A lung nematode in Canadian Arctic muskoxen. Standard radiographic and computed tomographic imaging.

Medical imaging was used before death to follow the development of U. pallikuukensis infection in muskoxen and postmortem to investigate the distribution and characteristics of parasite-associated pulmonary cysts. In two experimentally infected animals, lesions were not visible radiographically until days 178 and 191 PI, 3 months after the parasites became patent. Serial radiographs taken throughout the period of patency of one animal showed an initial increase in lesion size by day 415 PI, but by day 789 PI, lesions had stabilized or decreased in size. Although all lesions detected postmortem

Thalamic pathology in schizophrenia.

The thalamus plays a critical role in the coordination of information as it passes from region to region within the brain. A disruption of that information flow may give rise to some of the cardinal symptoms of schizophrenia. In support of this hypothesis, schizophrenia-like syndromes emerge when illnesses, such as stroke, selectively damage the thalamus while sparing the rest of the brain. Evidence from many sources has implicated thalamic dysfunction in schizophrenia. In postmortem studies, several subregions of the thalamus, including the mediodorsal nucleus and the pulvinar, have been show

The emerging neuropathology of essential tremor.

Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most prevalent neurological disorders. At the same time, it is among the most poorly-understood of these disorders. The underlying anatomical pathology of ET has been elusive until recently. Postmortem studies have begun to display some of the underlying brain changes in patients with this disease. These types of investigations are likely to lead the way to additional insights into the pathophysiology of ET and guide the development of therapies for this common movement disorder.

Two medicolegal autopsy cases of multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor revealed by postmortem MRI.

The multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor (MVNT) is a recently recognized brain lesion. MVNT has a characteristic appearance in MRI images and is potentially epileptogenic. To the best of our knowledge, no report has yet described this pathological entity in the forensic medicine literature. We present two medicolegal autopsy cases where postmortem MRI (PMMR) was useful to detect this lesion. Case 1: a man in his 30s, with about a 7-year history of intractable epilepsy and known MVNT died suddenly. Although MVNT was not detected in the initial morphological evaluation during autopsy, PMM

Dual-resolution megahertz optical coherence tomography prototype rectoscope for enhanced visualization of colorectal microstructures.

SIGNIFICANCE: Endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a valuable tool for rectal imaging, enabling noninvasive visualization of transmural structures with near-histological resolution, critical for accurate tumor staging and diagnostic/therapeutic monitoring. However, anatomical variability of the rectum and the resulting changes in tissue-to-probe distance challenge optimal circumferential imaging. AIM: We aim to develop a dual-mode endoscopic OCT system, enabling real-time switching between high-detail and extended-range imaging for improved assessment of rectal wall morphology und

Exploring radiomic features of lateral cerebral ventricles in postmortem CT for postmortem interval estimation.

The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of radiomic features extracted from postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) scans of the lateral cerebral ventricles (LCVs) to provide information on the time since death, or postmortem interval (PMI), a critical aspect of forensic medicine. Periodic PMCT scans, referred to as "sequential scans", were obtained from twelve corpses with known times of death, ranging from 5.5 to 273 h postmortem. Radiomics features were then extracted from the LCVs, and a mixed-effect model, specifically designed for sequential data, was employed to assess the a

Multiphase Postmortem Computed Tomography Angiography in Pediatrics: A Case Report.

Postmortem imaging techniques, especially postmortem computed tomography, have become integral tools in forensic investigations. Multiphase postmortem computed tomography angiography (MPMCTA) visualizes the vascular system in detail and makes it possible to evaluate the perfusion of even the smallest vessels. Although the technique has been well described for adults, no pediatric cases have been reported and no pediatric protocol has been established for this type of investigation. We present the case a 7-year-old child for which we used a previously described MPMCTA protocol and adapted value

Applying dual energy computed tomography to postmortem coronary computed tomographic angiography.

BACKGROUND: Medical examiners' offices are increasingly utilizing postmortem computed tomography (CT). While dual energy CT (DECT) has been applied in both clinical and postmortem settings, research on the application to postmortem coronary computed tomographic angiography (PMcCTA) is extremely limited. This study aims to evaluate whether DECT performed following PMcCTA using two contrast agents with differing chemical and physical properties allows for agent discrimination and simultaneous characterization of coronary artery patency and myocardial perfusion. METHODS: Phantoms were created us

Dimensions and volume of the carotid body in the adult cat, and their relation to the specific blood flow through the organ. A histological and morphometric study.

In perfusion-fixed preparations of the carotid body, morphological measurements were made on serial histological sections using an interactive image analysis system. The volume of the organ was found to be 0.247 +/- 0.092 mm3. This is considerably smaller than the previous estimates based on the measured postmortem wet weight. This means that the specific blood flow to the carotid body of 2,000 ml/min/100 g using the previously obtained values for the organ's total blood flow and postmortem wet weight may be an underestimate of the true value.

