hearing-aid users, and after mechanical trauma. METHODS AND OUTCOMES: We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following clinical questions: What are the effects of empirical and prophylactic treatments for otitis externa? We searched: Medline, Embase, The Cochrane Library,

Computer-based Simulation of Facial Flap and Cleft Lip Reconstruction Using Multiresolution Physics.

Computer-based simulation of complex local flap reconstructions of the face requires very high-density finite elements to render accurately due to the intricate incision designs frequently used. This is particularly true in detailed cleft lip/nose repairs. If the entire anatomic model is embedded in a high-resolution solid lattice, the element count becomes so high that simulator performance is very slow, even on a high-performance workstation. This article introduces a simulator in which the model is initially presented at a low, but acceptable physical resolution. As the surgeon operates on

The search for superionic solid-state electrolytes using a physics-informed generative model.

The discovery of superionic solid-state electrolytes for cation batteries is currently limited by the range of materials available in online materials databases. Generative artificial intelligence approaches have recently been applied to overcome this limitation and explore unknown stoichiometries and structures, but efficiently generating candidates that satisfy strict stability criteria remains challenging. Here we introduce a physics-informed hierarchical generative framework that leverages symmetry-aware crystallographic principles to systematically explore molecular configurations, lattic

Integrated physics-based modeling and microfluidics for quantifying multiphase carbonate dissolution in rocks.

Acid dissolution of carbonate formations is critical to the energy transition and relevant to many engineering applications. The dynamics of the dissolution reaction are complex, strongly depend both on the flow properties and sample mineralogy and are further complicated by the production of carbon dioxide gas bubbles from the reactive surface, which renders the system multiphase. Quantifying the impact of multiphase flow conditions on effective reaction rates of carbonate dissolution has challenged experimental methods focused on core-based characterization techniques. In this work, we use m

Investigation of the CO2 adsorption isotherms on activated carbon by statistical physics treatment.

The aim of this paper was to study CO2 adsorption on the activated carbon (AC) prepared from olive waste. The AC was characterized via X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and N2 adsorption-desorption. The adsorption isotherms were measured at various temperatures, namely, 298 K, 308 K, and 318 K. Based on the experimental result, a new model was generated and evaluated by means of a multilayer model with saturation. The physicochemical properties that characterize the CO2 adsorption mechanism have been established using a physical statistical approach. The parameters which ch

Compass-model physics on the hyperhoneycomb lattice in the extreme spin-orbit regime.

The physics of spin-orbit entangled magnetic moments of 4d and 5d transition metal ions on a honeycomb lattice has been much explored in the search for unconventional magnetic orders or quantum spin liquids expected for compass spin models, where different bonds in the lattice favour different orientations for the magnetic moments. Realising such physics with rare-earth ions is a promising route to achieve exotic ground states in the extreme spin-orbit limit; however, this regime has remained experimentally largely unexplored due to major challenges in materials synthesis. Here we report the s

Mitochondria at the Nanoscale: Physics Meets Biology-What Does It Mean for Medicine?

Mitochondria are commonly perceived as "cellular power plants". Intriguingly, power conversion is not their only function. In the first part of this paper, we review the role of mitochondria in the evolution of eukaryotic organisms and in the regulation of the human body, specifically focusing on cancer and autism in relation to mitochondrial dysfunction. In the second part, we overview our previous works, revealing the physical principles of operation for proton-pumping complexes in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Our proposed simple models reveal the physical mechanisms of energy exchange.

Do striking biases in mass inference reflect a flawed mental model of physics?

To engage with the physical world, we rely on our intuitive sense of how objects will behave when we act on them or they interact with each other. Objects' latent properties such as mass and hardness determine how their physical interactions will unfold, and people have a keen ability to infer these latent properties by observing physical events. For example, we can precisely discriminate the relative masses of two objects when we see them collide. However, such inferences are sometimes subject to marked biases. When inferring mass from an observed collision, people consistently overestimate t

Oxide Spintronics as a Knot of Physics and Chemistry: Recent Progress and Opportunities.

Transition-metal oxides (TMOs) constitute a key material family in spintronics because of mutually coupled degrees of freedom and tunable magneto-ionic properties. In this Perspective, we consider oxide spintronics as a knot of physics and chemistry and mainly discuss two current hot topics: spin-charge interconversion and magneto-ionics. First, spin-charge interconversion is focused on oxide films and heterostructures including 4d/5d heavy metal oxides (e.g., SrIrO3) and two-dimensional electron gases. Based on spin-charge interconversion, charge currents can be transformed to spin currents a

PhysiCell: An open source physics-based cell simulator for 3-D multicellular systems.

Many multicellular systems problems can only be understood by studying how cells move, grow, divide, interact, and die. Tissue-scale dynamics emerge from systems of many interacting cells as they respond to and influence their microenvironment. The ideal "virtual laboratory" for such multicellular systems simulates both the biochemical microenvironment (the "stage") and many mechanically and biochemically interacting cells (the "players" upon the stage). PhysiCell-physics-based multicellular simulator-is an open source agent-based simulator that provides both the stage and the players for stud

Macromolecular crowding: chemistry and physics meet biology (Ascona, Switzerland, 10-14 June 2012).

More than 60 years of biochemical and biophysical studies have accustomed us to think of proteins as highly purified entities that act in isolation, more or less freely diffusing until they find their cognate partner to bind to. While in vitro experiments that reproduce these conditions largely remain the only way to investigate the intrinsic properties of molecules, this approach ignores an important factor: in their natural milieu , proteins are surrounded by several other molecules of different chemical nature, and this crowded environment can considerably modify their behaviour. About 40%
