Experiences of child abuse and prolonged grief in adulthood - results from a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, various risk factors for the development of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) have been discussed. While it is well established that child abuse increases the risk of various mental disorders in later life, the relationship between child abuse, including its subtypes, and PGD is barely examined. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of child abuse and distinct abuse patterns on PGD symptoms in a population-based German sample. METHODS: We used self-reported data from 911 individuals (54.3 ± 17.9 years, 59.2% women) who had experienced the loss of

Dreams of the dead among Cambodian refugees: frequency, phenomenology, and relationship to complicated grief and posttraumatic stress disorder.

The authors investigated the importance of dreams of the deceased in the experiencing of prolonged grief (PG) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Cambodian refugees who survived the Pol Pot genocide (1975-1979). Such dreams were frequent in the last month (52% of those surveyed), and most often involved a relative who died in the Pol Pot period. Past month frequency was correlated with PG severity (r = .59) and PTSD severity (r = .52). The dreams were almost always deeply upsetting because the dreams indicated the deceased to be in a difficult spiritual state. Dreams of the deceased

Psychogenic mania and bereavement.

Early notions of mania invoked a combination of psychogenic and organic factors, but psychogenic mania has not endured as a concept. We present a 37-year-old woman with an acute manic episode precipitated by the prolonged death of her husband from cancer. To our knowledge this is the first published account of 'maniacal grief' in the absence of pre-existing affective disorder, and with clear causal relations. Mania was clearly induced by the bereavement and we argue that the loss represented more than a non-specific life event. This case supports a re-examination of mania as potentially a 'rea

Predicting Complicated Grief in Caregivers of End-of-Life Cancer Patients.

ObjectivesPersistent Complex Bereavement Disorder (PCBD) is an independent clinical condition characterized by a severe grief reaction lasting more than twelve months after the loss of a loved one. This study aimed to assess the rate of PCBD among caregivers of end-of-life patients. The secondary aim was to explore the role of several risk factors for PCBD, including psychosocial characteristics of both patients and caregivers, patients' dignity-related distress, attachment style, and perceived social support as well as symptoms of depression, anxiety, and perceived stress of caregivers.Method

Resting-state functional connectivity of the rostral and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex in older bereaved adults.

BACKGROUND: Older adults are at higher risk of losing a loved one, with approximately 10 % developing prolonged grief disorder (PGD) after loss. PGD is characterized by distressing and impairing symptoms, reduced life quality, and increased suicide risk. While attentional processes may contribute to PGD pathophysiology, the rostral (rACC) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) appear to play different yet complementary roles in attention in the bereavement context. However, the respective contributions of the connectivity of these two regions in PGD symptom severity have never been evalua

[Psychotraumatology : Differentiation, extension and public discourse].

The first description of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the 1980s marked the origin of psychotraumatology. Based on the variety of developments in the meantime and being relevant for basic research and clinical application, a differentiation of diagnoses according to the new International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) are presented including PTSD, complex PTSD, prolonged grief disorder and adjustment disorder. In addition, extension towards traumatic and adverse childhood experiences and their significance for lifetime mental and somatic morbidity are described. Concerning these

Uncovering Prolonged Grief Reactions Subsequent to a Reproductive Loss: Implications for the Primary Care Provider.

INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of clinical guidelines for the routine assessment of maladaptive reproductive grief reactions in outpatient primary care and OB-GYN settings in the United States. Because of the disenfranchised nature of perinatal grief reactions, many clinicians may be apt to miss or dismiss a grief reaction that was not identified in the perinatal period. A significant number of those experiencing a reproductive loss exhibit signs of anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder. Reproductive losses are typically screened for and recorded numerically as part of a wom

Bereavement Support Programs in the Intensive Care Unit: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: The death of a loved one in the intensive care unit (ICU) may have a psychological impact on relatives of deceased ICU patients. The first aim of this review is to give an overview of different bereavement support strategies and possible different effects on anxiety, depression, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and complicated grief. Secondly to assess if there is a difference in organization among bereavement support strategies mentioned in literature. METHODS: A multi-database search (Pubmed, Web of Science, PsychInfo, Medline, and Embase) was conducted until February 6, 2

[Toward a revision of ICD: current discussion on stress-related disorders].

Under the ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders, reaction to severe stress and adjustment disorders (F43) is unique in that the disorders are defined by a stressor which caused the disorder, along with the specific psychiatric symptoms. Acute stress reactions (F43.0), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (F43.1), adjustment disorder (F43.2), and other reactions to severe stress are grouped into this category. Major conceptual change in F43 is discussed and will be proposed upon the next revision of the ICD. The proposal will include the removal of acute stress reactions fro

Associations of depressive rumination and positive affect regulation with emotional distress after the death of a loved one.

