An 88.8-kb Novel Deletion of 19q13.2 Encompassing the ATP1A3 Gene Detected by Array CGH in a Patient with Delayed Psychomotor Development, Generalized Hypotonia and Macrocephaly.

Many neurodevelopmental disorders are caused by the presence of CNVs. Chromosome microarray technology is widely used to accurately detect CNVs. We report the case of a male, aged 3 years, presenting with delayed psychomotor development, generalized hypotonia, encephalopathy, delayed myelination in the central nervous system, and poor motor coordination. The array CGH revealed an interstitial deletion of chromosome 19q13.2 with a size of 88.8 kb involving 3 OMIM genes: RABAC1, ARHGEF1, and ATP1A3. Heterozygous mutations in the ATP1A3 gene are associated with delayed psychomotor development, al

Successful guselkumab treatment in a psoriatic patient affected with Cornelia de Lange syndrome, and prosecution during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Psychomotor delay and intellectual disability are potential limitations in psoriasis management, due to low compliance, and strict dependence from caregivers intervention. We report our successful experience with a 58-year-old woman, who was genetically affected by Cornelia De Lange syndrome, which causes intellectual disability and psychomotor disorders. The patient had been already treated with topical and traditional therapies, without any clinical benefits. Eventually, she adhered to guselkumab treatment. The compliance was excellent, significant improvements were observed after only 3 mon

Late-onset mental deterioration and fluctuating dystonia in a female patient with a truncating MECP2 mutation.

A 26-year-old woman with psychomotor developmental delay since late infancy showed rapid deterioration of her psychomotor abilities at the 11 years of age. She had gained the ability to verbally express herself and perform motor activities such as running and dancing in early childhood, but she lost the ability to verbally communicate and was unable to walk independently after this period. She also presented with dystonia in the right extremities, which markedly fluctuated with a periodicity of hours to months. Sleep disturbance and epileptic seizures also emerged during adolescence. Cerebral neoplasm in L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria: two different presentations.

BACKGROUND: L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (L2HGA) is a rare neurometabolic disorder characterized by a slowly progressive clinical course, psychomotor and mental retardation, macrocephaly, dysarthria, seizures, and cerebellar and extrapyramidal findings. The diagnosis depends on the presentation of increased levels of L-2-hydroxyglutaric acid in the urine, plasma, and cerebrospinal fluids. Patients with L2HGA have an increased risk for the development of cerebral neoplasms which, though rarely, can be the initial presentation of the disease. Moreover, patients with L2HGA have an increased risk

Catatonia and the immune system: a review.

Catatonia is a psychomotor disorder featuring stupor, posturing, and echophenomena. This Series paper examines the evidence for immune dysregulation in catatonia. Activation of the innate immune system is associated with mutism, withdrawal, and psychomotor retardation, which constitute the neurovegetative features of catatonia. Evidence is sparse and conflicting for acute-phase activation in catatonia, and whether this feature is secondary to immobility is unclear. Various viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections have been associated with catatonia, but it is primarily linked to CNS infectio

Misdiagnosis of Primary Eating Disorder in an Individual With Major Depressive Disorder and Comorbid Catatonic Syndrome.

Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome affecting movement, emotion, speech, and behavior, which commonly occurs secondary to medical or psychiatric disorders and with comorbid illnesses. We report the case of an 18-year-old male with a history of depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, polysubstance use, and previous suicide attempts who presented to the hospital from a residential eating disorders treatment facility, due to psychomotor slowing. The patient scored 3 or lower on the Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale (BFCRS), but he showed marked improvement following

Electronic monitoring of psychomotor activity as a supplementary objective measure of depression severity.

BACKGROUND: Rating scales used to assess the severity of depression e.g. the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale 17-item (HDRS-17) partly rely on the patient's subjective experience and reporting. Such subjective measures tend to have low reliability and adding objective measures to complement the assessment of depression severity would be a major step forward. AIMS: To investigate correlations between electronic monitoring of psychomotor activity and severity of depression according to HDRS-17. METHODS: A total of 36 patients with unipolar disorder (n = 18) or bipolar disorder (n = 18) and 31

The close link between suicide attempts and mixed (bipolar) depression: implications for suicide prevention.

