Pneumorrachis and pneumocephalus associated with neck injury after stabbing.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-related pneumocephalus and subcutaneous emphysema are relatively common, but pneumocephalus and pneumorrachis that occur without surgery are very rare. We present a case of pneumorrachis and pnemocephalus developing in the literature for the first time after stabbing from the anterior cervical region and providing improvement with conservative treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old male patient was brought to the emergency department after stabbed in the neck. Anteromedial injury of the sternocloid muscle was followed by two lacerations with active bleeding from the sa

Occult Orbital Injury with Dagger Fragment with Resulting Pneumocephalus.

Penetrating injuries of the cranium are relatively uncommon, only 0.4% of all head injuries. In patients with disturbed conscious level, an extensive examination should be performed in the emergency unit to rule out transorbital penetrating brain injury. A 25-year-old male was attacked with a dagger. He presented with ethylic intoxication and the physical examination demonstrated a small skin injury on the lateral canthus of the left eye with a large periocular hematoma which prevented eyelid opening. Cranial CT scan showed a metallic intraorbital foreign body consisting of a fragment of a dag

Symptomatic pneumocephalus: A rare complication of discal herniation's surgery.

Context: We report the case of a 40-year-old woman with no pathological history, operated from an L4-L5 disc herniation by a left unilateral approach. The dura mater enveloping the left L5 root was accidentally injured at its lateral face causing a breach with CSF leakage. This breach could not be sutured. A few hours after waking, the patient presented an agitation followed by three generalized tonico-clonic seizures. Cerebral imaging revealed pneumocephalus. The patient was hospitalized in an intensive care unit. The symptoms gradually faded and the patient was discharged 3 days after surger

Delayed Intraventricular Pneumocephalus Following Shunting for Normal-Pressure Hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Pneumocephalus is usually seen in trauma or cranial surgery. It is rarely reported as a delayed complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement for hydrocephalus secondary to trauma, tumor, or aqueduct stenosis. We describe a case of intraventricular pneumocephalus manifesting 10 months after placement of a shunt for normal-pressure hydrocephalus. CASE DESCRIPTION: A pressure-regulated ventriculoperitoneal shunt was implanted in an 81-year-old patient after diagnosis of normal-pressure hydrocephalus. He showed postoperative clinical improvement. Routine computed tomography pe

E-cigarette Blast Injury: Complex Facial Fractures and Pneumocephalus.

Electronic cigarettes (also known as e-cigarettes or e-cigs) are becoming a popular method of recreational nicotine use over recent years. The growth of new brands and devices has been outpacing the FDA's ability to regulate them. As a result, some of these devices fail without warning, most likely from malfunction of the lithium-ion batteries that are in close proximity to volatile compounds within the device. Failures have occurred during both use and storage of the devices or their components. The subsequent injuries from several of these events, including full thickness burns requiring gra

Pneumocephalus Following Thoracic Surgery with Posterior Chest Wall Resection.

Pneumocephalus can be seen after head injury with fracture of the skull-base or in cerebral neoplasm, infection, or after intracranial or spinal surgery. We report on a 69-year-old male patient with pneumocephalus after right-sided lobectomy and en bloc resection of the chest wall for non-small-cell lung cancer. Postoperatively, the patient showed a reduced vigilance level with no response to pain stimuli and anisocoria. The CCT scan revealed an extensive pneumocephalus; following which, the patient underwent neurosurgery with laminectomy and ligature of the transected nerve roots. After opera

A rare case of tension pneumocephalus after head trauma.

OBJECTIVES: We present a rare case of tension pneumocephalus (TP) after head trauma not involving mask ventilation but based on pathological respiration pattern, kussmaul breathing. TP is rare condition and exceptionally rare when positive airway pressure has not been applied. In this particular case, the vacuum and one-valve intracranial effects causing pneumocephalon were instead accentuated by a pathological pattern of respiration due to severe ketoacidosis - a condition not previously reported in the literature. METHODS: This is a case report showing a rare cause of pneumocephalon caused

A rare complication of septoplasty: tension pneumocephalus without rhinorrhea.