The death of a loved one may precipitate symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Brooding about the causes and consequences of one's negative affect (NA), also termed depressive rumination, has been linked to distress after loss. The role of dysregulation of positive affect (PA) has received less attention. We examined (1) the factor structure of depressive rumination and PA dysregulation and (2) to what extent these factors were related to PGD, PTSD and depression symptom levels. Self-report data were included from 235 Dutch bereaved p

Exploring the intersections of college student poverty, grief, and racial/ethnic identity: a scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: College students who experience the negative impact of poverty, such as food, financial, and housing insecurity, are at higher risk for poor academic performance. One recent study examined grief in a college student sample and found students with a diverse racial or ethnic background were more likely to experience prolonged grief disorder, however, did not examine poverty in their sample. To date, no known reviews have examined poverty by racial and ethnic identity and the experience of grief due to the death of a family member or friend, and no reviews have examined how these thre

Biopsychosocial impacts of mother loss on daughters in Australia: Cross-sectional study.

We aimed to describe the biopsychosocial impacts of a mother's death at any stage in life on adult daughters in Australia. A total of 2735 mother-bereaved daughters completed an online survey about their experiences of mother loss and its impacts. We assessed several biopsychosocial outcomes, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), prolonged grief disorder (PGD), quality of life (QoL), sleep disturbance, and pain. Using multiple regressions, we examined how mother and daughter's age at the time of death, daughter's levels of maternal and genera

Mass Trauma, Multiple Losses, and the Application of the Two-Track Model of Bereavement in the Context of War: Assessment From a Systemic-Ecological Perspective.

Multiple losses in wartime, both death-related and non-death-related, require multidimensional assessment to encompass both the event and the multiple levels of interpersonal and societal involvements within which individuals are embedded. We present a case study in which the traumatic death of a family member is a central, but not exclusive, element in understanding the bereavement process. The traumatic death originated with the events of October 7, 2023 and the ensuing war which were part of an overwhelming surge of traumatic losses in Israel. The bereaved's response met the criteria for Po

Specialized Versus Standard Care After Pregnancy and Neonatal Loss: A Cohort Study.

Pregnancy loss is a traumatic experience, and the quality of care can vary significantly across healthcare settings. However, evidence on the impact of different types of care on psychological outcomes is limited. This study examined the relationship between specialized care for parents experiencing pregnancy or neonatal loss and the level of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms, as well as the role of midwifery support, one month post-loss. Using longitudinal data from 732 Danish parents who experienced a loss between 2016 and 2021, we found that 2

The Psychology of Pandemics.

This article reviews the current state of knowledge and promising new directions concerning the psychology of pandemics. Pandemics are disease outbreaks that spread globally. Historically, psychological factors have been neglected by researchers and health authorities despite evidence that pandemics are, to a large extent, psychological phenomena whereby beliefs and behaviors influence the spreading versus containment of infection. Psychological factors are important in determining (a) adherence to pandemic mitigation methods (e.g., adherence to social distancing), (b) pandemic-related social

Concurrent and prospective associations of intolerance of uncertainty with symptoms of prolonged grief, posttraumatic stress, and depression after bereavement.

This study examined associations of Prospective IU and Inhibitory IU with symptom-levels of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), Posttraumatic Stress-Disorder (PTSD), and depression in a sample of bereaved individuals. Specifically, 265 bereaved individuals completed measures of IU, PGD, PTSD, and depression in the first year after the death of a loved one; 134 participants again completed symptom-measures six months later. Cross-sectional analyses showed that Inhibitory IU (but not Prospective IU) was positively associated with symptom-levels of PTSD and depression (but not PGD), even when control

Support needs, support use and perceived helpfulness of support in a cohort of people bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic: insights from a longitudinal survey.

BACKGROUND: The negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on grief outcomes are well documented. However, less is known about the evolving support needs of people bereaved during this time, what support they used and, crucially, how this support helped (or hindered) their coping, with applicability to contemporary bereavement support contexts. METHODS: A longitudinal survey of people bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK, over four time points: baseline (T1; n = 711), c. 8 (T2; n = 384), 13 (T3; n = 295), and 25 (T4; n = 185) months post-bereavement. Death Anxiety and Trauma in Forcibly Displaced Children in the Gaza Strip: A Critical Review of Emerging Research, 2024-2025.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review synthesizes recent empirical and theoretical studies from 2024 to 2025 that examine the psychological effects of war, displacement, and siege on Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip. It focuses on the interconnected issues of death anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), grief, and resilience, aiming to frame mental health outcomes within structural and political contexts rather than within individual pathology. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies indicate that between 70 and 90% of children in the Gaza Strip meet criteria for PTSD or exhibit significant symptoms