Craniofacial identification by computer-mediated superimposition.

Mass disasters are associated with a large number of fatalities, with victims being visually unidentifiable in most cases. Dental identification, although being an important and valuable identification method, is subject to the availability and quality of antemortem and postmortem dental records. This paper presents a simple-to-use method of human identification using an antemortem photograph showing anterior teeth with superimposition onto a postmortem image using specific features of Adobe Photoshop. We present cases and discuss the benefits and difficulties of this method.

Effects of postmortem interval on myelin integrity in rhesus macaque brain tissue.

When conducting microscopy of human brain sections, the postmortem interval (PMI) introduces myelin-related artifacts that can confound neuropathological interpretation, yet the extent and detectability of these changes remain poorly characterized. This study examined the impact of controlled PMI on myelin integrity in rhesus macaque brain tissue using advanced optical imaging approaches. Brains from five aged rhesus macaques (20.5-28.5 years) were maintained at 4°C and analyzed at 0, 24, and 72 h postmortem. Myelin integrity in white and gray matter was assessed using quantitative birefringen

Comparing Antemortem CT-Angiography Data with Autopsy Findings in Regard to Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: The literature shows that anterior communicating artery (AcoA) aneurysms are the most common intracranial aneurysms. To date, there has only been one postmortem study focused on the correlations between autopsy findings and imaging results in cases of intracranial aneurysms associated with anatomical variants of the circle of Willis (CW). METHODS: We investigated the anatomical variants of the CW associated with the occurrence and rupture of AcoA aneurysms by performing comparative analyses, in the same patients, of postmortem autopsy data with antemortem computed tomography-angio

Bilateral congenital adrenal agenesis: a rare disease entity and not a result of poor autopsy technique.

Congenital adrenal agenesis is an extremely rare condition wherein the adrenal glands fail to develop. The absence of adrenal tissue results in the complete absence of hormones produced in the adrenal cortex (cortisol, aldosterone) and medulla (catecholamines), and is not compatible with postnatal life without artificial hormone replacement therapy. To date, 9 cases of adrenal agenesis have been reported, many of which are associated with additional congenital anomalies. Most cases were not detected on antenatal imaging and were detected incidentally at postmortem examination. We present a cas

Operationalizing postmortem pathology-MRI association studies in Alzheimer's disease and related disorders with MRI-guided histology sampling.

Postmortem neuropathological examination, while the gold standard for diagnosing neurodegenerative diseases, often relies on limited regional sampling that may miss critical areas affected by Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Ultra-high resolution postmortem MRI can help identify regions that fall outside the diagnostic sampling criteria for additional histopathologic evaluation. However, there are no standardized guidelines for integrating histology and MRI in a traditional brain bank. We developed a comprehensive protocol for whole hemisphere postmortem 7T MRI-guided histopathologic

Fixation, not death, reduces sensitivity of DTI in detecting optic nerve damage.

The changes of directional diffusivities derived from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), i.e. decreased axial diffusivity (lambda(||)) and increased radial diffusivity (lambda( perpendicular)), have shown significant correlation with axonal and myelin damage, respectively. However, after formalin fixation, reduced sensitivity of lambda(||) in detecting axonal damage in tissue has raised the concern of applying DTI ex vivo. In order to distinguish whether death or the fixation process diminishes the sensitivity of DTI in detecting lesions, in vivo, pre-fixed postmortem, and fixed postmortem DTI we

Radiomic analysis of postmortem lung changes: a PMCT-based approach for estimating the postmortem interval.

This study presents an investigation of the potential of radiomic features extracted from postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) scans of the lungs to provide valuable insights into the postmortem interval (PMI), a crucial parameter in forensic medicine. Sequential PMCT scans were performed on 17 bodies with known times of death, ranging from 4 to 108 h postmortem. Radiomic features were extracted from the lungs, and a mixed-effects model, tailored for sequential data, was employed to assess the relationship between feature values and the PMI. Four model variants were tested to identify the mos

A novel framework for integrating post-mortem images with 3D body models for automatic injury medical documentation.

Forensic medicine is critical in criminal investigations, providing essential insights into the nature and mechanisms of injuries. Traditional post-mortem examination remains mostly manual, which introduces risks of error and inefficiency, particularly in injury assessment. This study proposes a fully automated system for detecting and mapping injuries (bruises and abrasions) on a 3D human body model to improve forensic documentation. The developed automated system consisted of the following modules: (1) a module for predicting injuries in images, (2) a module for generating a 3D human body ba