BACKGROUND: Previous reports have shown a significant relationship between suicide ideation and mixed depression. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence and clinical characteristics of mixed depression among non-violent suicide attempters. METHODS: Using a structured interview (modified Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview) and assessing all the symptoms of 16 psychiatric diagnoses, the authors examined 100 consecutive nonviolent suicide attempters (aged 18-65) within 24 h after their attempts. Mixed depression was defined as a major depressive episode (MDE)/dysthymic di

Psychogenic Hyperphagia: Excessive Eating as Stereotypy in a Patient with Catatonia.

Catatonia is a complex syndrome with unique cognitive, psychomotor, and mood features. Mannerisms and stereotypies are catatonic signs that have been extensively observed and described in the literature, mostly in the context of movements or motor acts. Stereotypies are commonly described as repetitive psychomotor or verbal acts with the abnormality not inherent in the act but in its frequency. Mannerisms, like stereotypies, are repetitive psychomotor or verbal acts, but they are fundamentally odd in nature. Recently, several reports have described these phenomena in the context of complex beh

Memory performance in panic disorder patients after chronic use of clomipramine.

This study investigated the chronic use (6.3 +/- 0.5 years; mean +/- SEM) of therapeutic doses of clomipramine (57.0 +/- 8.0 mg/day) by outpatients with panic disorder/agoraphobia who were currently in remission to assess impairment of memory and psychomotor functions. In addition, the association between test performance and serum levels of clomipramine (CMI) and its active metabolite desmethylclomipramine (DCMI) was also assessed. Patients and healthy volunteers matched for sex, age and educational level were submitted to rating scales and to memory and psychomotor tests. There was no signif

Gitelman syndrome as a cause of psychomotor retardation in a toddler.

INTRODUCTION: Gitelman syndrome (GS) is a very rare autosomal recessive tubulopathy due to loss-of-function or mutation in solute carrier family12, member 3 gene (SLC12A3 gene) encoding thiazide-sensitive NaCl co-transporter in the distal convoluted tubule, leading to hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, hypomagnesemia, hypocalciuria and low-to-normal blood pressure. Clinical signs are mostly secondary to chronic hypokalemia and include dizziness, fatigue, constipation and weakness. Patients can also present with muscle cramps, tetany, fatigue and convulsions due to severe metabolic alkalosis or

[ENT manifestations of congenital cytomegalovirus infection].

Cytomegalovirus is the most common cause of congenital infection worldwide. 90 % of children infected in utero are born without symptoms, but 15 % of them will develop disorders within the first five years of life. The most common disorders affect the inner ear, resulting in sensorineural hearing loss and/or vestibular dysfunction (VD). VD is often unrecognized and confused with conditions -affecting the central nervous system. It can cause delays in psychomotor development and predispose to overall developmental delay. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent or limit these sequ

The motor planning abilities of phonologically disordered children.

The motor planning abilities of three subgroups of speech-disordered children were compared to normally speaking age- and comprehension-matched controls. There were 10 phonologically delayed children who used sound-pattern errors typical of chronologically aged younger children (delayed group); 10 children whose phonological system was characterised by the consistent use of non-developmental phonological processes (deviant consistent group); and 10 children whose production of specific lexical items and phonological features was variable (inconsistent group). The groups were compared on tasks

Retrospective analysis of psychomotor agitation, hypomanic symptoms, and suicidal ideation in unipolar depression.

In bipolar depression, psychomotor agitation is relatively common and often is associated with other noneuphoric hypomanic symptoms and suicidal ideation. Our goal in this retrospective study was to ascertain the co-occurrence of agitation, bipolar features, and suicidal ideation in unipolar disorder. We retrospectively evaluated 314 inpatients with DSM-IV major depressive disorder (MDD) and no other Axis I diagnosis with the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) Life Chart Method and the Operational Criteria for Psychotic Illness (OPCRIT) checklist to ascertain their symptom profiles ac