This paper describes a tension pneumocephalus without cerebrospinal fluid leak, a rare complication of septoplasty. We present a case of tension pneumocephalus without cerebrospinal fluid leak 1 month after a septoplasty operation. Although endoscopic sinus surgery can be utilized for repair of the defect, intracranially displaced ethmoid bone fragment makes an open approach more feasible. His postoperative course was uneventful and postoperative CT scan revealed no signs of pneumocephalus. Absence of cerebrospinal fluid leak made this case unique in presentation and caused a delay in diagnosi

Spontaneous pneumocephalus after commercial air travel complicated by meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Pneumocephalus usually results from trauma, infection, neoplasm, or iatrogenic causes. Barotrauma-induced spontaneous pneumocephalus is extremely rare, usually seen in divers or occassionally with air travel. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 61-yr-old female presenting with confusion, fever, and respiratory failure one day after developing sudden nausea, vomiting, and headache during descent on a commercial airliner. Pneumocephalus and meningitis were present on admission. Sinus computed tomography (CT) showed pansinusitis and a tiny bone defect in the posterior wall of the righ

Endoscopic repair of skull base defects presenting with pneumocephalus.

OBJECTIVE: Persistent pneumocephalus often indicates the presence of a skull base (SB) defect associated with one of the paranasal sinuses. Such defects require treatment to avoid sequelae. The study objective was to evaluate success in endoscopic closure of SB defects associated with pneumocephalus. DESIGN: Retrospective medical record review. SETTING: Tertiary care academic rhinology practice. METHODS: A 5-year retrospective review of patients presenting with pneumocephalus. Presenting symptoms, etiology of SB defects, radiologic findings, operative techniques, and follow-up were evaluate

Pneumocephalus secondary to colonic perforation by ventriculoperitoneal shunt catheter.

We present a case of colonic perforation as a complication arising from ventriculoperitoneal shunt catheter. A 58-year-old woman with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt catheter inserted for obstructive hydrocephalus was admitted to hospital with signs and symptoms of meningitis. CT showed an air-fluid level within both lateral ventricles, raising the possibility of colonic perforation since no other aetiology for the pneumocephalus could be found. The CT demonstration of the colonic perforation played a crucial role in patient management.

Venous air embolism after craniotomy closure: tension pneumocephalus implicated.

The authors present a case of venous air embolism occurring immediately upon skin closure after craniotomy in the prone position. This 5-year-old patient had a third ventricle tumor resected with bipolar cautery via a frontal trans-collosal approach into the lateral ventricle and through the foramen of Monroe. Doppler monitoring was utilized during the case since the patient's head was extended upwards in 10 degrees reverse Trendelenburg position. No air was detected during the operation. The ventricles were filled with saline presumably displacing air, prior to dural closure. However, with an

Traumatic chiasmal syndrome associated with pneumocephalus and sellar fracture.

A 50-year-old man sustained severe head injury, including a brief loss of consciousness, in an automobile accident. Skull X-ray films disclosed a fracture of the right superior orbit. Computed tomography demonstrated pneumocephalus and extension of the fracture into the sella turcica. Perimetric testing disclosed a bitemporal hemianopia along the vertical meridian. Visual acuity was 6/6 (20/20) in both eyes. Right macular sparing and left macular splitting were demonstrated by Amsler grid analysis as well as by the patient's description of target grids projected onto his maculas. Diplopia was

Hospital-Acquired Citrobacter Meningitis Complicated by Pneumocephalus in a Neonate.

Background: Lenalidomide (LEN), an immunomodulatory drug (IMiD), is currently used for treatment of multiple myeloma (MM). LEN potentiates T cell and natural killer cell functions. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the immunomodulatory effects of LEN remain unclear. We focused on the effects of LEN on human plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs), which are the major source of interferon (IFN)-α in the blood and play a central role in innate immune responses. Results: We found that bortezomib, a proteasome inhibitor used to treat MM, killed pDCs but that 0.1-3 μM LEN (cover
